US Navy abandoned this remote Alaska base in 1997... What happened to Adak's houses?

Adak is a remote Alaska island in the north Pacific Ocean. It was the site of a US Navy base with more than 6000 military and their families by the 1980s. But everyone left when the base closed in March 1997, and most houses and buildings became abandoned. Now, Adak Island has only 33 permanent residents. Let's take a rainy look at one of Adak's long-decaying subdivisions.

I was born on Adak in 1978 to parents stationed there. Bio mother was first woman stationed in the Aleutians apparently to according to article I found. See, she gave me to adoption less than a month after birth. Flew to Anchorage and dropped her baby off. Dads orders apparently. First photo I ever saw of her was her Holding this small boy. That boy was my full blood brother both parents same. I felt incredibly betrayed at the age of maybe 10 first that they'd ditched me and then went and had another child out of guilt? Secondly at my adoptive parents who hadn't told me of the thick file they'd been keeping. I resented being forced to sneak around due to the need I felt to spare any bad feelings my adoption ever caused anyone. Be sure that adopted kids think about it more than you'll ever know. It's traumatic feeling so torn and ungrateful so as to be raised by a set of people who took you sight up nseen as their own but to ache with wonder and so many questions and to always be second and third guessing your own thoughts and others possible reactions and judgements like if I wonder x or y about mom will ok ther mom be mad at me or think "why can't he just be ok and see that we wanted him while they didn't?" It's complicated. Every time I see Adak I stop.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I hope you can find peace in the situation. Adoption is complicated and I know from first-hand experience. My parents were wonderful and 100% transparent about my origins. I won the parenting lottery when I was adopted. They were older and died too young but I'm beyond grateful for the time they existed in my life - at least in physical form. So many years later their parenting continues to guide me every day.

I lived on Adak from 1954-58 while my dad was a dockhand civilian for the Navy. Those were great years and I recall the movie theater, hamburger joint, and wintry walks in the hills. It is despicable at how much good money was wasted when this once fine base was abandoned.

@@chrisluckhardt Hello Chris. My dad moved the family to Seattle in '58 and I was stateside for good from then on. I remember seeing the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show (around 1964) and my parents and aunts/uncles were appalled but I was hooked. I got more seriously "in" to rock with the Doors, Cream, Joe Cocker, Blood Sweat and Tears, James Gang, Santana, the Who, Moody Blues, Hendrix and of course all the rockers out of Woodstock. I did know a few people my age who actually attended Woodstock and regretted it after for the sex and drugs. My late teen years (18-19) were marked by fear of getting drafted into the Vietnam War but I avoided that with a college deferment and felt guilty to this day when other young men served and I did not. I didn't really connect with pop culture with its heavy and casual drug emphasis but I suppose I did on a surface level with the music. I think now the movies and TV of the time were poorly produced. I see '60s reruns today and cringe at what in the world I ever thought was good about pop entertainment. However there will never be another golden age of music such as the earth experienced in the rock talent explosion of 1964-75.

I was there with NSGA/Company I Marine Support Battalion when some of the pre-fabbed houses were brought in. They were supposed to go to Hawaii. Some had glass-enclosed sun rooms attached...no way suited for Adak's environment. However it was gonna be too expensive to ship back out so they just put them up! 😮 Someone commented that they heard a story about some kids being lost while trying to escape Adak by way of a raft. Never heard that story while I was there. There's a reality tv show called Adak Gold. During my 3 tours there, NEVER heard about any pirate gold. There WAS an incident of a sailor getting lost during a "condition Alpha", which is a "white out" with it snowing so hard, can't see 3 feet in front of you. There were safety protocols for very inclement weather, such as if one was planning on hiking, ya had to report plans/route/ destination to the quarterdeck, so in the event ya didn't return by a certain time, they'd know where to search. It's hard to believe that 6000 people once lived on the island. And it was indeed, a fully functioning city! There were schools, hospital, restaurants, PX, commissary, Church, etc. Pets, including several horses, also lived there, so a Veterinary Clinic was on the base. There's a Pet Cemetery next to Adak National Forest. At Naval Security Group Activity on Bering Hill, some of the amenities included a movie theater, bowling alley, gym, & swimming pool. There was no lack of things to do. To make overseas phone calls, one could set up an account with the base phone exchange & then get a monthly bill. In later yrs, one could use a credit card. Radio & television came by way of AFRTS (Armed Forces Radio & Television)...limited tv programming, but at least it was something. Cable tv was available, however was SUPER expensive. There was even a Miss Adak Pageant, which was a preliminary contest for Miss Alaska, & then Miss America. This was during my first tour & with me being the only female Marine, I was of course; the Marine Corps contestant as there was a representative from each service branch. The base tv station filmed the event, so I'm sure a video exists somewhere. All around fun times & great memories! There's no place like Adak! And even though I had the opportunity to travel to many wonderful places...Adak was my FAVORITE duty station!!! ❤ Guantanamo Bay, Cuba was 2nd. I plan on going out there this Fall & am SO looking forward to it! With the current geo-political climate, & with Adak at one time being, "Our Western Most Link in the Chain of Defense" there may be a need to have an active base again. Chris, it must be very challenging to get drone footage with all the wind. Still you do a great job with it! Thanks so MUCH for sharing all these wonderful videos! ❤ ~Ooh Rah & Semper Fi 😊

So weird seeing it abandoned like that. I was watching and kept expecting to see cars driving down the road. Reminds me of something I heard during one of my visits in the 90's. Apparently there were 3 kids who were upset about being on the island. They decided they would make a raft and go to Anchorage. If I remember right they found one of the bodies but not the other two ? I'm not sure now. I don't know what year that happened, there were kids on the island at least in the 70's because I know a woman who lived there as a kid as she's older than me. Anyway - maybe it's just my mood at the moment (ha!) but the place looks haunted. I guess yeah - going back to WWII a lot of people died there.

My wife and I lived in Bayshore housing, it was nicely furnished and pretty comfortable. Cable TV was pricey, about $80/ month but you could survive with base supplied AFRTS ( Armed Forces Radio/Television Service).
