On the big English singles you should have a valve lifter on the exhaust valve, connected to a small pivoted lever on the left side bar, my AJS 500, with an overbore of 125 thousands (1/8 inch) and 13 to 1 compression, would not turnover without it, engage the lifter, prod it over a couple of times, with a flooded carb when it is spinning over easily, release the lifter and she would start into that slow thump of torque. A friends girl asked if she could take it for a ride, saying she could ride his BSA 650, I said if you could start it, go ahead, and we left her there, standing on the kick start lever, I didn't tell her about the lifter!

The mid Ohio sports car road race track complex hosts the largest motorcycle swap meet in the world every year… when I go there, I don’t even make it up and down all of the isles. I don’t believe you could just spend a short time looking at each vendor selling everything from magazines to early 1900s motorcycle parts to leathers to brand new motorcycles, I don’t think you could Just stop and quick scan at each vendor in a single day. It is exhausting. When I go this year, I am taking my grandson’s electric scooter

Nice view at the meet and a lot of nice bikes there too. :) I've got a little tip for you as you seem to like old bikes (60s - 80s) with smaller engines "a bit more" (from 50cc over 125cc to 250cc). I'm from Germany, the eastern part or former GDR (German Democratic Republic / DDR), more exactly. As Germany was seperated after the WW2 into East and West, we in the eastern part had a fairly big "lineup" of bikes. From 50cc mokicks to 250cc 'real motorbikes' we had it all and asspecially in the 50cc region WE had the best mokicks/mopeds for sure.^^ Because we had the two famous comanies of and to craft those, by now maybe not even noticed by bike lovers in the U.S., 2-stroke bikes from the 'Eastern Zone' of Germany back in the days. So, what I want to say is: Try to get ya hand on one of them but in first place on a and enjoy the former East German lifestyle while/when riding one of them!! :D No joke they are really good robust and reliable 50cc funmakers 'Made in DDR' and till today the fastest (!) streetlegal 50cc's you can buy here or maybe even in the whole european country. That's because of an aggreement placed between Germany East and West after the fall of the wall so our 50cc's are aloud to "run up to '60km/h' " by factory. This had to take place because mopeds from the West are only running around 50km/h and after 1998 the (shit) EU commission placed a new order which limited the max. speed of 50cc scooters/mopeds ect. to 45km/h (~ 30mph) by law and that still today. :) You may see why they are very popular over complete Germany and not only the eastern part: they are sheeper than a new scooter, easy to fix, sheep spare parts for ALL models and they are easy to 'tune up' a little. ;P To make a Simon run up to 110km/h whitout going bankrupt is NO big deal as well. (even the cops know that most of them run faster than 60km/h, but at least here in the countryside they don' t care about it, maybe more in big cities like Berlin or Hamburg ^^) Even from factory there was no limit in speed placed by elektronics or s.th. else. So if gotten your new S51 and 'drive in/ride' in the moped properly, you can easy get up to 65 - 70km/h (40 - 45mph). (fun fact: If your standard Simson only runs 60 max, you've probably done s.th. really wrong or you shoul think about riding one... ^^) Take a look on KZread. There are a lot of vids to get ya into 'them'. From showing the bike over restaurating/repairing to "2-stroke tuning" in kinda impressive ways (up to 24hp or in the extreme 42hp are pressed out of the little bangers) down to the customizing part with exrem low down rides, big brake kits and hand made 2stroke exhausts. :D They are "not that sheep" today as they were 30 years back then after the wall falled when you could've gotten one for only a crate of beer. (~ 10€ in todays currency, for 24 bottles á 500ml of beer) For a good S51 it' s possible to pay up to 3000€+ for a restaurated model. And the other ones are no exception for these price tags. They've all become really big cult object of the past times from the cold war, East vs. West and a reunited Germany till today and on. I have 2 for sure. First is a MJ'68 KR51/1 Schwalbe and second 'her' ansistor from the mid/late 80s the SR80/CE. The SR80 is the bigger model of the SR serie were at the base is the SR50. Instead of 50cc's like the normal models, the SR80 has a 70cc engine from factory and runs ~80km/h standard which unables him to be categorised as 'moped' like the rest. It's a quirky kind of 'scooter from the east' with a 4 speed manual transmission in contrast to the automatic scooters of today. It's a unique mix like all bikes/cars of the former GDR.^^ I've pushed up mine to 18hp out of an 85cc big bore complete engine whit stronger 5 speed transmission, disc brake at front, boxy rear swingarm instead of the normal round one, a new ignition which is 'contact less' (called VAPE ignition, a complete harness kit plus new groudplate ect.). Runs quite comfy ~120km/h now. No problems so far and nearly 10k kms new on the clock until now. :p So please remember: What you should get = Simson -> S50/S51, Schwalbe KR51/1 or 2, Habicht, Star, Spatz, Albatros, Duo 4/1 or 2, SR1, SR2, SL1, Sperber, SR50/SR80, AWO (!) Sport/Touren = MZ -> ES, TS, ETZ, BK (2 stroke boxer! ); from 125 up to 250cc (sidecar possible for 250cc's) = EMW (!) -> R 35 (eastern counterpart of the BMW R 35; curious story how and why; sidecar possible) Hope you be lucky to get one somewhere; you'll sure not regret it. :D Greetings from Germany (East ^^ )

