Upgrade: The Modern Day Terminator (& Robocop)

Leigh Whannel's 2018 Horror / Action sci-fi extravaganza, Upgrade, is a sorely underrated movie. To my mind its the closest thing we've ever had to a true successor to both the Terminator and Robocop. Where those films had watered down sequels, often appealing to a PG-13 market with ballooning budgets, Upgrade keeps to the spirit of the 1984 and 1987 classics by squeezing every cent of its costs to deliver awesome action and worldbuilding. I'm going to break down everything I love about this truly special movie...

@@FullFatVideosThat's not what jack means. They mean that if you look at this movie like a Venom movie, it's a better Venom movie than the actual Venom movie that came out. Because in the end it's about a similar theme: 2 personalities inhabiting the same body and one of them (the one foreign to the host) giving the host abilities that they wouldn't have otherwise. Yes, Upgrade isn't based on Venom. But with how pisspoor the Tom Hardy Venom movie was (fun as a dumb action movie but not good as a Venom movie, despite Tom Hardy being an excellent actor and clearly having fun in the role) it's not hard for people to lament what could've been if the Venom movie took more from Upgrade.

I'm so glad you're covering this film. It's one of those movies that eeks the absolute most it can from it's budget through the use of tricks and techniques that don't cost lots of extra money like creative lighting, camera work and blocking. The nasty gritty world adds to effect. It reminds me of other low budget labors of love like the original Saw, District 9, Mad Max and I am Mother although it has a very clean aesthetic the rest of points remain. The fact it came out around the same time as Venom is hilarious to me because Upgrade is by far the better "mind/body controlling parasite/chip/symbiote" movie. It's one of those funny things that happens like Olympus has fallen/Whitehouse down, Bugs life/Antz, Over the Hedge/Madagascar, Barbie/Oppenheimer (j/k) coming out together. If you like Upgrade then the book Amped by Daniel H Wilson is right up your alley.

I had another show in mind when i saw upgrade... the first interactions of Trace and Stem on the hunt made me think foundly of Knight rider when Michael was starting with Kitt. I still think it would have been great to have a series about a new "Knight rider" (Stem host) getting hired for a "knight foundation" (Keene foundation) working to stop the "Karr" (Trace) villain doings. Bonus points it they brought back Eron Keen VI to redeem himself, body upgrades between seasons, more Stem Hosts, later interactions with good and bad government organizations. And Grey Trace VI when he separates from Stem.

Stem sounds very close to one of my favorite book trilogies. T2 by S.M. Stirling, books were commissioned to help build hype for the T3 movie. The novels have the 'Temporal Cold War' later featured in TV's SCC. Following Sarah, John and some people with interests related to the events of T1 and T2. The main minion of Skynet sent back is an augmented human raised in Skynet's black-sites, experimented on and implanted with 'the chip' so it can integrate with the host (plus a number of extra CPU's and power cells to build with after displacement). A lot like STEM, the dialog and action between human/CPU/Skynet adds so much gravity to the narrative. And in case anyone is wondering 'Hey, that book series sounds good, bet it would have made better script material than T3/4/5/6/7/8...'. Yes.

Fantastic movie, watched it at first for the fight scenes with the brilliant camerawork, but loved it for, well, pretty much everything. STEM from the end of Upgrade would absolutely take the world without any difficulty, although its hard for a human to imagine how it would do it. Probably it would just invent nanotechnology and disassemble all humans into their component elements in under a month. Not the most thrilling in terms of cinematography, but it would present a really good ticking deadline if Logan was able to try and reassert control within that month.

These are the times we live in: We cling to the things we know and don't even dream of giving new ideas a chance. While Star Trek is remaking the Wrath of Khan, Star Wars is digging old Palpatine out of the closet. Even with strong and established IPs, no new ideas are realised. But who is really to blame here? The studios that spend millions of dollars and prefer to play it safe? Or us, the viewers, who are not willing to spend money on an overpriced evening at the cinema for a film that they don't know whether it will suit their taste?

Upgrade was great, I regret not seeing it in a theater. I honestly don't even remember when in the year it released and why I didn't see it. Kind of the same thing with M3GAN earlier in 2023. Like, why did I wait for the rental from Redbox (because screw streaming services)? I should be supporting these lower budget movies more often because they've been highly more enjoyable than the big budget stuff lately, and the more stuff like this gets in theaters and stays there because of good reception, the more balanced out theaters will be and Hollywood can actually support itself again and the current writers and actor strikes wouldn't be as long running as they have been (although these strikes are still very much warranted because they come from a place of changing technology and compensating for that, not just because the CEOs keep banking on things that keep flopping).

@@FullFatVideos In the US, it's usually all cinemas or none. You have to be pretty niche to get a limited release if not just stuck at film festivals. I remember seeing a number of TV spots for Upgrade, I'm sure it was a wide release. But also I'm in Orlando, Florida, so maybe in the Midwest and the further west into mountain country you go, the more select things become, and then you have the West Coast where it's all available again.

@@FullFatVideos Different contracts? American made movies would likely play on all screens here, but foreign films will always be less spread. Even with the similarities between American and British cultures, the movies still have to be imported, so international contracts for certain theaters would apply. At least, that makes sense to me. I'm not looking up any of this to see if I'm right, I'm just running on pure confidence.

In regards to a hypothetical sequel in the STEM half of the story there's the issue of STEM's rationality being effected by human brain and hormone chemistry. Until it completely subvertes Gray it's never had to deal with serotonin overload or the multiple dopamine hits that are a decent breakfast and strong coffee. These wouldn't just be a distraction, they could be crippling to a being that's never had them.

Ok, so this is weird. a few days ago I finished watching Terminator movies, even the bad ones, which led me to grad Terminator Resistance on Steam. Decent game, pay less than $20 for it, it isnt particularly great. Then when I thought my Terminator, and hell Robo Cop adjacent algorithm had run its course, suddenly up comes Full Fat. And it was good. Which seems to be the tread these days on legacy sequels, just when you think its done or dead a new director or creator says or does something that piques your interest again.

@FullFatVideos Ive seen each one individually before but never one after the other. The first 3 still hold up well and I do have a soft spot for Salvation. But man does the quality go down so fast after 3. Which makes Upgrade such a fun movie. It's so refreshing to see a film cross between AI control with a symbiotic relationship and a fucking murderbot. If Terminator did that as a sequel, a chip of Skynets AI trapped in an enhanced humans body, that would be a story to tell. Maybe not a good one, but the bar isnt set very high.
