I really love this version, it’s so beautiful that we have Triton saying to Ariel ‘it’s alright sweetheart [...]’; that simple line really shows the power of a parent’s unconditional love to show forgiveness to a child. I feel this scene is even more powerful because we see not just a parent’s forgiveness but most importantly a father’s forgiveness. Also having Ariel gain her voice back in this way has so much gravitas.

I think this ending is superior to the chosen one. The majority of criticism aimed at TLM is based on the belief that Ariel lacks a character arc - she makes an awful mistake, but other people fix it for her and she gets a happy ending without needing to apologise. By having her contribute directly to Ursula's defeat, and giving her a proper apology scene, this draft rectifies these problems. Furthermore, the fact Ariel does not get her voice back until after Ursula's defeat means that Eric is fighting for her because he loves her for who she is, and not merely because she is the girl with the beautiful voice who saved his life. That completes his character growth as well, and allows him to be more interesting. Whilst the chosen ending is spectacular, this one provides greater depth and is therefore superior.

+Rtotalmagic Actually Eric does pick Ariel before she gets her voice. If you look at him in the scene where Ariel peeks out the curtains, when he throws away the flute (or the song rather) he turns like he has given up on the mystery girl and is about to go to Ariel, when he is cursed with the spell, which is broken after Ariel regains her voice

I like this ending because it fleshes out Sebastain's character more. Remember, he was more skeptical of Eric and the idea of Ariel being human. Having him be the one that helps Eric defeat Ursula shows how much he's changed.

After seeing this alternate ending deleted scene, they should added what King Triton said. Added Triton's lines that says. "That human saved my life, Ariel's life and your life Sebastian. He saved all of our lives." Sebastian agrees with him. "Yes. Yes he sure did your Majesty." Then Triton and Sebastian see Ariel looking sad. Triton then says to Sebastian. "She really does love him. Doesn't she Sebastian?" Sebastian replies. "Well it's like I always say your Majesty. Children have got to be free to lead their own life." Surprised Triton says. "You always say that?" Nervous Sebastian uses body language to say. "Yes. Please don't feel offended." Triton sighs. "Then I suppose there's only one thing left to accept." Sebastian asks. "And what is that?" Triton answers. "How much I'm going to miss her." I mention how I feel because I think it would have been nice to see Triton finally acknowledging that not all humans are bad.

@jf k I never felt that Ariel truly apologized to her family for the hurt she caused. She said sorry when everything was terrible but a true apology after everything would go a long way. And then her father could see that being with Eric would truly make her happy. Triton is the only character that changes and grows and the largest character arc is triton letting go of his daughter. Them having a moment together is very precious.

Howard Ashman was a great voice actor as he was a lyricist. He truly created a masterpiece. God rest his soul.
There are a lot of little details I wish were kept for the final version of the film: * Triton having his own character arc created by acknowledging that a human, Eric, saved him and his daughter. We saw moments throughout the film where he second-guessed his actions and choices, and those are vindicated by this moment. * Sebastian directly contributing to the victory by retrieving the trident and handing it to Eric. It gives him a full arc from his initial refusal to help Ariel early in the film. * Ariel trying to fight Ursula after pulling her hair to make her miss Eric and hit her pet eels. * The dramatic irony that Eric slays Ursula with the very trident she had coveted for its power over the sea. * Ariel having a moment to apologize to her father for throwing away her common sense and trusting Ursula. * Jodi Benson singing the Reprise of Part of Your World, bringing Ariel's arc through the song to full completion.

Oddly, this seems much more epic than the final version. Ariel manages to beat the crap out of Ursula, she gets thrown onto a rock, Eric runs for his life as Ursula tries to catch him, he stomps one of her tentacles with a rock and finally blasts her with the trident just like a sniper's headshot. Then the producers read The Call of Chtulhu and we got the seafood shibkebab sequence...which still turns Eric into a badass, since he brings down a 150 foot Kraken with nothing but the bowsprit of a sunken ship.

You can really feel how much pain Eric is in, holding his lungs for a LONG time underwater, *all in the name of love and risking his life for Ariel.* Yeah, his girlfriend is a fish. 😂 BUT the fact that Eric still went after Ariel and risked drowning and strangulation by Ursula’s tentacles for her is TRUE LOVE if I ever saw it. I don’t buy the feminist complaint that “The Little Mermaid” teaches girls to change themselves so the boys could like you. Ariel wanted to be human PRIOR to meeting Eric. Even when her true mermaid identity was revealed to Eric, it didn’t change how he felt about her. When Ariel was kidnapped by Ursula and forced back into the ocean, Eric still went after Ariel and risked his life to save her under the sea.

