00:00 - Intro
00:46 - With seemingly more companies (Push, Manitou, Intend, ect...) coming out with inverted forks. Do you think they are the future?
01:33 - Can you give me some advice on how to make my old RockShox Judy XC
(2000) more comfortable/how to service??
04:10 - How come nobody released a bead-lock wheel yet? For DH of course
PS: If any company sees this and goes through with the idea I would love a free wheelset pretty please
07:25 - I had a WTB Trail Boss and after 4 months use I found it deflating through the week so serviced it with a refresh of sealant but the fresh kept leaking through the sidewall of tire, still plenty of life in the tread, so I dropped in a tube. Would removing old dry sealant have caused the issue?
09:24 - I have a 2014 Canyon Spectral with 2014 FOX 32 Talas forks. Can I get away with putting new technologies in it?
10:57 - Want to get a Saracen Ariel 80 pro but 180 travel is a tad too much for me, would lowering the travel evenly front and rear affect the geometry badly? (I chose this bike cuz I love the green it comes in)

    @@Justkeepshredding go for it! being your best mechanic is how you learn. But, everything is very specific on the situation. In a park, ya i would go no more than 150mm and slam away because I AM BMX FOR LIFE, BUT then if i go wild in the rough I would go 200mm if I could. It is all what you feel comfortable with? Don't be afraid to change a lot to suite you needs at any given moment. • @DirtlovR

    @DirtlovR

    The answer is really simple: weight. MX forks can be made stiff because weight isn't that much of a factor. In mtb weight was always important, less in downhill/freeride where some interted forks appeared (like already mentioned Dorado or a good old Marzocchi Shiver), more in xc or trail riding. Drawbacks of inverted forks simply outweigh the advantages.

Those same people said we'd never have shocks on bikes, period. Mountain roadies need not apply. This will be DH and Enduro specific before anything else.

    In the motorcycle world, the benefit of increased rigidity at the clamps (larger tubes at the top) dealing with braking forces and lateral flexing forces, the less unsprung mass reciprocating when the suspension strokes was the real reason.

    It's a few things really: 1. Ease of swapping wheels. It's still a concern to have easy to remove wheels for trailsode service. 2. Weight, especially of the clamp. You'd increase the unsprung weight too much with the clamp 3. Cross compatibility, with standard parts. The upside down forks never got enough market share because of the other issues to justify the oversized hubs that would make it competitive.

    2014 Fox Talas is still a nice fork, still a fair competition to modern 30...34mm forks. Rather depends on the damping cartridge if you have performance or factory build. And to be fair, that was a somewhat pivotal year in tech. Bike in question has thruaxles, shorter stem, routing for the dropper and most probably 29 inch wheels (depends on the size). Now try upgrading something mainstream from 2013 - pretty much everything goes to bin

    For the tire sealant question: I recently bodged a tubeless setup with a non-tubeless tire and rim by using that bucket technique. The tire was leaking air out of the sidewall and bead for about a day before it sealed. Just be patient with it and keep the tire level and rotate every so often. It also may have helped that I used double the recommended amount of sealant to ensure there was enough to get everywhere. For anyone curious: it’s a Fincci clincher tire from Amazon on a standard aluminum Specialized “tube only” rim (schreader valve hole).

    #askgmbn greetings the owens and the anns! So... I'm running an advent X (10s 11-48 range) with a 32t -3 mm offset sram xsync 2 chainring... I'm noticing the chain line lands straight in the 6-7th gear and when in 1st the chain line is way too crooked and indeed some creaking noises come from either the chainring or the cassette (im yet to truly tell on that), the noises decrease as i go up gears and from 5th the noise stops. I just recently changed chain and make sure the transmission is well tuned. Should I change to a -6 mm offset chainring? Rear axle is 148. I do plenty of flats and uphill. Bottom bracket area seems that would fit a -6 mm. Thanks!

    Im not 😅 ive had upside down forks for 20 years on different MX bikes and fork seal leaks are a pain. Pain to service yourself and expensive to pay someone. Even doing it yourself the tools can get pricey..not to mention different speciality tools for different shocks. Sure either type of shock seal can leak..but when and upside down one does it pretty much needs immediate attention. It can leak more oil out there for damaging the shock. On a regular traditional mtn bike fork it can leak a little bit and you can usually ride all summer (if not years lol😅)..

    I find it funny that this fork inversion is considered "upside down" when motorcycles and cars have used the inverted design for probably more than 80 years before bike designers made the first suspension bike fork and decided that inverting a proven design was the way to go.

  • @gpearce11

    @gpearce11

    Ай бұрын

    A couple of reasons. Firstly, USD forks have actually only existed for about 30 years, not 80, so there's decades more time and research spent on "traditional" forks. Secondly, and more importantly, USD forks are only really superior in two circumstances: travel over 250mm, and lateral stiffness. Hence why even on motorcycles you tend to only find USD forks on MX (for the travel) and sports bikes (for the braking stiffness). For bicycles, USD forks have some noticable disadvantages. The first is weight; for pretty much ever discipline except DH there a trade off between weight and performance that does not land in USC'S favour. The second is stiffness; on a 250+kg sports bike decelerating from 150-to-0 km/h, that lateral stiffness is a godsend, on a 20kg mtb trying to navigate roots on single track, the noticable decrease in torsional (i.e. turning) stiffness is a detriment. I definitely think USD dual-crown forks are awesome for freeride/DH, where the weight matters less, and the burlier overall nature of the fork helps with torsional stiffness (as does the burlier 110x20mm axle), but for single crown Trail/Enduro forks the cons tend to outweigh the pros.

