Urbex: Beautifully Eerie Abandoned Estate (THE CEDARS)

Ойын-сауық

*LATEST UPDATE* Sadly, this beautiful well-known local landmark burned down the night of July 7th, 2018.
*UPDATE* Thanks to Bruce Lamb, who grew up in this house for fighting for the Heritage Designation which was just passed by the City of London! Now, this house is protected. Way to go, Bruce!**
Bruce's website with past photos: www.brucelamb.com/the_cedars.asp
Exploring a very large abandoned well-known house and landmark in London, Ontario. This house was built in the 1880s and was originally a men's athletic or boating club, or possibly a drinking club that you took a boat to. The previous owners of this house and property were architects who sold the house to a land developer, Drewlo Holdings, in 1978 due to a divorce. The barn was known as "The Cottage", and the house was known as "The Cedars" and was always kept in the family from the time it was purchased from the boat club. The previous occupants rented this property from Drewlo Holdings for 35 years and were evicted in the summer of 2013 for their lack of care of the house. They had ponies and bred Mastiff dogs. Thanks to Bruce Lamb who grew up in this house from 1965 to 1978 for providing me with this information. Since seeing my video, he is now trying to get it Heritage Designated to protect it from being demolished by the developer. Whether he gets the designation or not is yet to be seen. Hopefully so.

The City of London passed the Heritage designation for The Cedars this week! But this is just Step 1. Next we have to use the Heritage Act to get the owner to keep the structure from getting any worse -- boarding the upper windows and doors would be a good start. And then, hopefully, we'll eventually get some action taken to restore it. I've volunteered to the owner that I'd arrange to get folks in to clean up the house and property if they'd provide the dumpsters, but so far they aren't willing to go that route. Still could be several years until action is taken -- but at least it shouldn't get into any worse shape. Thanks again, TikiTrex, for bringing the house's situation to light!

That was the Voyces house. I knew them in the 80's. There was a top paddock for horses and bottom paddock and barn. They had horses for equestrian riding, American quarter horses. The mother bred bull mastiffs and kept the pups in the room to the left of the bottom door. The ladder was a short cut from upstairs down to the kitchen.

When ever I was there. It was pretty dilapidated back in the early 80's. Smelled like horse shit. Go in the bottom door and up the stairs it had silver wallpaper. Bathroom upstairs had crumbling tiles. Living room area was ok though. Steves room still had little kid racing car wallpaper on it, we used to tease him about it. They never decorated/updated things. I have heard that the oldest Boy Steve had passed away years ago.maybe he died in the house-hense the stink? Maybe the mother went off the deep end over it, who knows? Maybe they went back to England. It is disturbing to see it like this and the memories of being in that house watching the horses in the paddock, from the upper balcony, petting the horses in the barn, seeing the new puppies each spring, which were in the room to the left of the ground floor door. there was an office on the right side of the door.. and being greeted by "winston" the huge 200 lb bull mastiff.

Going to work I used to drive by this abandoned two-story house probably built around the 1930’s and one day I noticed some construction activity around the house. A guy at work who lived in that town in Connecticut told me that the new owners had bought the house from the city for $1 and assumed the overdue taxes. I remember watching that derelict house being transformed into a beautiful home. They even built a large addition in the back, sort of a sunroom, with skylights and large picture windows. The results were amazing. It was done with great taste. It probably cost them less than building a new home considering that the area was very decent. I wish I could have seen that place inside.

That's what happened to a house built in the 1860's... They didn't destroy as much of the building.. most of that was natural.. but they pushed most of what furniture into the basement.. the main staircase fell down.. the floor was gone but they knocked over the refrigerator which was old and short but heavy... knocked over a piano.. broke what windows that weren't broken but amazingly they didn't touch the windows on the back of the house.. it was abandoned in the 90's some time... but I went inside to see what it was like since the front fell down.. and I saw a little bit of stuff left behind, that was in 2015.. in 2018 I saw most of that in the flooded basement.

Wow. Thanks for posting. I grew up in that house between about 1965 and 1978. My parents sold it when they divorced. It had been in the family for 60 years before we moved in. Lots of memories -- and it was a great place to grow up. A London developer purchased it from my parents -- Drewlo holdings -- and I think they still own it. The Voyce family moved in and rented it from Drewlo Holdings. They had ponies and big friggin' Mastiff dogs (about the size of ponies). Clearly, they rented it from 1978 to around 2009 from the video. My parents are architects, so there were lots of improvements when we were there, including the loft (where you first entered) and the ladder down to the kitchen. Mom ran her architectural practice out of the room on the ground floor. The barn was known as "The Cottage" because that is what it was back when the family owned it (I'm thinking) in the 1920's. My aunt Catherine tells of the family staying there in the summer months. The building was originally built as a boat and athletic club. My great-grandfather, Herbert A. Sabine, bought it from the Pocock family in 1906, who I believe bought it from boat club. Anyhow, it is very sad to see how much it has been abused over the years -- especially in the past few. It was a phenomenal place to grow up. 10 acres of land across from Springbank Park and about 400 m. to the public school. Great bones to the house. It would be wonderful if someone could buy it and restore it to its former glory.

***** We have lots of photos of it in the family archives from over the years. There were 3 maple trees in front of the house that you can see in these photos grow from saplings to fully grown mature maples. Eventually they died and we had to take them down (and they aren't there now), but it is amazing when you think of it that the house out-lived those big maple trees. Not sure if any of your viewers would care to see some of these old photos, but I can post them if you'd like. Certainly, the house had a great "personality", if that's the right word. My dad tried to buy it back from Drewlo Holdings a few years after we sold it, but they weren't interested. Interestingly, the house I live in now has a lot of the same features: built on a bank overlooking a river, ladder from the main floor to the basement floor. Horse barn not far away.

