US completes first dogfight between AI-controlled F-16 and human pilot

History has been made by a US military outfit that conducted the first in-air dogfight between a human pilot and an AI-controlled fighter jet.
The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa) has released footage of AI (artificial intelligence) algorithms autonomously flying a specially modified F-16 against a human-piloted F-16 and performing weaving manoeuvres as they go through the sky.
Darpa said this represented a "transformational moment in aerospace history".

Make sure your printer cable is plugged into both the printer and a USB port connected to your computer. Make sure your printer is plugged into a working power outlet. Turn everything off (computer and printer) and then turn the printer on... wait a minute for it to start and then restart your computer. If you receive a prompt that says a new printer has been identified, just wait for it to be configured and added automatically. Also check to make sure there is paper, ink, toner, ect in the printer. That will fix 99% of printer problems. If it doesn't work for you, try downloading and installing the printer's driver (control software) from the manufacturer's website. Then, restart your computer with the printer already on. Good luck. You got this.

Are you just one of those Brits easily triggered by the mere truth about your incompetence or do you actually have something useful to say that you have completely though out before you chose to open your mouth? By the time the Tempest is readily made available, which is generously stated to be in the in late 30s, early 40s, that will be behind already established 5th generation technology. Meanwhile, the US Airforce and US Navy are slated to have their own 6th generation aircraft by them, along with accompanying automotive flying accompanying vehicles with them. You being triggered by your stagnance and incompetence is your problem, not mine. Perhaps, you should work on being innovative and productive instead of being so stagnant?

@kamraam1464 currently. If AI is found to work decently (or even adequately) against humans, airframes will be immediately designed to withstand double or triple the forces a human can handle and then that huge advantage will be deployed, and the "adequate" will become "overwhelmingly superior". Of course, dogfighting is more or less over. Everything depends upon detection radius, stealth and missile technology now, but tripling the G load would result in turns that may be able to avoid missile hits, which would help in that respect as well.

That actually depends on how robust and maintainable the design for the AI is. Imagine if you will a poor technician who was trained 3 cycles of training down from a properly trained individual. A wire got unstuck from its port, and wont reclasp. So they ducttape and superglue it in. 2 flights later the ai drone pulls too hard a g force at a slight diagonal and the wire rips out, inverting its gyroscope feedback and causing it to spaz out, stall, and crash. Like with drones, this kind of thing will have its organic place within the current structures.

The US Marines don't get a lot of visibility for their forward thinking, and they shocked everyone when they decided to dumb main battle tanks (being a former Marine myself, I thought it was the right call but most were dumbfounded). The Marines are testing the XQ-58A Valkyrie because they seem to believe that the drone is the future (they started buying small infantry level drones in 2012, so once again, the Marines were looking at the future of warfare, and Ukraine has validated their decision). This is the magic of the XQ-58. For the price of one F-35, the Marines could buy 50 XQ-58s. Drone swarms are the future and the Marines know that. The Air Force will buy a few hundred horribly expensive planes that may face thousands of autonomous drones. One of the roles of the XQ-58 will be to "take one for the team," meaning to put itself out there in front of the manned plane to draw the fire so the enemy aircraft has to reveal its position. The F-35 can easily be tricked this way too so an enemy could use similar inexpensive drones to simply swamp high tech aircraft. The future often written about in science fiction books is very close at hand.

Nice story, but it is very hard to predict where these developments will lead us. I would not in the least be surprised if in two years they come up with a laserpod for jet fighters and tanks that can destroy 10 drones per second. Such tech is already in development.

Moreover instead of giving the marines so much credit. The overall infrastructure of the military force needs to be somewhat balanced. WHat if the drones face somekind of critical bug? Then suddenly the whole military would be in shambles. THat´s why you ideally have both, F35s AND drones.

@@mikeserds2333 If you can't get your F-35 close enough to Taiwan to use it, then what good is it? If China tries re-unify Taiwan, the US will very likely not directly engage the Chinese Navy on the open seas or attack the Chinese Mainland, because either of those would be an act of war. What it will do though is put perhaps 5 battalions of Marines on to the island ahead of the attack (because of course we will know it is coming) to act solely in defense. The Marines will likely have to be more or less self sufficient. They have been stocking up on shore based anti-ship missiles and drones. Frankly, we should not be giving Taiwan 2 billion dollars. Taiwan spends only 2% of its GDP on defense. I hate to see US Marine lives put at risk in a country that does not spend more than 2% when it knows it is a likely to be attacked.

Eventually manned aircraft are likely to become obsolete or limited to non combat operations. But high tech expensive fighters, autonomous or not, are not getting replaced by drone swarms. You can't perform precision strikes with cheap drones. Or electronic warfare. Or intercept high speed high altitude targets. Or act as local command and control. You'll still need more capable, expensive drones to do those jobs.
