Urban planning: A tool in our equity toolbox | Garett Shrode | TEDxHopeCollege
Since the dawn of modern cities, urban planning has been necessary to keep us healthy and safe. Throughout the 20th century, bad urban planning and infrastructure has created racial and economic divides across the US. Urban planners can use many tools to bridge these divides and create equity in these communities, including freeway removal projects and public transit infrastructure. While our fight against racial and economic injustice needs to be aggressively multifaceted, infrastructure is a great and easy place to start. Hey stranger! Remember that success is walking from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm. Keep pushing!💛
Impressive presentation from this young man! All I'll say is that the Big Dig in Boston didn't even come remotely close to fixing the traffic! But alas, traffic is everywhere and is for the most part, at least in or around any major cities, unavoidable. But don't think for a second that it fixed the traffic! 93 was bad even during Covid lockdowns!

Came here to save this. The only solution to traffic is public transportation and other alternatives to driving.
Systemic racism ends with those with governmental, financial and social influence. I thank you in advance.
Your equity is everyone is equally poor, let's try equality and merit to determine the future. Make better people, for a better world....
Thanks for giving idea
I remember when every TED Talk had a degree of intellectualism to it. Not most of them anymore do.
The reservation system in India is also about equality and equity. The government thinks that giving incentives to lower caste people in terms of jobs and admissions would benefit them. But what they are missing out is that incentives should be given in terms of education, and not jobs. So again, this is all about equity and equality.
I'm always disgusted by the limitlessly car-centered life and everything seen in US. It's dehumanizing, regardless of color or gender or whatever. It's not for humans on the long or even mid run.
I will.agree participation is important..

Short, precise and informative, well done. I hope more architecture students, architects and other relevant stakeholders come across this presentation.

I've a dream, one I will be talking at TEDx platform just like this man.
Take the land from Minority citizens to build freeways, decide they don't want/need the freeway anymore....but STILL don't consider giving it back to the people they took it from.

Give back? They didn't "take it".. They had to pay for it. Those people likely ended up in a better place anyway. Every time I've ever moved, it was to a better place than the last.

@@calholli I'm sorry that you believe that. You should do your research.
When I first saw the title, I thought that you meant "financial equity." Another way to make urban planning a capitalist commodity.
Ah yes, equity. The act of disproportionately impeding a large group of people by virtue of their skin tone. There's another word for that, you know?

@@AM-fh7ek : Value is created every time human labor turns raw material into a usable product. (A cabbage isn't worth as much as coleslaw.) Every worker should be able to own the value of his own labor. The trouble starts when one person, who has more wealth or status than the workers, claims that the added value is his "private property." You never see the Carnegies working in a steel mill. Yes, there's no problem with personal private property. There's a huge problem with stealing other people's labor, cheating them out of the fair price for their work, and claiming as your own "private property." Read Thorstein Veblen's The Theory of the Leisure Class for a description of how we got here.

Different from my country The government builds a thousand highways everywhere. No matter with deforestation, global warming, or economic crisis. Fkoff
This kid has a very generous definition of the word planning. When you're talkin about government and planning in the same sentence, I don't think that word means what you think it means.
Please, no more density!!!