    @@gpearce11 I think you misread me, I said that the moto and auto fork design had been in place and used for the better part of 80+ years at the time bicycle suspension forks came along and redesigned the orientation. Not that bicycle suspension forks were 80 years in use.

  • @gpearce11

    @gpearce11

    Ай бұрын

    @PuffinPass And I think you misread me. The inverted fork design, commonly known as upside-down (USD) forks, has only been used by motorcycles since the early 1990s. The design literally didn't exist before then. MTB suspension designers didn't change anything; they just used the system that had been the standard for motorcycle forks for the previous 80 years. Not to mention, as I stated in my comment, with the exception of dirt bikes with 200+ mm forks and performance oriented road bikes (where inverted forks are now the norm), "traditional" forks (the style used in 99% of MTB suspension) are still overwhelmingly more common.

    #askgmbntech I enjoy the efficiency of my short travel (130/110) bike. However, I bottom out the suspension 3+ times / ride doing ~4' drops and fairly basic jumps in 15 miles of riding. Is this frequency of bottoming out harmful to the bike? Does it require additional maintenance? If it is harmful, is increasing the pressure / decreasig sag a good option (I currently have ~25% sag)? Conversely, friends have longer travel bikes and virtually never bottom out. Does this mean they may be over-biked?

    OK, so this whole talk about stiffness is getting old because it has its pros and it has its cons. In the early 90s frames on bikes were going to the ultra stiff but there was one brand that realized that stiff was great but there was a time when a hardtail would need some flex in order to track and keep the rider from getting the ever loading POPE FROM FROM GETTING KICKED OUT OF HIM. Thank you Salsa for putting out flexi cro-mo hardtails when every one wanted Cannondale bone jarring BBC(iff you dont know the acronym then leave it alone). Suspension is the same sort of animal, while you want the stiffness to track where you want to go, you also want the flexibility to go off line and recover and you want the flex to be able to recover from a mistake. Push has already eluded to that concept when they admitted that their fork was not the stiffest but there fork was stiff and COMPLIANT! Riders! REMEMBER!, that all of our tech comes from motocross. If you know this then you have to have a sense of history in the industry in order to move forward. I was Suzuki that realized that upside down forks had their advantages in 1994 but, that on lighter weight rigs like 125cc, they needed a little more flex in their forks because the bikes were not heavy enough to combat the tortional flex. They then went back to regular forks while getting rid of the massive under hang that would get caught in ruts. Through research they were able to go back to USD forks after about 5 years when they figured out were to make USD forks flex to their benefit. I love your guys info and cant wait until your next episode but I think you need some history lessons to fully nerd out on certain things. You all ROCK!

    Stop baiting Martyn! You know he’ll happily talk all things Cannondale for hours and… hours, he’s probably filming a 2 hour history of how important they were to the cycling industry to compliment the video Doddy did a couple of years ago. 😂

    #ASKGMBNTECH Hello, I have a 2021 KTM Ultra Sport, with RockShox Judy Silver with 9mm QR axle. The right stanchion has vertical silver lines of missing black paint. Is it possible to put new uppers from different fork brands and models to my existing lowers, as an upgrade? I don't want to change the lowers, they look and work good, and I don't want to change the wheel to fit different axles.

    When I was looking to get my first set of suspension forks. I was looking at a set of RockShox Judy SL forks with a wopping 63mm of travel. I was also looking a a set of inverted forks with 50mm of travel. I cannot remember the name of these forks. I do remember as they were pre disc brake forks. the cantilever bosses came through slots in the uppers. I did go for the Judys. Inverted forks are not new. They do make more sense not they can be built better and stronger.

    Don't' some tire inserts "act" like a bead lock ???

    #askgmbn are tanwall tires always more lightweight/poures or do some brands prefer the aesthetic. Looking for more of a rule of thumb and less gospel. To clarify I'm a huge fan of the tanwalls.

    We don’t need bead locks on MTBs. Tubeless is plenty good.

    Suppose it wouldn't be to difficult to 3D print a beadlock prototype for testing but then it would mount in to the hundreds of different wheels sets angles sizes widths 30mm plus for inside bead then to form something from carbon as alloy would just be to heavy n make the rim stiff as heck, it really wouldn't be worth the money invested into it you wouldn't known where to stop for mtb

    #askgmbntech isn't a huge shame that EWS is slowly killing the 24h of Finale Ligure? Last year, the race was canceled because the world cup stage in Finale was on the weekend when they usually do the 24h, this year it's apparently going to be the same, I contacted the 'Finale Outdoor Region' and they said they are so busy with the EWS they don't know yet if the 24h will take place this year, what a shame! F... Enduro!

    Sigh. here we go again. If it were better, it would be the standard. Its likely found to not be the best design because if it were, Fox, RockShox would've adopted this many years ago.

    @@PhilipChannon That was a great looking bike. I know the design came from the Marin frames (Jon Whyte designed?) of that era, but the 46 had the cleaner lines and was less agricultural looking than the Marins. Top bike!

    #AskGMBNTech Why do we use CO2 cartridges to fill our tyres, Since CO2 has a significantly higher solubility in rubber is it not detrimental to use it in tyres? Why not use HPA (High Pressure Air)? Do they use the CO2 cartridges because the manufacturing process is already there for air guns and its a cost thing?
