Toughness decreases the amount of damage taken from sources that would have done lots. Diamond and netherite both have toughness, a full set having 8 and 12 respectively. This may not sound like a lot, but that means hard hitting damage sources do 50% less damage to someone in netherite than in diamond.

how is armor supposed to help?? Scientifically speaking, the leather armor would actually be the best one for this situation... If the armor doesn't break, the full force of the fall will be transferred to your body because of momentum. This is why motorcycle helmets are actually made to be broken, it's so that the force of the fall will be reduced by the helmet breaking. Leather armor in this situation can help most tho (even if I still dont think it's going to save me from a fatal drop), because of leather being able to act as a cushion, and reduce the impact of the fall.
