Upgraded FTX Outlaw Kicking-up Sand

Ойын-сауық

The FTX Outlaw continues to be a popular, entry-level RC Truck. My brushless, upgraded FTX Outlaw continues to be a fragile money pit.
Today, we take it to the beach, cross our fingers and hope for the best.

    I made a rear sway bar from some 3mm stainless rod, 2 drop links (that can be turned so the holes are at 90° to each other), some 3mm washers, and 2 25mm m3 bolts. It sits just above the lower arms, and goes through where the lower arms attach to the chassis (bottom of the 2 holes). It's absolutely transformed the handling of my sons Zorro (same chassis as your Outlaw), and was well worth the £15 on parts. 😎👍🏻

    I have one of these also and loose sand is this truck's home. If I remember correctly, my box even says 'sand truck.' Amazingly I don't find much sand incursion since as you said the spur box is not sealed. My one dream modification/upgrade I would like to see for it would be a centre diff to see if that helps the handling, but I haven't found an off the shelf solution.

  • @TheRCScotsman

    @TheRCScotsman

    Ah, now that would transform it! I certainly haven't heard of anyone building an Outlaw with a centre diff, though.

    Replace the body and the tyres from the Zorro, perhaps slightly higher gearing cuz of the smaller tyres, then it should corner much better, roll over much less likely or even when it does, it'll land more often on it's tyres than on it's roof/side. Also it'll break less as a result of the things above. Those tyres on the outlaw are crawling tyres, ergo they are very sticky, grippy and soft so they aren't meant to handle that speed.

  • @TheRCScotsman

    @TheRCScotsman

    While you are correct, the Zorro setup would lower CoG and reduce roll, I have to point out that: 1- smaller tyres give lower gearing, not higher, 2- I'm not looking for the trophy truck look, and 3- the foam inserts in the Zorro tyres are of such poor quality that they quickly degrade and break apart. This leads to the tyre wall no longer being supported, so they start tucking-under, during cornering. They're good for a while, but soon end up just as bad, or worse, than the Outlaw tyres. Not ideal! I'm not running the original Outlaw tyres. These are the Fastrax Granite 2.2 tyres and they are harder and less grippy, with stronger sidewalls, than the Outlaw tyres. Thanks, though! 👍

    @TheRCScotsman what changes with the solid axle? I have bought the block but haven't mounted it yet. I think it might improve power delivery but make it harder to turn. Is that what happens?

  • @TheRCScotsman

    @TheRCScotsman

    9 ай бұрын

    Exactly. It's less smooth and composed when cornering, as the inside wheel will always spin at the same rate as the outside wheel. This can cause sliding/hopping/skipping. However, power deployment is enhanced, as equal and full power gets sent to both wheels, allowing the truck to dig-in and push harder. Especially noticeable from a stand-still, or out of slow corners.

    @@TheRCScotsman I mostly use it on loose dirt, so it might not be a problem as it slides a lot already. Do you think it's possible to flip the differentials so that the motor rotation is clockwise? I'm using brushed motors for durability but as it is, they have to spin counterclockwise.

  • @TheRCScotsman

    @@mariog1051 That's the perfect surface to run it on and you'd probably gain from the increased drive. I'd say go for it! Nah, I doubt it. The diff housings are sided and cannot be flipped. You'd be better off simply buying a brushed motor that isn't timed in one direction.

    @@TheRCScotsmanperfect! As it's already on the bench due to the front suspension holder having met a tree, I'll fit the rear diff blocker as well.
