Hey man I’m 33 and just bought my first truck. Unfortunately I couldn’t afford a brand new ram so I bought a used ram Laramie for 28K, 31 out the door. Overall the ram looked to be in very good condition other than a small dent in the bumper and the bed is used but hey that’s what it’s for. The body is immaculate and it has a truck cover anyway. Anyways I bought it with 99K miles on it which is more than I would had liked. Right off the bat I was told I would get 17 miles city and 20mpg highway but I’m averaging 12.1. I’ve only had it for 2500 miles and so far the first issue I noticed is glitchy media. I’ll hook my iPhone up to the cord and plug it into the truck but it doesn’t always load and sometimes just says media loading for a while. That’s minor. The next is just last week for the first time when I stop at a red light without taking the truck out of drive or touching anything the truck will just rev up when the light turns green and I put my foot on the gas pedal to go just like if I was to put my foot on the pedal with the truck in park and it says place truck in park and then any gear so I put it in park and back to drive then it goes just fine. That’s happened twice. Today I was sitting at the gas pump and all of a sudden I heard a noise which sounded like the fan getting louder and louder so I shut the truck off. I second guessed myself thinking surely nothings wrong… I mean I just paid 30K for this truck so surely not right? I stopped by a friends and pulled up at the end of his driveway and sat there while he stood there talking. He asked me to move up so his girlfriend could back out and leave and when I moved up I told him you smell like antifreeze brother and I heard that sound again being louder and louder. He said shit and asked me to pop the hood and the truck had a little steam under the hood and that’s when we saw all the antifreeze including a trail from where I was parked before to where I moved up to. He shined the flash light and I saw a crack on the radiator on the drivers side of it about two inches from the top where the plastic starts. Have you head of any of these problems before or had any yourself? Do you have any ideas why this would happen? I have a 3 month 3000K mile warranty which doesn’t seem like much of anything but should I give them a call. I know the obvious answer seems like yea man but being this is my first big purchase and worrying that I might want to trade it in sooner or later as soon as I get positive equity (or sooner if it’s going to give me a bunch of problems) then I don’t want to tell them everything and then they depreciate the trucks value based on the issues. Idk what to do or where to start. I hope it’s not a head gasket issue

I have a similar issue where the flange on the exhaust after the cat had both pressed bolts sheered off. Dealer is claiming not covered under warranty, I am going to make damn sure they check the headers which are covered. Anyone heard of cracked exhaust manifolds leading to sheered pressed bolts down the line on the flanges?

My 2011 Ram 1500 Hemi did the same thing. Started with the passenger side then a few months later the drivers side manifold started to leak. Cost around 1,400 to get both done. I think manufacturers do this on purpose to get people into a new one.

And I was only able to hear the noise by driver and passenger side tire, never from top of the motor

I've had to fix this issue twice. I'd buy a new RAM but, these issues are expensive over the life of the truck. And aftermarket warranties tend to have caps after so many repairs or limitations on where you can take them. So, for now, my 16 Sport is staying with me. Good vid. Thanks for sharing.

Good to know about the ram tick. My truck is a 2019 sport with only 25000 miles. Best truck I’ve ever owned. Love the power and handling of this truck. The only issue I have is the sunroof leaks. I have had it into the dealer twice and they have not been able to find it yet. The ram water over it for a couple hours at a time and it hasn’t leaked. Go figure. It does seem to be inconstant. I’ve taken it through car washes and washed it by hand and didn’t leak, but after a rain storm it will sometimes leak. I am worried about the damage it is doing to my truck

I wonder if the cracked manifolds have to do with out the collector and down pipes are mounted to the chassis. If it's to rigid, there is no room for the metal to expand and you get stress cracks. This is common problem on another high end exotic I know of and some enterprising shop came up with a spring mount for the exhaust portion after the collector in lieu of the rigid OEM mount. The cracked header issues disappeared for those that installed the modified mount. This could be a simple fix if Ram would actually look at it.

There's so many possibilities for cracked manifolds fact is they've been cracking for as long as they've been using cast iron why anybody still uses cast iron manifolds is a mystery besides cost, steel tube headers is the answer worst they'll do is blow a gasket or rust out at some point pretty sure there's a heat shield over them so the cracks aren't necessarily visible.

