Great video ! You proved it is possible to remove, and install, the intake manifold with everything still attached (fuel rail, MAP sensor).

That was one of the first things I swapped out when I did a Stage II upgrade on my trike. Easy couple HP and torque.

APRIL 2023 paid cash for the FXST...had my dealer put an aluminum intake manifold and drag bars before she came off the showroom floor. I think the plastic manifold on an air-cooled machine is crazy. I started seeing it on liquid cooled autos and thought that was pretty lame years ago.

I hurried up and liked this video so you wouldn't kick my dog. 😂😂 Great content guys!

Hey, just took your advice and ordered the newer S&S Premium 55mm CNC Ported Black Manifold. The bike was already dyno-tuned a while back, so will installing just this throw that tune off and make me have to get it re-tuned? Thank you. You will not have to retune the bike if you are just swapping the manifold. If you change to a bigger throttle body you will want to retune but with just swapping the manifold you should be fine. Thanks for the support!

What is the largest practical setup in a 114 for manifolds and injectors without bumping up to a large bore?

It depends on the rest of your motor. If you have a cam, plan on doing a big bore later, etc. We have had good luck with the 62mm throttle bodies on both big bore builds and stock displacement with a cam. Injectors just depends on your setup too. You usually won’t need bigger injectors unless you have a really aggressive cam or a big bore.

Just wondering if you have one for a 2015 Fatboy? My bike already has the VH shorty pipes along with a aftermarket air cleaner.

There are a couple companies that make them, although your bike should already have an aluminum intake manifold so you don't need it as much as the M8 motors do. If you are wanting to upgrade anyways, I would suggest doing the HPI intake manifold/throttle body combo.

Does it have to be ported and polished to be effective? I have 107 with s&s 475 adj. Push rods tappet cuffs and lifters. S.E. hi flow intake breather and 2-1 bassani exhaust. Wanting to replace intake manifold What increase can I expect?

No, it doesn't. A port and polish helps, but like we said in the video, the main reason to replace it is to get rid of the plastic and avoid it warping and causing intake seal leaks. It's not going give you a huge increase in power but a leak will definitely hurt performance.

What’s your opinion, I have read that the S&S castings are terrible, that if you were to mic both intake ports they are off from one another plus they say the internal casting is really rough, they say that actually Harleys SE is a way better product. Problem currently Harley needs to get there shit together there intakes are 5 weeks back order for the past two months. I may end up getting the S&S. Thank you for the video!

This is the 2nd time I've heard about issues with S&S. I heard a few weeks ago at an H-D dealership that one of the employees recently installed an S&S cam kit and the heat treat on the cam was bad, causing it to flake. It was bad enough that the metal flakes plugged the oil pump and ruined the pump. And to make it worse, they said S&S customer service was piss poor

The casting isn't as smooth as something like the HPI, but we've never had any issues with them.

@@TuckerSpeed477 Good to hear. I like supporting local when I can, and being a WI resident, I've been interested in S&S. My brother lives close to Fuel Moto, and I told him to ask those guys if they have heard about this at all. They do a lot of S&S installs as well.

Any reason you didn't go with bigger intake and TB (58 mm, 64mm etc) ?

We just did what the customer wanted on this one. We do usually run the HPI 62mm throttle body on most of our builds though.

If you install that s&s 55mm manifold, the stock TB and that s&s will give you more than enough. You don’t need to replace the TB.

@@chuckg554 I disagree but to each their own. The bigger throttle body is always going to help. It’s not 100% necessary but will definitely help out.

Can you please tell me more about this intake manifold, im thinking this could be the one now, I did not know anything about it. Being a 58mm versus 55mm did that make any difference, was it a direct bolt up in just replacing the stock 55mm plastic one with the original throttle body and injectors and so forth. Thank you for any information.

@@tennesseebound6597 yes replaces stock intake. Will except stock 55mm throttle body as well as hpi 58&62mm throttle bodies. It leaves room to expand. It’s a no brainer for the price it’s ported and polished to a mirror finish. Hpi quality is second to none. I was looking at s&s also until I found this one. I changed it when I did my cam. Did a rs468, hpi intake, 5.5 fuel moto injectors and the usual cam swap components. I think of it as a stage two plus. Also went with the sceamin eagle 1275 hd clutch springs. Everything works great together.

Awesome thank you, currently all i have done was a set of slip ons and a new high volume air filter, that’s when I noticed that the intake was loose as a goose, then I started researching the plastic intake in how it becomes junk. Want to change it out, next year go with a cam. Purchased a Dynojet jet power vision 3 from fuel moto that they send a tune installed, haven’t flashed the bike yet, want to change out the intake first. Was going to buy the SE one but it’s still on back order, came across your suggestion and loving that idea. Thank you.

Your Tech-Tips R the💣! I will leave my manifolds loose till I set the breather bolts. Also leaving the tool in the screws as a reminder is smart. Dialectic in the O ring channel. Big One, 2022 I had Blockhead run my Fat Boy with Woods 22XE, and S&S Chest, Power Vision but no manifold. Now I'm running lean. So I got the SE 64mm manifold and intake with 5.5 injectors. It is a little frustrating that this advice still doesn't come from definition of a "Stage II". With my limited knowledge a manifold/injectors is necessary part of a cam change if power is one's motivation. OBTW, the reason why "black is back" is familiar, because it comes from an old saying..."white is right, black get back". Knowledge is power, brother. 2FD ET1(SS/SW/MTS) US Navy, Ret.

@@aa79912 if it's just the manifold, you probably don't need to retune it but if you are replacing the throttle body you should probably retune it.

My stock manifold has done 25000. No problem

i dont think its a reliability issue. during the hot summer months. the aluminum will help keep the air from not heating up as fast. plus plastic on air cooled v twin motors is just wrong. just sayin..

That's great that you haven't had any issues yet, but it is a common issue we see. Also, there is a possibility that you may have some warping and a slight intake leak and not even realize it, may be leaving a little performance on the table.

Why install high-quality parts from the factory when most of your customers are going to replace them anyway? It’s very expensive but also makes every Harley one of the kind after the work is done.

I usually buy a Harley touring bike knowing it’ll need suspension, exhaust, bars and a cam chest kit. You gotta pay to play but plenty of guys put slip on pipes and run the dog shit out of them.

I've never seen a plastic manifold fail. How's it junk?

​@@TuckerSpeed477 Yes, I saw a brief accusation of warping from heat. I thought you would have an example or some specifics. There are none. Plastic is smoother, lighter, and isolates heat better.?. Plus its what the manufacturer put on a lot of bikes. I've never seen a recall.

@@johnnypartain3461 We work on tons of these bikes in the shop and have seen them first hand with intake seal leaks from the stock plastic manifold. The plastic manifold is new to Harleys on the M8 motor. True, they have not recalled anything yet, but we are just addressing a problem that we have experienced many times in the shop.

It's not the throttle body, it's the intake manifold behind the throttle body. If yours is stock, it DOES have a plastic manifold, they all do.