@@bullpencycles Hehe, wish ya all the best man! :) Maybe at least nice to know: Spare parts and tuning parts for nearly all Simson and MZ models are still availible. There are a lot left over original parts from factory. Under enthusiast orig. parts for the engines are "ranked higher"; differences in the new 'metal-mix' for cylinders + pistons in reference to the old ones (??) and the 'finish' of endproduct, were it's sometimes possible to find leftovers from the casting -> ridges on the edges from the flow channels of cylinders cause a highter wearout to the piston. But first: that is 'rare' to find and 2nd: all of the buddys I know don't just throw those in out of the box, they're optimising these flow channels themself by using a 'Dremel' to port and smooth that for getting more horsies out of the stuff...^^ We have quite a few which are specialiced in bikes from the former East with parts, equipment and tuning of all kinds (and prices ;p ). Some of them are even producing their own lighter and more stable parts for example frame/chassie parts, crankshafts too. Yes, there are some crasy guys out there in the german wild...^^ If you may need some web addresses in the future just tell me. Most of them are present on YT too, so you can have a good look/first impression of their work/products for your self. :D Have a nice weekend. 👍🤙😁

The big problem with these swap meets is that the sellers get in a day or two before the public does and they get setup by a worker friend while wheeler dealer goes around in golf cart or a motorbike finding all the hobbyist sells and buying their great deal motorcycles then resell them at a marked up price . The public cant get a good deal on a bike . This bring the price up . Most of these bike will not sell . Then when this swap meet over they pack up and go to the next one .

Yes you have some of that. But I tried to sell my Honda for 8 months at my dealership shop, and I had a lot of lookers at the cheap price but no takers. . Consumers believe that if it's at a dealership then it's overpriced and they think they can find one less expensive privately but many do not understand the risk one takes in buying a barn find. I did sell my Honda at the show and it got flipped there twice. Getting them going is rarely as easy as first thought. It's rarely just batteries and carburetors anymore as these bikes age. On top of that we carry insurance and can only sell titled bikes in Florida, no third party titles and other sketchy deals we must avoid. So there's two sides

And you must also look at it internationally. Sometimes what's expensive here is cheap depending on the exchange rate and that drives the price up because of export demand. But today that is backwards since the dollar is strong

@@bullpencycles I am sure the most swap meet sellers are not selling to international buyer at the swap meet . Maybe on line but not at a swap meet . Because as we all know that you dont really know what could be found and what condition to find it at . Not only that it would take time to prepare for shipping . I have sold things on the net to other countries then the cost of all that prep , ground shipping , air flight or over seas shipping . Only the best bikes goes to other countries or a group of high dollar bikes goes over seas . Know one in there right mind will ship a Honda CB350 or 360 back to their country . Maybe a Z1 , or a rare tract bike , maybe a H2 . Not going to happen not at those prices . I sold my Z1 to a fellow in Japan and I didn't get a lot of money out of it just because of the shipping cost even then . If I got what it was worth the buyer would have shelled out 14,000 in total . I sold it for 7 grand and he made the arangments and the cost of shipping and duty . That put it back up to 11,000 . But a lot of these bikes are way way over cost . It always is .

@@bullpencycles I do understand that completely and agree . You have to find a good deal before a dealer does . The problem is that all the dealers go straight to the guy that may have one or two bikes to get rid of and sells them to cheap .

@@jeffmullinix7916 Well yes. "Most swap meet sellers are not selling to international buyers at a swap meet", but I also use the swap meet as advertisements with stuff that I know will not sell there, but the word gets around, and they contact me later on. Yes, you have flippers. They flipped some of my bikes. That Honda and even the little Harley got flipped to dealers, but also there are some bikes there that are meant to draw attention, and yes, I know many international buyers that fill their own containers full of project bikes and even junk for overseas, whatever they do with them, they do the prepping. but I am not in that game. They do buy most anything, but some are for collections while others are for overseas buyers or parted out there.. So you do have to look at the larger picture. Nice Z1s and H2 are easy bring 15K and that makes the prices high for the best stuff. Flippers know that.. And yes, "dealers go straight to the guy that may have one or two bikes to get rid of and sells them too cheap" you have that too. The vultures circle as we unload all the time. So, it's a mixed bag but its not one or the other, methinks. I thought there was stuff to buy, and I did, but I only buy what I like anyway. I like and enjoy them all.

A title is a certificate of ownership, proof of ownership issued by each state. Each state has different rules, some harder some easier. I did a video on Florida rules. Look for my video about Vermont titles and Florida on this channel, if you really want to learn more about state rules. Some states don't actually issue titles but most do.