Bruce Lamb Thanks Bruce! Here I thought the whole thing was built by a farmer with a vivid imagination. Nice to know it was architects, farmers do come up with some good ideas! As long as they avoid building those ridiculously steep stairs... I'm okay lol. I think the ladder to the kitchen area was a cool concept. I wonder how that would fair in building codes these days though. The building codes seem to destroy all sense of imagination. Although some building codes are good for sure!

  • @BruceLamb

Actually, the house (known to the family as The Cedars) was built in the 1880's, originally as a mens athletic or boating club -- or possibly a drinking club that you had to use a boat to get to. The renovations that included the ladder were done around 1970 by my architect parents. My current house has a ladder as well -- from my office to the lower floor. And it was put in place in 2006 with memories of The Cedars in mind. So, apparently ladders can still pass the Ontario building code! Thanks for commenting!

Put up warnings, so they can choose whether to vandalise....or maybe just sprays with dyes, or dreadful stinks in, (Rot down tree mallow foliage and stems : you have never smelt such a stench !!!) in, so they could be identified later? It's partly because the place is not overlooked that these low-life types get away with such damage.....

The owners of the house were involved in horse racing in some capacity. I noticed that several of the books on the floor were "sales catalogs," descriptive catalogs of horse's pedigrees in an upcoming "sale" (auction). Also, there was a horse blanket in the barn that mentioned a "stakes" race. Such blankets are typically given to a winning horse.

With climate change and all Im sure The Upper Thames Conservation Authority would not allow development that close to the river edge if it was redeveloped on the future.

This is now my second watch. Had to come back, so nice to find you included some history on this place. A lot of history! The inside of the house, while trashed, is still inviting. It's just begging to be fixed up. The nature outside sounds so relaxing. I hate to see places with not only a cool history but architecture go to ruin. I do hope someone steps up and takes care of her. She's old yes but salvageable.

In most instances, these old aban houses were prob owned by elderly ppl who died/ neede spec care/ etc. And vandals are all the same where ever you go.... just looking for forgotten money, maybe guns, old gold coins in a desk drawer, you get the point. They're not interested in books or old clothes!!! Very sad.... and I wish Tiki would show us what she looks like, I like her voice.

It is a very sad day. This home was destroyed by fire over this past weekend. I grew up in Byron (London )and could see it from across the Thames River in Springdale Park close to Story Book Gardens. I did see a video on KZread that was recorded in February of this year. It appeared that there had been a major cleanup and the start of renovations to the inside of the home. Very sad if this loss is due to vandalizium.

Tragically what often happens to great old houses that are left junked up with lots of papers is neighborhood hop-heads go in to get high and set the house on fire. Then its gone forever. Places like this should be on the Historical Register, but it only takes one family of PIGS to ruin a beautiful old house.

I admire your respect for the places you visit. I have been viewing a lot of sites similar to yours and a lot of people are not as respectful. I too do not understand the vandals. Such a shame. I have noticed it seems to be mainly the United States that do the most vandalizing, and I live in Florida so....Keep up the great work!!

***** Houses over 100 years old can get the Heritage designation. It doesn't matter when someone lived in it last. People can even live in Heritage designated houses. Bruce Lamb is working hard at getting it, and what he is doing had made the news. This house been a landmark in London's history.

I think what you found there was a puppy mill. Which is a shame. That room is a loos now- the smell will NEVER go away, especially if urine soaked into the floor. I love that great room though. And the kitchen looked pretty cool.

I would definitely say fighting dogs. Those cruel people tend to hide dogs either in the woods or abandoned houses. The medical supplies would probably be used for treating wounds or altering the dogs' appearance like cropping ears or removing teeth.

  • @nannyberryfarm6478

+Laura Minnick The room may not be a complete loss. Many years ago we had a male cat urinate on a wood floor instead of in his litter box. The house is about a hundred now. We covered the wood floor in shellac and the smell was completely gone. I hate the smell of cat urine, there wasn't a hint left. It might take several gallons, but that old house would be worth it.

My ggrandfathers brother James Gibson Kerr (wife and family too) immigrated to and lived on Twin Stream Farm, Whitby, Ont from 1923. I arrived in Toronto in 1990 and was fortunate to stay for 2 days on the farm with one of the last of 13 children but never had a camera. I believe it is now long gone but I will forever have memories of my time there.

Looks like it could have possibly been a place where, after the house was abandoned, it was used for dog fighting. That corral is carpeted all around to soak up blood. The IV is for the aftermath of a dog fight and all the medical stuff is for injured dogs. I watched a lot of animal planet shows of cops rescuing dogs from fighting rings. They would take pictures of the evidence. And the evidence here is exactly like what the cops would find in dog fighting. this house looks like it could have been used for such an atrocity. I'm no expert but anyone with a good eye can tell.

Yeah I got that. I wouldn't mind moving there if I could find an abandoned place there close enough to a town where I could get a job and save some money. Clean it up, a fresh coat of paint, a nice comfy mattress, make a garden, and get some chickens in that barn. ... and just live there until the owner comes to claim it and then leave. I figure the owner wouldn't press charges as long as he sees I have taken care of the place for him and brought some life back into it. Right now I'm in the process of finding a van I can live in.
