Unusual visitor at Wildlife Aid

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

We’ve seen a lot of different species pass through the doors over the years, but this is something we’ve only seen three times in over thirty years!
This incredible bird is a European eagle owl, and was brought into us after being found grounded in a field. Eagle owls are not native species here in the UK, and so the hunt was on to find out where it came from!

    What i know from an eagle rehaber and keeper of predatory birds, they have a horrifying low survival rate in their first two years of life, especially now that most wild areas are somewhat compromised by humans. Its not easy but they can live wonderfully in captivity if cared for properly. But just as an odds game if the bird was left in the wild, the odds of it having survived into adulthood are extremely low. By no means is this a reason to kidnap wildlife but it does mean lots of animals survive that wouldn’t otherwise.

  • @enigel1969

    @enigel1969

    Жыл бұрын

    @@FioreCiliegia i don’t know enough about this, so I definitely trust you that most probably the caged bird would have had bad odds to survive to adulthood in the wild. However, I have a mental block when it comes to calling life in a cage a success. Honestly, if I myself had a choice between letting an animal die and keeping it in a cage *for the rest of its live* I would not see death as the worst option. I guess that’s one of those open-ended questions, what is life worth living and who has the right to decide.

    hunting with birds is an old practice, owls included though they aren't a favorite (really not smart birds) legal requirements means bird has a nice big aviary at home that it can fly around though, regular meals and a fairly temperature stable roost to sleep in. Bird ain't slumming it by bird standards.

    Fun fact: Eagle Owl is called "huuhkaja" in Finnish. Our football team is also called "Huuhkajat" after one eagle owl (later named Bubi) decided to hang out on football stadium during a football match in 2007 and we won the match. He is our (un)official mascot now.

    I recently rescued a zebra finch from our front yard. It's definitely an escaped or released pet, because for one we don't find those in the wild where we live, and when I walked up to it it hopped right onto my shoe. Took it inside and to an old bird cage we have, little guy flew right in and got on a perch. While he/she is with us I'm calling it Beeps because it sounds like a little beeping car.

I have a pet lovebird, a lot of the times when birds go missing they die of sickness or starve to death, before anyone can find it, does the finch have a tag around its leg? sometimes breeders need to put tags on the birds, these tags have stuff like the breeders name, the year it was hatched, and the birds ID,

    Finally, I recognise here an owl that I saw sitting on my shed about 15 years ago. It was only the once, and never returned. I was a bit concerned when Simon mentioned 'rings' on its feet, indicating that this one was a captive bird escaped (beginning to think that the owl on my shed might have been an escapee too). On looking it up online, I'm pleased to find I was indeed lucky to have had this species visit my garden (in Scotland) after all, since they do occur in the wild on occasion but are a rarity. From the video, you don't get a real sense of just how large these birds really are, and the eyes are a very piercing, bright orange. A very impressive species.

    You would be surprised at the lifespan of birds. In the wild, Ravens can live 20-30yrs but if well cared for in captivity, they can live up to 60+ i believe. Macaws i know for a fact can live as long as a hooman too. The smart birds that are equal to or smarter than a child are definitely just as important as a child, you have to be sure you can give them a home and love them unconditionally *for your whole life* However with birds, the latter is no problem 🦅💙

    There is a great youtuber who has an Eagle Owl. The females are very big, especially from the north. The Eagle Owl here should've been wearing a Jess which is just like a dog's collar and is very comfortable. I do think it's a possibility he slipped out but thank goodness his tag was still on so his human could find him. If you're interested in seeing what an Eagle owl does you should look up "Yoll" and she will pop up. Her human also has two little owls, a boreal owl, and a variety of reptiles, amphibians, as well as a spider. Nike's purpose for her KZread is to educate people as to why you don't want an Eagle owl and works at the airport with a goshawk to keep away small birds.

    With most birds of prey* it's the size, females are larger. So, I think this might be a he because they can have a wingspan of just under 2 metres (180 centimetres to be exact but there's a few larger ones) and this one seemed to be quite a bit smaller. After watching further, the owner referred to him as an he so seems like my guess was correct. *raptors, eagles and owls I checked but I'm not sure about others, though I think it's the case there as well.
