Unsuk Chin - Cello Concerto (2006-8/2013)

Музыка

Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra
Alban Gerchardt (cello)
Myung-whun Chung (conductor)
Deutsche Grammophon 06.2014
Cello Concerto of 2008/9, revised 2013
Unsuk Chin's Cello Concerto was written for cellist Alban Gerhardt, and premiered at the BBC Proms. The revised version of the work was commissioned by the Bayerisches Staatsorchester and the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. Again in four movements, it starts from nothing, just a single held note from the cello. From this the cellist's line develops into a singing cantilena in dialogue with the orchestra.
The solo writing pushes the cellist - the superb Alban Gerhardt - to the limits of the possible, while constantly reassessing the way it and the orchestra respond to each other.

My god she's good!! She has a distinctive voice. The music flows with a forward momentum lacking in much non-tonal music. Her music doesn't require any extra-musical explanation. As soon as you have to explain music it loses its validity. Bits remind me of the Lutoslawski concerto. He is my favourite composer but is beginning to be pushed to number 2 by Unsuk Chin. Absolutely wonderful.

However the spirit is still there, waiting to be recognized and conscious again and again until it is everywhere in elevation to the Paradise of Utopians and other unconscious dreamers!

Can someone help me to understand the modern composers? This is a great example of something that I don't understand thus not enjoy listening to.

Explanation? Many of them are just horrible. We are in a deep ditch these days as far as classical music is concerned. I'd rather be listening to classical Chinese music of a previous era anyday instead of listening to this.

There is no particular reason to like it unless you like similar things - if your current taste is say Dvorak and Elgar cello concertos then I would trying Shostakovich cello concerto and Kodaly solo cello sonata before moving on to say Dutilleux cello concerto and perhaps some Lutoslawski or the Ligeti Piano concerto before listening to this. Also most composers and their works are forgotten about in the long term. As to the other replies here: Tony , Unsuk Chin is Korean not Chinese. Julius: this might be complicated music but it is not really dissonant - not compared with a lot of very popular rock music. Musical taste is virtually all cultural not something innate that is based on your up bringing and in the modern world your own personal choices

From the viewpoint of a composer, what I see many times is that people forget that contemporary music is a completely different musical language than what we usually know. In fact, it's a plethora of many different musical languages. What usually works in terms of approaching it as a new listener, is to avoid having any expectations and not trying too hard to understand everything. Some tips that may help understand a piece: •Think about what you like and don't like about the piece and why. Practically an internal discussion. •Many times you can find information about the composer and the piece that explain why the piece was written the way it was. •Assuming you can read music, having a look at the score can usually tell about the composer's choice of aesthetics and thought process. Most important thing though, if you really don't connect to the piece, that's completely okay. I think many composers would actually be happy you at least made the effort of giving their music a chance before deciding it's not for you. And who knows, maybe after some time your opinion will change :)
