Man that scene with the rest of the scrapbook and Ellie's message is so perfect. Also very sad when you consider that up to this point, Carl was doing all this, not for an adventure or to honor Ellie, but because he felt like he failed her by never going to Paradise Falls. This was very much an act of atonement, imo, and I think he probably would've just sat in his chair forever like you said had the message not been there. Ellie's message opened his eyes to the fact that she didn't think of their life together as a failure in any sense of the word, she saw it as the most grand adventure and she was happy with all of it. All that to say, I think the change is very sudden, but also very earned when you consider how that little message changed his entire perception of his life.

My family and I grew up with Pixar, but this film in particular is one of my mom’s favorites. She likes to rewatch this particular film every now and then. Paradise Falls is based on the real-life Angel Falls in southeastern Venezuela, which continues to be the tallest uninterrupted waterfall in the world. Ed Asner, the voice behind Carl Fredricksen, has sadly passed away in 2021. Before he passed though, he was able to lend his voice as Carl one last time in the sequel series titled Dug Days.

I think the main reason why Carl and Ellie’s house could POSSIBLY fly is because the chimney just happens to be right in the dead center of the house. Making it far more stable when lifted by the balloons. But given that house is also from the 1920’s or possibly even earlier, I think it’s safe to say it’s one of those buildings that was made to last, especially after Carl and Ellie restored it.

I'm not sure "live your dreams while you can" was the message. It's that even everyday life can be an adventure, if that's what you want to make of it. It's not about the location, it's about the mindset. Carl thought he let Ellie down, but he didn't - they had an amazing life together. *That* was their adventure. Likewise, Ellie gives him permission to have a new adventure, but that isn't about bringing the house to the falls. In fact, Carl didn't even really treat that as an adventure for most of it, he was still being a grumpy old man. It's about finding new relationships, which he does through Russel and Dug, and *living* again, which Carl wasn't doing before.

    1) there’s a Pixar short about other elderly people being inspired by the balloon getaway and trying their own versions. It’s worth a watch. 2) the DVD/BluRay release has an Easter-egg on the main screen. It leads to an explanation that was cut from the original script about how Carl’s older hero is still alive. The reason he wants the bird captured is because the eggs it produces slow the aging process. He had been consuming eggs to the point of driving the bird species to extinction. It contrasts with Carl’s story arc of learning that true immortality comes from passing your wisdom and love onto the next generations.

Your message about moving where you want to really stood out to me. For years i kept telling myself i was gonna move to texas and kept i kept making excuses. But September 24 2023 i finally took that step and it was the best decision i ever made. Life is short, so we gotta make the best of it while we got it

I loved this movie growing up & I was always like how is he gonna get food? But when I grew up and rewatched I realized that was Carl’s last adventure, he was gonna go to Paradise Falls & essentially die where him & his wife always dreamed to go. It breaks my heart but this movie is an example that animation can tell beautiful stories that aren’t meant for kids, they are just movies kids can watch & that’s a totally different difference. I’m so proud of Pixar & how far they have come & they will always be a part of my life. I’m so happy you enjoyed this Alex & I can’t wait to see more of your animated movie reactions. (But I love all the videos, keep up the amazing work you do for us!

About 10 years ago, we went to see Pixar in Concert....basically an orchestra playing the music from Pixar movies as they play the scene the music is from on a screen. They played the music from UP and for the first section with Carl and Ellie, needless to say, they were passing around a box of tissues. Like you said early on, it's amazing how much can be conveyed just through music.

Amazing movie. So, there's an animated short film that went along with this called "Dug's Special Mission" that follows Dug throughout the day up to the point where he meets Carl and Russel, and you find out it was his birthday and he wished for a new master. Warms my heart every time I think about it. lol

I definitely used to be about the camping, but I'm in the UK, so there's far less wilderness and more actual camp sites to go to (where you had hot showers). Over time we graduated from those tiny tents up to ones you could stand up in, and finally one that could literally sleep twelve people while also parking the trailer that carried our gear in the back of it... with a gazebo outside for grilling under in the rain, and wind-breaks for a fence that allowed us to make a parking spot for the car... and the trailer tail had a custom cooking station that we made and installed... It. Was. Glorious.

I've seen several reaction videos to "Up", and I still haven't seen a single one wherein the person watching understood the 'snipe' joke. And to clarify for those who don't get it... there is no such animal as a snipe. They literally are a fake animal, made up as a joke to make non-experienced hunters (among others) look like fools. So, if anyone ever tries to talk you into going out on a Snipe Hunt, they're screwing with you. Carl was trying to keep Russell busy and out of his hair, by giving him a task that was literally impossible while still making think he was 'assisting the elderly'

One reason this movie hits so hard is that as a kid the grandpa seemed angry and unlikable in the beginning but know as we grow up we understand that he just had a hard life and we feel bad for him.

After the divorce, my Mom can't watch those first 10 minutes of up. She still feels like she's a failure for not giving me and my siblings a "proper" childhood. And no amount of us reassuring her helps.

There were some videos going around years back where they were getting some groups of certain 20-ish year old guys - I know one group was soldiers, I assume the rest were similarly "tough, manly" guys - together who had not seen Up, getting them drunk, and then showing them the first 15 minutes of the movie, and filming their reactions. Nothing like watching people's souls get crushed in real time while they're too inebriated to handle it emotionally. :)

Fun fact, this movie is believed to be inspired by a house in Seattle (not to totally sure if it was) that the owner didn’t want to sell to make way for the new buildings so they just started making new tall buildings around it. I think the house is still there but I could be wrong, I also think it’s knows as the Edith Macefield House.

Movie Theory: Carl never woke up that morning. Russel is the angel of death(or Carl and Ellie’s never had child) and the journey is Russel leading Carl into acceptance of the afterlife/resolution of his regrets.

It’s amazing how many don’t realize the connection of sending a Scout on a snipe hunt. We lost many a first year at summer camp to those deadly snipes, they’re vicious creatures. They’re quite reclusive, it could take days of hunting to even have a chance to see one. Here’s some surplus C rats from Vietnam, a couple cans of Spam, a canteen, and a compass. Good luck. If you get lost, find your way back.

For anyone else wondering, they estimated it would take 23.5 million party balloons to lift Carl's 1800 square foot house. In the movie, only 20,622 balloons were rendered for the lift-off sequence and 10,297 for most flying scenes.

12:57 That's actually a bugle, not a trumpet. Trumpets have valves, bugles don't (typically). There is the contrabass bugle that does have valves, because it's just a concert tuba with a bent lead pipe.
