All emergency should be allowed smash onto everything that gets in their way, including cars, pedestrian, animals, buses, trucks, even if they're hauling a tanker trailer and even if a pedestrian with a stroller crosses the street.

In order to be appointed the driver of a police car you must be a certified DJ otherwise you'll be walking on duty

They couldn’t really go anywhere, there was a minor fender bender totally blocking the end of the street. Cars ended up driving around on the sidewalk

"Hey, what do you think will happen if we use the siren?" "We'll get a head ache..." Pretty much a line from TV show McMillan and Wife, back in the 70's. Nice to see things haven't changed much.

For reference, over in Sweden where I worked a few years police are authorized to use the sidewalks in code 1 situations.

That's got to be terrifying and aggravating trying to respond in those conditions! A few people could have at least TRIED to back up and MOVE out of the way! Thanks! Yup, pretty much all NYC emergency vehicles either already have or are getting the Federal Signal rumbler. Even fire engines now.

It’s true. In the 70s lots of NYPD cars had hi-lo, you can hear it in the original The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. One of my favorite movies. Also, side note, NYC EMS used to run lots of hi-lo too up until the mid/late 90s. Like the other person mentioned, it’s been making a comeback.

Variants of the Federal Signal Smart Siren since 1991. They’re mostly unchanged, with some slight variations in the manual tone + the addition of the rumbler in the last decade or so.

It's not the sirens, it's just traffic. If it wasn't so much and the roads was built better. The Fire, EMS and police could use minimum sirens and just blip or honk. But also remember some people can't drive, they'll be on the phone or doing something else. That's why rumblers are in NYPD and FDNY vehicles, so when you feel it. It hurts and makes you move.

The US is so pathetic in handling their emergency reaction policy towards the populace... In Germany we know of a "rescue corridor" (one of many names) and if you hear a siren you are legally required to take any space (pavement etc.) to get your car outta the way or you'll be fined for obstruction... That's why there's a siren in the first place. So people can make way soon enough... No matter so many incidents are unhandled for ages before law enforcement or emergency arrive over there... A country in need of 150 different signals to get exactly ONE car outta the way; that view speaks for itself.
