I like what you've done and will make the same modification with each canteen cup I have. One thing I will do differently will be to put a small bend in the bail at the center of the bail so that when the cup is hanging by the bail it will not slip to one side or the other spilling whatever is in the cup.

Yes, that would be a good addition as long as it doesn't stick out too much and hinder it's nesting abilities.

The Vietnam War surplus canteen, canteen cup and mess kit are the best!! The butterfly handles sometimes need some tweaking to keep them from coming loose, but a little elbow grease and persistence pays off!! I've got two mess kits; a '65 Carrollton and a '66 Regal.

Very ingenious design! The foldaway bail, still can use GI handles, cup, stove and cover still functional like it was designed together. The only concern I have is that coat-hanger wire varies in thickness and strength. I would opt if possible for heavy gauge coat hanger for the Bail. However stronger wire coat hangers are hard to come by... I don't know how much the wire will deflect under water weight. I am also a tinkerer and build things. Thank you again. You saved me from watching cats playing pianos once again😊

Great idea if you already have this canteen, but if you don’t have one yet, take my advice and get a German/Austrian/Swedish mess kit. You get the kidney shaped pot and top, but no canteen. The pot's bail locks so you can pour or hold it, and the top can be a fry pan, or small pot, amd is made to attach to a stick to hold over the fire. Wayyy better designed piece of kit, and no mods needed. The aluminum one is really cheap. Like $25-20.

Well done as usual. I'd probably fill the cup with liquid to find the balance points though, more important it hangs straight when full than empty.

Excellent video. I had been considering building a sling-type pot hanger from small-diameter stainless steel cable per the instructions on the Far North Bushcraft. Lonie posted an excellent tutorial on the subject. The idea works great provided there is a lip at the top of your pot for the cable sling to grab. The canteen cup "bellies in" at the front so the sling becomes problematic. I believe James has created a simple solution with easy-to-obtain parts

Thanks, James! A clever Idea but lookingin my parts bun U found an easier and more versatile option. Just put alligator clips on the ends of the wire! -Need more strength? Put TWO clips on each end. - Quick on. Quick off. and can be used on other items. Just found a recovered pair of trilling motor battery clips. They maybe overkill for a canteen cup but they easily held up a half full stock pot (64 oz/4 lb/1.8 kg) Hope that helps...

Excellent. I have seen people do something like that with metal paper clips or binder clips also.

I never get tired of seeing what your mind comes up with! You and I are very much alike when it comes to figuring out how to diy something for a certain use! Keep up the great work James!!! By the way, when I make your folding spoon from last video, I am going to take my Dremel and see about making the spoon into a spork. It hit me that since you are using a tablespoon, making it into a spork would still leave a good sized bowl left to be more useful than a standard spork. Will let you know how it goes! 😁

Hey I made it to number one spot. That's pretty clever James, maybe a little more complicated than some of your other builds but nonetheless clever but I'm sure I can get it done. I have the military canteen and I used to have the cup but I have no idea where that thing is, it is not in my camping and backpacking equipment. It's possible I let someone use it or it's possible that, no it's not possible that I lost it, so if I still have it it's in this house somewhere. I'm going to check my military belt rig and see if it's in there otherwise if it's not they don't cost that much so I may just purchase another. Anyway James this was a great little build and an very clever way to hang the cup. Stay vigilant my friend and may God bless.

I noticed if you hang the pot, it could slide to either side. You should put a notch in the middle of the handle to keep it centered when hanging it.

Yes, you could do that as long as it didn't stick out too far and hinder it's nesting abilities.
