I’m actually doing this. Starting with Mac OS 9.2.1 on my iMac G3
All those startup / welcome videos and their various songs bring back some memories. I used to work at an agency during this period and we deployed upwards of 1,000 macs. For a long time it wasn't possible/easy to image them, so we'd have banks of them setup with install discs and then these songs going off seconds apart as someone clicked Accept on the first, then second, then third, etc etc etc. 10.5 was easily the worst one of them all. Thanks for the 00's memories Ross

Mavericks was the best. Though that Tiger to Leopard upgrade is the largest single version improvement in design in the entire collection IMO
@Freshbott2

@@tompov227 gross I can’t agree on Mavericks. But Tiger to Leopard was magical and Snow Leopard really cemented it. My Core 2 Duo MacBook felt fast with a crappy HDD. I really hope Apple goes back to a proper tic toc cycle and does a modern day Snow Leopard optimisation.
@tompov227

@@Freshbott2 Mavericks was really just Snow Leopard but with a few nicer optimizations. Granted the buttons changed from round to squircle but besides that what is the objection to mavericks
@Freshbott2

@@tompov227 I recall installing Mavericks on a MacBook Pro and thinking it was slow because MacOS was indexing. But it just never came good. But it’s also softer, they changed the colour of highlights and dulled the glossiness. I believe they also changed how the maximise button works and changed Expose to a weird overlaid category type do. Maybe I’m biased cause Tiger and Leopard are what got me into it and Snow Leopard was the first one I had.
What is striking to me is how modern the TiBook STILL looks. If it was a bit thinner and lighter and had a webcam, it would fit right in with the Macs of today. One could argue that design-wise that that (lighter, thinner TiBook with modern ports/processor/camera) is essentially the MacBook Pro today.
THIS is the content I need on KZread!

Nice video. I loved the 10.4 part, brought so many memories of me using my mom’s MacBook Pro 1,1. We never upgraded so it stayed with 10.4 and still has it to this day. I have that MacBook now, and it made me a vintage Mac collector.

I’d need all the Macs and corresponding software for that; perhaps I could film at some museum with given permission one day. I have some System 7 floppies, possibly 6 somewhere too, and maybe an OS 8 CD. Best I could do for now was this Unix / 2000 edition. OS 9 seemed like a good starting point to upgrade from into a new era.

Thanks for the comment, and yes absolutely. The changing architectures and partition schemes pose a different challenge from that over on the Windows PC side of things. I’d say completing this upgrade chain on real Macs was in fact easier than the time I did it with virtual machines. Of course, acquiring older hardware and software can be tricky. Already having everything certainly helped, just had to get that iBook - the Indigo iMac G3’s been long gone. Starting at System 1.0 (0.97 or whatever), and upgrading on real Macs is next. My best option to show both the entirety of Classic Mac OS and UNIX macOS would be to do the first half, perhaps both, in arrangement with a museum. Fortunately, I know of one - they have all the Macintoshes and possibly original install media too, so stay tuned…

Thanks for making a really awesome video! By the way, have you considered to upgrade to macOS 14 from 9 in minimal steps instead of each version?
@RossDarker
2 ай бұрын
Thanks. I suppose this could be done in 1 step: install OS 9 onto the iBook, transfer to the newest Mac and install the latest macOS on top of the existing install. Perhaps it's not quite what you meant, but that would certainly be quickest.
That was the revolution to macOS Sonoma for all MacBook(s)!
nice macs bro!
I like this its so satisfying
In retrospect I think I like Leopard's and Snow Leopard's design the best. At the time I felt it al was a bit too grey and business-like compared to Tiger. I missed the brushed metal finder windows and the aqua buttons, but later I started to like it very much. I wish Apple would go back to that design a bit, a bit more 3D and textured, not as flat. Luckily they still kept the shadow under the windows.
I really like all versions of 10.0, then 11 came and I found it all a bit boring
geez the startup server music on macos 9.2 on the G3 is heavy 😢
thank. its a good video
What about from NeXTStep 3.1 to 4.2, then upgrade that directly to Mac OS X Tiger, then every version onwards?
This is so magic how the design of the Ibook looks like. This is so similar to what we have

all this literally needs is just a capture card and it being sped up like the OG video and i would watch that start to finish, although im very impressed with you, good job, im proud of you after completeting this over the course of 9 MONTHS
@RossDarker
11 ай бұрын
I did think about capture cards but decided it was nice to see the Macs as well this time for more authenticity. And yes, it’s longer this video. I’ve gone for more of a film-style, where it will take time, but should be easier to watch than the previous video which was quite crudely edited. Many parts are still sped up apart from those I thought should be seen at 1x, or not be too fast. I may make a condensed version where there is less showcasing and just upgrading. For now, KZread’s speed setting is OK; used it for checking over the video the final time. Some clips may sound odd when played back at fast speeds however. Must mention too, wasn’t quite nine months, but that certainly was when the idea was formed and going to actually happen. Filmed and edited in June for the most part. Thanks

How did you get OS X Tiger To Boot On QEMU and how did you use the EFI Patcher In Parallels
@RossDarker
9 ай бұрын
If you’re referring to the previous video, as of course I’m using real Macs here, I got Tiger PPC running quite easily in Qemu just from the right start command. These days UTM can be of great help for setting things up. The EFI patch on Parallels is version specific, in fact, build specific. It’s easier to do in VMWare Fusion where the patch works with any build of the program. One can even run Tiger Intel this way too. You just need to put some patch files in the right place, correctly incorporate them into the VM, then it’ll run. See what you can find, it’s rewarding to do research, locate and do these ‘hacks’ yourself, good luck!
