Up-cycling Silk Ties Into Usable Fabric + How To Make A Cushion Cover Using Half-Square Triangles
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Hello again. Today I'm showing you how you can upcycle and process silk ties into usable fabric for projects. In this tutorial, I'll be showing you how to make a cushion cover using half-square triangles. At the end of the video, you can also see the two quilts that were exhibited in 201I8 at the International Festival of Quilts in Birmingham.

Absolutely gorgeous .congratulations here from Argentina Patagonia. Have ties from my father in law you have inspired me❤❤
Thank you so much Eleanor, I really really enjoyed watching you create those gorgeous and beautiful pieces with those amazing and beautiful silk ties. I absolutely love ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ the quilts you show at the end. I’ve subscribed and given you a thumbs up too.
Eleanor, I really enjoyed watching you with your ties. I have only made rugs with mine (polyester) but have saved a boatload of silk ties that I will hopefully get to before I die. Thanks for the inspiration !!!!! ✌🏻♥️
Beautiful quilts you made out of old useless ties. You are the first person to wash the ties and then use in a project. Thank you, I will start looking around the thrift shops for some old ties to craft.
Eleanor, your quilting is absolutely beautiful. I personally love men’s ties and your creative work with them
❤❤❤Beautiful Quilts. I’m about to make Ties into Blanket for my cousin. Thanks 😊
Hello from New Zealand Thank you I am finally confident enough to get started. I am so pleased you did this tutorial I was not going to wash my pieces first but will do so now . Also the interfacing is such a good idea. You know I would have stuffed this up first but now I have seen this i am away .

Hi!! I’m in New Zealand too!!! We are travelling our beautiful country in a very comfortable house bus… this sort of project is perfect!!!
Absolutely fabulous xxxx
Это натуральный шелк. Это приятно к телу. И полезно для кожи.
Charming and meditative, Eleanor. I came because I wanted to get ideas on how to stabilise fabric from my old ties. I loved your technique of tacking the silk to the interfacing first, then turning it over and bonding it properly from the back. Lovely (to see you at) work!
Your cushion cover is gorgeous and so are the quilts you made! I have seen quilts and cushions made from ties, but never anything as beautiful as the ones you have made. You are very talented. Thank you for this lovely tutorial.
Thank you, I have 2 big tubs full of silk ties and you inspired me to finally do something with them. I think I'll save the small, odd-shaped scraps for my Victorian crazy quilting. The lovely calming music is an added bonus to your superior instruction. I also adore your garden, my style exactly. Happy spring, may our creative juices flow !

Absolutely beautiful. ! You did a wonderful lesson, thank you. Please do more videos on ties etc. ❤️
Wow wow WOW 🤩 I’m in awe of your talent and patience. Amazing work!
Thank you so much for such a detailed tutorial! I have a lot of silk scraps and I have been thinking of making a wall hanging piece out of them, but I’ve never quilted in my life. Thanks for the inspiration 😊
Beautiful⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Thank you 🤗
Wonderful video. Thanks so much
A very relaxing and creative video. Well done.
Super!
Ваши работы очень красивые.Спасибо.
Sono super bellissimi brava
Восторг!!!
Very nice!
Thank you Eleanor! Yours is the most satisfying tutorial about recycling (actually reinventing) silk ties I have ever seen. Your neat method of cutting and making half square triangles is the one thing I had been looking for up to now. All the best from "sunny" Italy.

Gorgeous work, love love love the log cabin!
Lovely, lovely, a joy to watch. Thank you!
Beautiful
Great tutorial, very clear instructions. Thank you for sharing :)
Woaw, så beautiful it looks. I have got lots of ties from my brother in polyester and silk. I didn't think I could wash the ties that are made of silk. Now I'm going to wash and sew. Thanks a lot for this video!

I use the polyester ties to make rugs. I reduce and braid three ties together. Make a really long snake of braided ties and then start my shape and sew the rows together. The rugs last for years and if they start to get dirty, just spray them with cleaner, rinse, and leave outside to dry on a fence. ✌🏻♥️

So lovely to see you! I'm amazed as to how much work goes in to prepping the ties before you even start sewing! That colour combo is gorgeous.

Привет из России Я тоже из галстуков люблю создавать интересные вещи, косметички, наволочки, шоперы Только я их сначала стираю, распускаю, они легко распускаются Затем глажу и режу на нужные формы Благодарю вас за видео

This video is very helpful, thank you. My Dad passed away and I'm trying to turn his clothes and silk ties into memory quilts. Now I feel ready to get started on it. Is the quilt able to go through the washing machine when it's all done or will it damage the silk still?
I like as bed spread.

What was the powder you added to the water after you washed and rinsed the ties?
They are beautiful. i especially love the log cabin one. Did you hand quilt it? It looks really fantastic and thanks for sharing the process.
Eleanor, thank you for making the process of getting ties ready to sew so clear. I'm wondering, I have been collecting silk fabric samples for a while now with the goal of using them in a patchwork project. Since these are not things that have been worn, do I need to go through the washing process or would ironing and adding interfacing to the backs of the samples be adequate? Thanks
How do you use the tags that are on the ties (makers tag) in the pillow?
Hello from Canada, love your work! What kind of batting do you use when you make a larger piece? And what kind of backing? I see you are doing big stitch quilting which seems to be the ideal method for holding it all together and adding embellishment.May I ask what kind of thread you use for the hand quilting? Thank you so much.
@eleanorbirchellhughes
Жыл бұрын
Hi Irmgard, I've only just seen your comment, batting for all my hand quilted projects is 80/20 low loft batting - I don't use any particular brand. The thread I use for sashiko quilting or big stitch quilting is cotton Perle no 8, I hope that helps 🙂
What do you use to wash a ties so they will not lose your color
What was that you added to the water for the rinse step? Thank you
What interfacing did you use to stabilize the fabric.
Beutiful

Please, can you tell me what to do with all of the Tie Padding I have accumulated?
@eleanorbirchellhughes
2 жыл бұрын
Good question, I use it to give substance to appliqué, hairbands, and in jewellery making (for necklaces). It can also be used in lapel's on a jacket or coat, collars, anywhere you would normally use a heavy interfacing in dressmaking.
What did you add to your rinse water?
@eleanorbirchellhughes
Жыл бұрын
On the first rinse white vinegar literally just a teaspoon, and to the final rinse a very gentle fabric conditioner.
Did you use silk thread?

А можно было без стирки галстуков? Они ведь не настолько грязные?
