Upgrading a Cheap Plastic Kayak With a Hatch and Watertight Bulkhead

Ғылым және технология

A simple way to add storage and flotation to a cheap plastic kayak! This is an 8' Water-Quest Aruba model (These are common under various names at big chain stores). I sealed off the rear area with sprayfoam and installed a watertight hatch in the stern. Now I can store stuff and keep it dry while out paddling! Total cost was under $20 and these kayaks can be found on sale for under $100. A hatch and bulkhead, plus some of my earlier mods like bow bungees, gives this the features of a $200 kayak model!

The follow up water test video you promised is hidden in your reply to a comment below, but the link should be up in the description, or a thumbnail at end of video. Even if it was a fail, the video could've highlighted that a 1" layer would've been better, and other lessons learned, to include what the foam edges look like after a few months, what color they turn, what grunge tends to collect on it, what others have done that works better, like the guy below suggested a rubber coating.

Great idea. Plus the spray foam will help it float, and maybe carry more cargo.

An interesting and fun modification. Pretty nifty.

So those expanding foam things need a lot of air flow to cure... I learned that one when trying to fill a ball up with it for a school project. It seems that you need to use layers and you can get up to around 3 inches thick but like especially in an enclosed area like that where it is blocked in on 3 sides I might only do 2 inch thick layers at a time and I would try to increase airflow in there by aiming a fan at it. It also doesn't seem like the most water proof stuff. I would put some rubber on it either painted on or sprayed rubber. Flex seal even has a red colored spray rubber so you could completely water proof it and it would look better with the color. Black would probably look fine and work on the others though and maybe seal it from inside the hatch to and around the new hatch. Maybe even hit the seat with it if you want some better butt grip possibly the handle edge as well and if you have red under the bungee things. You could make another video on it so you might be able to earn the cost of the can back if things go well.

Fyi that spray foam is open cell and not closed cell. Ie: it absorbs water and as such over time will actually NOT help the yak float but rather rot and mold away. Neat idea, wrong foam for the job.

Bought a cheap kayak without foot rests/pegs. Got a video on how to fill forward bulkhead? Read that closed cell foam will fill the void.

I haven't done a forward bulkhead yet. It's on my list to make a form-fitting plug of some sort, maybe out of semi-rigid foam.

Well, that sure is a cheap kayak. The modification probably cost more than the kayak..

How well has this held up. I have no experience with spray foam for around windows and don't know how flexible it remains once set. I am considering this for my kayak, but don't really want to clean up a bunch of foam if it doesn't remain flexible enough.

It's held up fine as far as I can tell. We've had the kayak out on the water a few times since I modified it, but it's been less than a year since I did this so I don't know about long-term durability. I tested the kayak in this video and the rear compartment stayed pretty dry: kzread.info/dash/bejne/k51qy5qJpcKthag.html

Kayaks flex. How did the spray foam bulkhead hold up once you used it?

I haven't noticed any issues, but I've only had this kayak out a few times since adding the foam. I suspect with a boat this small it will be fine, the foam is still somewhat flexible after setting up.

Do you keep the days-since-accident counter up to date? Somehow i doubt youve made it 600+ days unscathed! @1:43

This is closed cell foam which doesn't absorb water. It's for insulating and waterproofing windows.