5:23 REWIND MULTIPLE TIMES, THAT VOICE!!🧜♀️🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶💓😯
Here's my take on the ending: Ultimately I think the ending in the finished film works perfectly fine. It's very cinematic and it establishes just how powerful Ursula is with the Trident. And I love the dialogue between Sebastian and Triton right before he turns Ariel human. Also, I adore the choral reprise of "Part of Your World" at the end, it really harkens back to the Disney movies of yore. It also makes a lot more sense to have Ariel regain her voice before the battle. It gives Eric a stronger motivation to try and save her. What I do really like in this version though is how violent it is. It really feels like an intense two sided struggle, whereas the final version basically resolves via Deus Ex Sunken Ships. It almost plays out like the climax of a horror film. It's debatable whether or not Ariel is actually more active in this original climax, since here she doesn't redirect Ursula's aim at the eels and she's knocked unconscious halfway through the battle, but I like how she engages directly with Ursula more than in the final ending. I also love Ariel's emotional apology and Triton's acceptance. If that was given more room to breathe it could have been so powerful. And even though I don't think it works as well, good LORD Jodi Benson sounds so damn gorgeous singing that reprise. The perfect ending is somewhere between the two. Both have their pros and cons. I hope for the live action version they can have a good synthesis of the two and maybe have Ariel play a legitimate active role.

Oh my gosh I wish they kept the bit with Ursula wrapping her tentacles around Eric and trying to drown him. That’s so evil and epic. And also where Ariel apologies to her father and he says it’s all right. They NEEDED that moment. Also ‘that human saved my life’, when Triton realises not all humans are bad. And when Ariel sings too 🥺😭 So good.

She actually fought more in the actual ending. She was unconscious in this one.
The, "That human saved my life" line is one I wish they'd kept. I'd only change one part of it. Instead of Triton saying "my life", he should have said, "our lives". It would show that he realized that, not only are humans not all bad, but that this one in particular can protect Ariel, the way Triton always wanted to protect her himself. He can trust this one human to protect his precious daughter. It would complete his story arc of being a human-hating, over-protective father in every way.

In this version, he doesn't want vengeance on his crab nemesis.
The fight here feels more intense than what we got with the final product. The final does have Ursula's absolute power and size mixed with Ariel's helplessness and Eric's desperation, but because of the size and power difference, it doesn't feel as much of a struggle as waiting for the right opportunity and timing. With the deleted scene, not only do we see Ariel fight back (more than just a hair-pull) and see her get legitimately injured, but Ursula chasing Eric with her tentacles is legit intense as she becomes a feral monster as opposed to an all-powerful sea-goddess. And let's face it, being strangled and drowned is a much more gruesome fate than being magic blasted. Along with Sebastion helping out more and Ursula getting killed by the power she wanted (the trident), I feel like this was a much more fulfilling final fight. In essence, this and the official ending is like comparing a big monster boss fight to a 1v1 boss fight; the big monster fight has the scale and the spectacle but the 1v1 has the intensity and personal rivalry come to a head.
No one is commenting on it so I will: Alan Menken's piano score gave me GOOSEBUMPS
Eric with longer hair at the end o.o As much as I love the movie, I wish they'd stuck with this ending! Ariel fighting made her seem like a stronger character here.

Yeah, I like that because it shows that time has passed and they didn't get married like that day. My hair only grows like an inch a month and my hair apparently grows fast. That's at least half a year later, looking at how much new hair he has. They went on dates AFTER she could talk. And stayed together.
I do like how this ending adds more depth to the characters. There is one difference I don’t like. The fact that Ariel doesn’t get her voice back until after Ursula’s death. I just love the sequence with the animals torturing Vanessa/ Ursula on the wedding yacht. Especially the contributions of Scuttle and Max who successfully break the enchanted 🐚 necklace.
I honestly love this ending a bit more than the official.

I too love this ending more.
I definitely prefer this one. The fight is so much more intricate and requires so many players. The added suspense by adding Ariel into the mix of Triton and Eric is great, too. What really gets me is that Ariel actually tells her father she is sorry in a far better manner (in the chosen take it comes off more like she is afraid of getting in trouble for all the mess she made rather than sincere remorse - when you pair it to how many kids saw the destruction of her grotto scene...) and that she never meant to hurt him - shame it wasn't more tearful, though... From the original tale by Christian Anderson and Disney's take on the story, I have always found the character of the little mermaid to be incredibly selfish because there is almost never any mention of her thinking about her family. Sure, there is that one moment in this movie where she does pause and think of how she'll never be with her father or sisters again, but it was immediately clouded over when Ursula notes "but you'll have your man". Both versions, however, she spends her time completely immersed in the prince without sparing a thought of what her family is going through. She leaves them without a trace and all the time she is gone they are worrying like mad over her and has the whole kingdom searching for her whereabouts - and the worst, deepest fear that she might be missing because she is dead is likely in the back of all their minds.

