US diplomat who resigned from State Department, Hala Rharrit, on war in Gaza • FRANCE 24 English

After 18 years working as a diplomat, Hala Rharrit never expected she would resign. But a few weeks ago, she left her job in opposition to the US’s policy on the war in Gaza. “It was a very agonising decision,” she told FRANCE 24 in an interview. Hala Rharrit was also the Dubai Regional Media Hub's deputy director and joined the State Department almost two decades ago as a political and human rights officer. "I needed to get out of the system in order to be able to speak freely,” she said.

That's if the US will get thru WW3 and go completely bankrupt. Right now US is trying to arm 3 different countries against US enemies and totally forget about the people here in the US. Housing cost higher than ever. I'm in Denver, Co. Who can afford a $750k home? It's bursting at the seems. All the free medical goes to the immigrants. I'm Mexican. But the US took away half the country. Texas, NM, AZ, CA...SMH !!! You're right that all this is causing a lot of hatred. Peace be with you my friend 😊

There are many things to consider when looking at high level foreign policy. The ability to influence the other party is one of them. Netanyahu’s right wing has been very insistent on a continued large scale assault on Gaza.. they were also insistent on a large retaliation on Iran, which the U.S. was able to stop, but by conceding to the Israelis that they’d support an operation in Rafah. It is unlikely that the U.S. could force the Israelis to a ceasefire agreement. It’s politically impossible for Netanyahu, and would only harm relations and reduce the influence that the U.S. has in the Netanyahu administration. Let’s not forget that the U.S. has long supported calls for a Palestinian state, and now there may be an opportunity for a two state solution. The U.S. wants the Saudi’s and Lebanese to recognize Israel and Israel could be enticed to agree to a two state solution in exchange for recognition. Netanyahu is also likely to be out of office by the end of the year. The U.S. is expecting the next Israeli administration to be more centrist, and so there is hope that an two state solution can be reach rather soon A shift in U.S. policy away from Israel would be popular among the Arab population, but it would only hamper Washington’s influence Israel and decrease the chances of a Palestinian state.

If she hasn’t got the stomack to stand up for the western way of war, where cities are taken through siege and demolition (or: “liberation by destruction”, as Michel Yakovleff termed it), then perhaps her leaving the service was the proper choice. I am a bit uneasy with her eagerness to champion the antagonists of the west though … perhaps she got a bit too intimate with them during her years in exile?