Only if you use shitty bolts, no thread lock, and an aluminum block with iron. Also, they put the bolts in the wrong pattern. All of which is a mechanics fault, not the iron. User issue, not the iron. No one here stated bolt pattern lock. If you put on bolts next to each other like a clock wide pattern or counterclockwise pattern then anything on this pattern will break. Put on any bolts to metal in a hex pattern. Start one end and then second bolt to the opposite end jumping from the rear of the manifold to the back switching sides while applying the bolts in a hexagonal pattern. Tire hub to rim bolts called lug nuts are never applied in a clockwise pattern or counterclockwise. Never tightened a bolt next to the one you just applied. That will warp any metal and isn't how you apply bolts metal to metal. Even sky scapers during the winter may have a failed beam if the bolts or rivets are applied next to each other. They don't teach this in modern classroom environments. Takes doubly the time to apply bolts this way correctly. With thread lock, and add a new thermostat, more air into the engine compartment. Easy as 1-2-3, not 4-6-2-4-1-7. 99.9% of the time, no automaker outside of NASCAR uses this bit hex pattern even all your tire mechanics too. It will crack your wheel hub and rims. Research corvette Rims falling off in half. Completely shredded in half. Because of one thing. Idiot mechanic to save two seconds off his clock added the bolts in a clockwise pattern, not a hexagonal pattern. Metal to metal 100% hex on bolt pattern. The building or engine will fail otherwise even the rim or hub. Many people driving today with cracked wheel rims and Trucks. View KZread Semitruck rim failures. You think I'm joking, space shuttles have failed due to incorrectly adding bolts. Without a hexagonal pattern or thread lock bolt seals. AKA the challenger Space shuttle explosion was due to hexagonal issues between two metals. Back up gasket didn't work! That would be your head gasket. If the bolts are put on circularly beside each other pattern will break any metal, plastic, or glue even a gasket will break due to this idiotic person putting bolts on the wrong way. Most simple thing in the world. Put gasoline or diesel into a tank and the car runs. Add coolant to your gas tank? Get broken shit, mechanics pretending to be mechanics. Like I said, including the challenger explosion was preventative if an actual mechanic was on duty or engineer not drunk beyond comprehension. Every accident is preventable. call your mechanic and tell them how they applied their bolts at your Dodge dealer you got that fix from. Bet you they say who cares dude, I'm on my marijuana break with a beer for sure Mr. dude. Same excuse from the Challenger shuttle Explosion. Idiots at work in the wrong field. I can only imagine if they world EOD in the Army. They would be armless if lucky.

The issue is the bolt pattern application when tightened down. Not metal or part issue. It's a mechanic issue. If they even updated the part. The mechanic 99% of the time is 18 years old with no experience. He'll slap the same bolts on, without a special lb ratchet, or a hex pattern. Any metal will warp and break if bolts are added in a circular fashion instead of a hexagonal fashion. Start to form the from end or back never the middle. Add bolts in a certain pattern always. Even on rims. You add lug nuts in a circular pattern then the rim or hun will crack. Watch you tube semi-truck rim failures. Due to no hexagonal pattern used when applying the bolts. Duh. Something no teacher is teaching mechanics today. Have to talk to a NASCAR mechanic on applying bolts and the importance of bolt sequence applications especially when you have iron clamping down onto an aluminum anything. Bolt pattern is more important than as in this truck. 100% positive the mechanic he used after his marijuana break didn't add the bolts in a hexagonal pattern and did use the same bolts and no thread lock maybe even the same head gaskets. That's how you earn return business! With stoned 18-year-olds replacing engine components. Name one mechanic that is urine tested or sober while on the job? It's unheard of. Bet your ass this Exhaust manifold will fail. Unless you added the bolts per the engine manufacturer's specs and used a torque wrench plus new bolts and thread lock. May get another 100k miles crack-free. No drug pun intended.