Not really,in the book she talks to her sisters every night when she goes to wash her bloody feet in the steps of the palace by the sea .Her grandmother went balled from grief and is present with the father though from a distance. She has a much stronger relationship with her family in the original tale and does kiss them goodbye before she goes to the steps of the prince's palace To drink the potion

@@alexp.d3689 Ah, thank you for the reply. It spurred me into reading the tale again. Most of my life must have been spent reading an abridged version, because what I am reading now certainly has details that I do not find particularly familiar. Nevertheless, my views remain. She may spare a thought for them, but she is so dead set on living as a human and gaining an immortal soul she never stops to consider all the pain and grief she will cause her family - who obviously loves her dearly. In some ways it is worse in the original tale, because she actually sees what her family is going through over losing her. (I haven't read anything about her washing blood from her feet and her actually talking to her sisters, though.) Anyway, as it goes... she left the night of a great festivity, went straight to the sea witch, made the deal and abandoned the family that adores her as well as her own kind. She leaves them completely in the dark when she disappears and it is only by fortune her sisters actually know of the prince's palace and eventually think to search for her there. (I never read anything about her washing blood from her feet or of her "talking" with them.) After that she sees what her decisions have led to. They had been worriedly searching for her all that time, are sick with grief and mourn over her, but she shows no remorse. She just smiles at them in hopes that they know she is happy. Really... I just feel sorry for her family more than I do for her.
I wouldn't be surprised if some of these drawings were Glen Keane's. Theres a couple of frames on Ursula, especially her expressions, that SCREAM Ratigan to me.

I love love this ending so much because Tritan acknowledges Eric saved him and Ariels apology is much better.
It’s kind of ironic to see Ursula be done in the trident’s power, which was the one thing she was after. And in a way, it kind of does happen in the final film. When she’s impaled by the ship’s bow, the trident’s power results in her getting struck by lightning and sinking.

I like this ending because Ariel is a lot more active in the climax and she has that moment to talk with her father afterwards, but I liked that the ending that they DID go with put emphasis on Triton coming to respect Ariel's choices and also accepting Eric. This one it puts more emphasis on Triton coming to accept Eric which is fine but There's no "She really does love him" moment. Also I loved how epic the official climax got with Ursula strutting her stuff now that she has everything she ever wanted, growing huge, making tidal waves, raising ships and blasting anywhere she wants. I think between this ending and the official one is something really spectacular. Find some way to mix them together

There is more heart and emotion in this ending. I like it better but I can see why they went with the more "epic" ending in the final film. I do agree with most that this ending contained better character development for each character But I feel obviously the dialogue was better in the original one and the fight scene was more simplistic but I think overall the substance of this one helps the characters development better than the original . Overall beautiful both of them

I think people have to remember that Ariels mom, Tritons queen, was killed by humans. This is why he is so protective of his daughters and want them to stay away from the humans. But in this scene for the first time Triton sees that humans can do good, and that all humans aren’t bad in the same way that all sea folk aren’t good (ursula). Eric sees Ariels true form abd isn’t appalled but instead still loves her enough to risk his life for her and defeat Ursula. It’s such a powerful scene, really wish they kept all of it
People only seem to like this ending because Ariel apologizes. In case you guys forgot, Ariel apologized in the real ending too, I know it didn't last long but I think it's enough proof she learned something.

*”In case you guys forgot, Ariel apologized in the real ending too, I know it didn’t last long but I think it’s enough proof she learned something.”* Just saying you’re sorry is not enough. You have to actually MEAN it. Ariel only apologized because she got CAUGHT, not because she actually did something wrong and feels bad about it! Ursula shows the contract that Ariel signed to King Triton, and then it cuts to Ariel *frantically* saying “Daddy, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to. I didn’t know...”. Figuratively speaking, Ariel got caught with her pants down! 😂 *”It’s not what it looks like, Daddy!”* 😂 😂

