Alaska's COLD WAR listening station ABANDONED by the US Navy | NSGA Adak

Naval Security Group Activity (NSGA) was an organization within the US Navy on Adak Island. It was tasked with intelligence gathering, cryptology, and denial of intelligence to Cold War and other adversaries. More than 700 military personnel were assigned to operations in these isolated facilities. Military activities lasted on this location from September 1943 until March 1997 when the entire Adak base was closed. But thawing arctic ice and geopolitical concerns has the US Navy considering a base reopening.

Yes I was stationed there. I lived on the first floor facing the lagoon. I started out working in the galley then in security. I didn’t see you go in there on your video. I remember standing outside in the freezing cold waiting for colors to put the flag up or down and they would forget to play it! Lol. Was there during the 7.7 earthquake. On nice sunny days the CO would give us sunshine liberty so that we could get off work and enjoy the outside. So many good memories!

Very nice video! I was stationed @ Adak 3 times. I lived and worked at Bering Hill w NSGA/Company I Marine Support Battalion. My 1st tour barracks was the 2nd story bldg...the 1st one attached to what looks like a tunnel. My room was on 2nd floor...3rd in from left. I had a fantastic view of Clam Lagoon & Zeto Point. The dining hall & quarter deck were in the lower blding. The main NSG admin building was across the courtyard. The building that sits by itself @ around 37:19 was where I worked & was called Shotgun. It had a Wullenweber antennae (known as the dinosaur cage) surrounding it. I also worked at Zeto Point that had White Alice. Zeto Point was located a few kliqs from the main compound, to the right of the barracks. The road going out to it is next to the lagoon. It's quite disturbing and sad to see how much on the base had been allowed to deteriorate after it was turned over to the Aleut Corp.😢 Another video of yours shows some of the dependent & family housing. I was on island when some of those pre-fabbed houses were brought in. They were supposed to go to Hawaii. But it was gonna be too much trouble to ship back out, so they just erected them in this very unsuitable environment. The harsh weather has definitely taken a toll. That along with the vandalism of course... humans, which is often why we can't hv anything nice! There's a video by another poster that shows some of the activities of daily life. Check out "Adak Days Numbered", posted by teerav73. Hard to believe that 6000 people once lived there & it was one of the largest towns in AK. Adak is cold, rainy, & cloudy with lotts'a snow in winter. Also VERY windy. It is called The Birthplace of the Winds. Sunny days are infrequent & sometimes when there was one, the CO would call a "Sunshine Day", and ya could get a day off to go out & enjoy it. That's if you had a job that would allow for several people to be off work. There is no place like Adak...in my humble opinion. The landscape & scenery are awesome as is the wildlife! Eagles, ptarmigan (a type of bird), otters, and caribou...w the caribou being at a different place on the island. Tundra stomping was a favored activity. I plan on going out there this Fall & am so looking forward to the trip! This time I'll be flying on Alaskan Airlines instead of RAA...Reeves Aleutian Airways. Chris, is the fish processing plant still in operation? Thanks so MUCH for sharing these wonderful videos!! ❤

I've watched Chris's (& some by other posters) Adak videos & am just amazed at the deterioration of the buildings & other things. I'm gobsmacked at the amount of stuff that was left behind. Such a waste! I realize that anything that was gonna leave the island had to go by way of plane or ship/barge..which is very expensive, but GOOD GRIEF! No wonder the govt often runs outta money! I also wonder why the Aleut Corp didn't do MORE with all that was turned over to them after the base closure. There was at one time a discussion abt putting a prison out there, but that idea was scuttled, because it was suggested that a prison in such a place might be considered cruel & unusual punishment. Really? 😮 Yet, thousands of military personnel (myself included), dependents, govt contractors, other civilians & pets/animals lived and worked on Adak and did just fine. SMDH Still, I enjoy reading everyone's comments about their Adak experiences. Brings back such good memories. And if I hadn't been there myself, wouldn't believe such a UNIQUE place exists. Just heard on the news that last night, 03/10/23 a volcano erupted in eastern Russia near the Kamchatka(sp) Peninsula, that spewed ash over quite a distance. Adak & Shemya are very near the Peninsula...I wonder if any ash could be seen over the islands?

When we shut down NSGA and boarded it up, we left most of the infrastructure in place. Vandalism is sad to see from anything coming off the island. Once environmental services are shut down, the mold and deterioration of buildings takes over pretty quickly. We entered one of the barracks as part of the departure inventory after 6 months and there was 6" of green stuff growing in the carpets.

My room was newer and as nice as a good hotel, with two beds, a full bathroom, and the comforts of home. It was my most peaceful year of duty with the Naval Security Group Activity, now known as Cyber Warfare (it was much more than radio signal monitoring...Lol)...it saddens me to see it looking like this. Behind the drywall where people signed their names is a wall drawn in the 1940's depicting an Aleuts Village. It's very cool. We were not allowed to display it when we discovered it because it was not politically correct. Behind the glass walls across from the bowling alley was a snack bar. The people in MWR worked hard at NSGA. THANK YOU. Thanks for posting this video. MWR had P-Club, snack bar, bowling, ceramics shop, hobby shop, auto shop, the gym for sports and movies. Much of the damage is due to Adak’s intense winds. But vandalism is frequent. Even the coast guard caught its service members destroying property in 2018. Here’s a quote from Lt. Brian Dykens in the Anchorage Daily News: “There's just a lot of people running around town, including hunters, fishermen, fish processing workers, history buffs, television crews and tourists drawn by TV shows featuring caribou hunting and antiques," he said. "People think they can do whatever they want, and it makes it incredibly difficult, especially for a city government with just six employees… People that come to the island just don't care.”

I found a 1980 study called "Maritime Patrol Airship Study" that mentions Tom Milton (pg5) and Adak. I'm assuming it's the same guy. Here's the link: apps.dtic.mil/sti/pdfs/ADA089483.pdf

I am pretty sure JUST recently a netflix show where they were finding some pirates gold from on Adak Island just released. They found like only 2 coins since "supposedly" the rest are in this sealed off government area. Thought it was something I would say because Adak is a interesting place.

My Dad was up there working on the RADAR system or systems IDK . It was in the 50s. He told me of a guy who had just arrived and put his bottle of booze outside and when they came off shift he pulled a swig off of it.. It killed him right there when that cold as outside temperature hit his heart area as it went down his throat.. Yeah pretty hard core. Yes he was told but chose to believe something else.

The Navy would need to demolish everything and rebuild from scratch. The abandoned McDonald's, a few houses, and a few administration buildings are all that remain usable.

Locals didn't damage the buildings. Besides harsh weather, human damage was due to visiting sailors, hunters, and even the coast guard. Source for the coast guard: www.adn.com/alaska-news/rural-alaska/2018/04/04/coast-guard-members-disciplined-for-vandalism-at-adaks-abandoned-military-base/

I was surprised to see such thin windows for a place like NSGA. My research indicates the vandalism mostly happened between 2000-2004 when contracted crews were brought in for toxic clean up. Someone who was there at the time mentioned young workers were known to damage empty buildings and structures.

The US Navy completed a land transfer to The Aleut Corporation (TAC) in 2004. TAC has approximately 3000 shareholders of Aleutian native descent. But part of the island remains within US government and US Navy control. The Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge is managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. And the US Navy retains part of the north end of Adak Island to monitor and clear unexploded ordnance. And my host mentioned there are 33 permanent residents on Adak. He was Adak's fire chief during the 1970s, moved to San Diego, then moved back to Adak to retire and run an Airbnb. He bought a few houses for under $10000, and one that was more expensive.