Warping, and no tension ratchet used per lbs specified. Or the tightening of the bolt pattern. If you start bolts on the front of back and work up, you'll blow your exhaust manifold in half. Tightened with special Rachet that calculates the lbs per square inch used, and then start the bolts in a hex pattern. Start on one end first with one bolt, then the opposite end for the second bolt. So you tightened the bolts hopping from one end to the other. It's same for putting on lug nuts. You go around in a circle, then your hub may crack or crack off! So any bolts even frame bolts. Never apply the bolts right next to each other in sequence. Always jump from one end to the other. Never side by side tightening or you'll end up cracking both the base of the header and the exhaust manifold. Headers may have coolant running in them. So if you notice white smoke, that's water burning, or it may leak. Whoever pit your exhaust manifold bolts wrong did the whole truck the same way. This is a factory line issue and training issue. never add bolts next to each other that have high tension and heat plus warping. Bolts also need to be replaced and 100% sure they didn't do that! If you replace the bolts with some racing car competition bolts for a couple of extra dollars will save or make your issue worse. With Trucks like this using Aluminum metals with Iron don't mix, ask any welder. Crane operator what I'm saying is true. Metal warps in just five-degree heat of aluminum or less dense metals have higher warping issues. Switching from iron to aluminum adds MPG to your trucks and see all gas savings until the engine blows up or cracks open. Use quality parts other than Mopar or use their racing lineup in your truck. Watch the mechanic also, how he uses the same fucking bolts, the same fucking gasket, and the same fucking stupidity adding the bolts in sequence next to each other, with out thread seal or thread lock applied to the bolts, Manifold will crack again mark my words. This is pre 1940s knowledge no Classroom teaches today. Because they used Iron and steel not some dumb Aluminum metal from the lowest bidder. Give me Philadelphia steel in my Truck, dealer will add 100k to the price tag. No Joke. All parts aren't made in America. Shitty third-world countries. I don't even think bolt pattern or bolt quality will help it at 200k. Bad quality metal, and parts. That's every car today. Not one has quality built into the same reference term called new Truck or car, even semi-trucks. The safety went down the hill. Dodge and other manufacturers call this career stabilization or guarantee return service calls, and repairs. Make more money for the service than selling any cars or trucks, trust me. Tax bill at the end of the year for their assets on the lot suck. When did oil cost more than a gallon of milk? 1984-today. When we relied on Saudi oil, as we rely on Haiti to make Dodge, chevy, and Ford parts. None American made, or from spells disaster. Even Russians use American military gear, tank parts, and space rocket parts are imported to Russia from America. The same goes with Japan's military and might. We export such quality and import shitty everything. In Iraq, they run Dodge, Ford, and Chevy is incorrect. They use Japanese vehicles that aren't allowed here. All Toyotas, Hondas, and whatever aren't made in Japan, nor America. They import the parts from the same people that make Dodge, Ford, and Chevy parts in third world nations for Americans to use, yet at premium coats. Japan makes its own, tools, parts, and quality shit for their vehicles and the world, except America. Tell me this how can a Toyota truck from Iraq last me three years with no oil change, shot up, and no maintenance what so ever in the middle of combat and mortar rounds incoming. Yet, take a Dodge, Chevy, or Ford and it quits the second day or first day in 145-degree weather! Because it's not Japanese sourced or quality parts. Most third world nations import from quality locations, such as Japan for half the cost due to American trade deals from the 1980s. Ever since 1984, a huge amount of car technicians were needed to be retrained on repairing shotty parts. Terrible for America. We should have titanium rods, blocks, headers, and bolts plus exhaust manifolds. Have quality metals used is pulling teeth. My rifle made in America by moms and pops shop Daniels Defense or CZ tech from Kansas city uses these metals and no foul play has happened. Compared to a high point arms made by a third world nation, the worst of a gun manufacturer. Yet, all American vehicles are a high point arms type of quality. Breaks the first time on the range or use is sad. Microfracture must of started in the factory 🏭 after slapping on bolts too tight in a fast clock-wise pattern will crack anything made of metal with much heat. Especially if the engine is aluminum or a mixture of it. Why don't trucks or Cars use quality racing spec metals is to earn your return business. Like with oil in the 1980s. Return business at double the cost or triple is king kong of all business. Dodge guy switches to Chevy, same shit! Switch to a Ford and mark my words the three trucks parts were manufactured in the same factory in Haiti Mexico. When was the last time you can say you ate in those third-world nations without a diarrhea attack 👊? Same goes for the trucks and cars. They are only put together at different locations, yet these parts were born from the same smelter and factory. All shity by people who don't have a high school diploma, nor talk much English when their instructions to pit together these vehicles and make the parts are written in either Russian, Chinese, or English. Makes it hard for us hard-working Americans to trust any vehicle in America if it was made out of country here. Makers know this and don't fix it because like you said, it cost 1-5% of your vehicle to fix it. Do this thirty times and the dealers make more money than what you bought the truck at. Someone down on his bank luck or cheap dude will inherit your truck. They will for thousands of dollars, nearly the cost of a brand new truck, to repair in the future. As long as the crankshaft turns and the wheels are working.

you need to replace the cast-iron headers with a good pair of aluminum heads instead. This will happen again and again. While you still have new bolts in the headers you need to swap them over, because what usually happens is the bolts bread off of the heads and you will have to tap them out. Oh and the reason why they don't replace the castiron heads with the aluminum ones is that they will lose out on making money off you. The headers problem has been a problem scenes the beginning of the 5.7 histories. Even with that problem, I love my truck.

It’s a cast iron part bolted to aluminum heads. When they get hot and cold, they expand and contract, and the aluminum block doesn’t flex in the same way cast iron does.

I'll never buy another Ram. Too many reoccurring problems on the few I've had. Exhaust manifolds, lifter issues, piston slap, etc. Metal on metal noise is always great.