Nobody, and I mean nobody is a better Ursula than Pat Carroll. RIP.
I absolutely love this version (almost a bit better then the original released one) but the thing I did like was that in the og Eric stabs Ursula in the gut with a huge boat instead of just the Trident and both are really climatic but the Boat just “hits” differently if you get my drift, but yes I love how everything else seemed more intense when it was the battle like when Ursula was pulling Ariel’s hair & drowning Eric (along with its music choices too) it was so crazy! I also love how sweet the ending was as it sort of made up for its intensity from the beginning, the whole part with Sebastian changing from a grumpy crustacean to a sweet helper as he gave Eric the trident was so humble, the parts with Ariel actually apologizing as well as King Trident realizing that not all humans are bad was even sweeter but to top it all off just that ending with the marriage, singing & even too how Sebastian doesn’t get hit but the knife as the chef was cutting the cake was ahh just so adorable and in general funny and ofc sweet all together! Just loved it! 👏🥹
The price looks much more handsome here. Also this ending rocks.
interesting how a couple of ursula's voice clips were used for the final cut in a different part of the movie; the laugh at 0:33 seems to have been pasted onto the end of poor unfortunate souls when ariel gets turned into a human underwater, while the scream at 3:38 and the oh's after it were pitched down with reverb for when she gets stabbed with a bowsprit instead. it's cool to see how they took some things and edited or rearranged them for the final cut.
As no one talked about that I like Louis(the chef) part at the end there. As a kid I always feel bad for him at the original ending.
I liked Ariel's dress when she is running to Eric on land
Really troubling how Ursula is performing her evil laughter from 03:29 to 03:36 while trying to strangle Prince Eric while he is underwater. Then again, the following part has Prince Eric defeating Ursula by hurling the trident at her like a harpoon.
I would've loved to see that fight scene between Ariel and Ursula, it could've been a better moment in the movie..... and it would've made the scene if Ariel was seen singing "Now we can walk, now we can run,'' As Eric was looking at her in shock then happiness
This scene had so much more emotion in it than the one we got. You can see how much more in Love Eric and Ariel are. You can see that Ariel regrets her actions and acknowledged she was wrong. As well as how strong and brave she is for trying to take on Ursula.
I like that he impaled her with the trident.
@anima07swe

It certainly does seem fitting, since she wanted it (the trident) so much.
I really wish they did this version. My life after watching this deleted scene will never be the same again. In a way I can understand because this happens to be more intense and Ursula trying to drown Eric, he stabs her with the trident. The boat scene was pretty epic but I think this one is better. A lot of people are saying that they're happy that Ariel is apologizing and taking responsibility, but King Triton doesn't apologize and doesn't take responsibility on his end. I've noticed while watching a lot of The Little Mermaid movies and series that Triton doesn't tell Ariel that he loves her to face or with newest one he apologized once. He express so much with actions that doesn't fit in his words the way he would want them. He is typical male that is shy with words than with showing his affections or emotional feeling. He showed remorse for his face when he destroyed her grotto with absolutely regret, he's desperate days of hoping that Ariel will come back home safe, but here is where his apologize comes in. Even though he has six other daughters and his kingdom. A man who isn't sorry from the depth of his heart wouldn't have given up his everything including his own soul to Ursula just to save her for damned fate. That to me was his apologize. And Ariel so young, desperate, and naive thought the only way she's really hurting her father and hers sisters that worse is that they will never see her again. She didn't see the consequence of her loved ones and the world being in physical danger. She meant the consequences to be hers alone. Her apologies so sincerely and her father so happy to reunited with her nothing else matters and they both reconciled in the most beautiful way. I wish that show this dymanic of Triton and Ariel with such depth in a simple scene.
I love the smooth detail that all of Ursula and her eel's faces resemble a lot of Ratigan's facial expressions. Makes sense considering Ron Clements and John Musker made The Great Mouse Detective prior to Little Mermaid.

Trident, the word is “Trident”.
I literally teared up when Sebastian helped Eric with the trident. Sebastian was so against Ariel having anything to do with the human world, so for him to help Eric in his moment of weakness shows such a profound level of strength that would have added a heartfelt emotional effect to his character. I love the way the movie is, but this ending would have been superior.
How I like not only Ariel apologized to her dad after ursula is defeated like she did said "I'm sorry." to him in the final film. Ariel and Triton hug each other as reconcile their family relationship for one another making amends and as Triton said to her "it's alright." That he still loves her and knows why she has to deal with ursula just to live her life freely in her new home on land with Eric because she couldn't live with herself being in a cage in his hands as a prisoner of his will before he saw Ariel on a rock at the shore looking at Eric finally sees this that he can trust good human people like Eric since he saved ariel's life and his life even shows Eric and Ariel really love each other beyond their backgrounds So that goes to the happy ending of the story.
