As an ex PIA employee I believe Mr. Shabbar has understood PIA more than anyone else i have known. He has nailed it to the point that its a policy failure (lack of will by the govt to create a policy thats state friendly) & many such comments especially the one with its not the fault of employees. Good work thank you. In my 13 years of service as pilot for PIA the only thing observed was inaction by the governments whenever there was time to do something productive. It was almost timed correctly to self destruct PIA by helping foreign airlines & by giving them additional freedom to operate in & out of Pakistan. Moreover, his comments about hatred against Karachi is accurate and i always felt more racism in Pakistan than anywhere else in the world. We basically can’t work together. Thats a major problem. Liking & disliking based on provincial & cultural background. PIA was great in the old days when Karachi was a great HUB for all major airlines in the world until long range jets started doing direct flights in between EU & the far east thus a slow growth until the mid 90’s after when the loses started. That was the time when gulf airlines kicked off & sucked PIA out even further until our PCAA (under defence) allowed additional policies to help the gulf airlines grow. Then came PPP government with Zardari. This is the time when further damage was done by killing PIA’s supply chain leading to shortages of parts. This lead to buying parts from then onwards on AOG (aircraft on ground) basis. There again a lack of continuity in effective policies that protect PIA. Rather only helped destroy it further to the point no one wants it anymore. Good luck to PMLN who always tried eradicating the problem rather than fixing it.

The problem is simple yet can never be solved. The Pakistani Army has big business interests in Pakistan. They will not give a free hand to the persons you named as there will be a collision of interest. Zaidi saheb in this interview has hinted this matter. He refers to it when he talks about the steel mill. The Army imports hugely from China and sell it in Pakistan. It is converting all arable lands into profitable housing projects. Pakistan was made for the Elites and if you are an Elite there is no better place to live in than Pakistan. You don't have to pay taxes and you can live virtually like a king. The Elites are hell corrupt and the only things that have saved their skins are India hatred, Kashmir and some potent dose of religious touch. For a poor man the only dream of becoming an Elite is to join the Army and reach to the higher echelons. Once he reached that rung, he starts to oppress and suppress. The Army has thus become the gateway to become the Elite. The low paid soldiers are not Elite though. To become Elite you need to climb to higher posts. There is no meritocracy for these higher posts. Here are the names of Pakistan's finest Economists: Uzair is a Gujarati Vohra muslim (originally from the state of India's Gujarat), Atif Miyan is a Qadiani and Zaidi is a Shia immigrant muslim from India. Atif is a fantastic scholar and Imran Khan brought him to his cabinet. He has thrown out soon enough. His only fault was that he was a Qadiani. Pakistanis could even tolerate Jews but not Qadianis. Merit is not a criteria in Pakistan but religious identity is. Have you heard the name of General Akhtar Rehman Malik ? Do you know the reason why General Malik was replaced by Yahya Khan in 1965 war? Have you read the letter of Gen Malik's son? Have you heard the name of Abdus Salam? Abdus Salam, who won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1979. Do you know what happened to the grave of Pakistan's only nobel prize winner? He was a Qadiani too.

A very accurate assessment of why pakistan is a failed state, and why it will not recover. The system is all set for failure. I always admired his brilliance he topped in matric and Intermediate exams from Karachi board. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over-Pakistans' case, we don't need finance ministers or highly paid Harvard grads if policies are governed by incompetent politicians and not by professionals in their field--Jeeya Bhutto-Shareefs and the establishment let common men and the country go to ..crap
