LYRICS:
You're looking at me like I must be mad
But I've been through all this before
You'll kick and kick until I'm down
So don't think you're coming past my door oh no!
You think that love is such a pain
So the more it hurts the more you laugh
You take it and shake it up and down
'Til you think you've had enough
But you won't get enough of my love
If you want to carry on in the same old way
Treating everyone like a piece of dirt
Take it and break it and throw it away
There won't be anyone left to hurt oh no!
North, South, East and West
Wherever you go you'll find the same
And the only way you'll ever learn
Is to realize that you're to blame

The intro with Ken leaning on that Hammond followed by a vocal choral with a pounding back beat. Then it takes off led by the drums followed by David barking a legend Heep vocal. Uriah Heep = Vocal’s with musical genius..

While the whole album Look At Yourself is a masterpiece, the song Shadows Of Grief is the masterpiece of the masterpiece! When I bought this album as a kid in the early seventies, this song was the best hardrock-song I've ever heard - and I've heard a lot 'til this moment (Heep, Sabbath, Purple, Zeppelin and many others)

My favorite Heep song. I like it much more than July Morning. It’s too bad I could never see them with David Byron. These albums came out many many years before I was born.

Mine as well. He'd also listen to Joe Jacksons album: "Look sharp" All those are my favorit nostalgic records, to listen to when I really miss my Old Man. I understand him so much better today. He couldn't just give in to my Moms principles, because they where wrong and he wanted to instill real values inside me. My Dad is my Hero!!!

Every time I think about this song, I’m always reminded of the time King Diamond and myself bonded over the fact that we both picked “Shadows of Grief” as our favorite Uriah Heep song. And that has to be pretty surprising, because it’s not one of the main hits, but rather a semi-deep track on Look at Yourself. A lot of weirdness happens across its 8:41 width and girth, but the song’s descending verse riff is just so enormous, all is forgiven. When we get out of the atmospheric bit - forget religious cult; that’s a Satanic cult - and David sings, “North, south, east and west,” that’s just one of the top magical moments in heavy metal history right there. Again, Heep does many things great, but besides the brilliance of this song’s central premise, I’d say there are three things “Shadows of Grief” does better than Heep anywhere else or anybody anywhere else: 1) production, 2) the guitar-organ alloy (they positively slay Purple at their own game here) and 3) total and utter band chemistry and performance, from the vocal all the way down to the grinding, groovy rhythm section. Seriously, Made in Japan… trawl all your Zeppelin bootlegs for that nugget of gold… you’ll not find one of the original English big four that is more on fire and on point than Heep are right here on “Shadows of Grief.” Martin Poppoff
