    Thanks for posting. I like to use a small pry bar to lift the door gently as I turn the screw to raise the door. It take the weight off the assembly, and lessens the chance of stripping the screw head because you need to twist much harder when it has weight on it. :-)

  • @rpprevost

    One of your viewers left this comment: "I love your direction for the adjusting screw. Rather than trying to remember which way does what you simply say to try one way, and if that does not work try the the other way. Perfect?" If anyone does it that way, be very careful. Here's why . . . If you turn a screw and nothing happens, does it mean you've turned it the right direction, the wrong direction, or does it mean you haven't turned it far enough in any direction? Don't leave it to chance. Make sure you turn it the correct direction. If you're turning the screw clockwise, the wheels will extend causing the door to move upwards. Eventually, it will reach a point when you can no longer turn the screw. If you turn the screw counter-clockwise, the wheels will retract causing the door to move downwards until the door is resting on the bottom track. At that point, the screw will continue to turn but you will see no movement of the door. If you continue to turn, the screw will not stop and eventually you will hear the noise of the retaining nut fall off inside the frame and the screw will pull completely out of the frame. Then, you're really screwed!

    Ok. I had a problem with my sliding door. Everything worked perfectly then one day it wouldn’t slide at all. At the end of the door underneath it in the track was that retaining nut. Do I need a new door now? Is there any way to open the door frame? It doesn’t look like it is even possible!

  • @rpprevost

    @rpprevost

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Rockshredder Most often you will see a second screw sticking out of the side of the door frame, or it'll be recessed slightly. Losen that screw and one of two things will happen. Either the entire roller mechanism will fall out of the hole where normally only the roller protrude, or the entire bottom section of the frame will come off. Either way, you "should" be able to install that retaining nut and re-attach it to the door. If you plan to do this, go the extra mile and inspect the rollers for wear and tear, because if they need replacing, now would be the time to do it.

  • @Rockshredder

  • @Rockshredder

    @Rockshredder

    @@rpprevost I took off all the screws on the outside of the door. It didn't open up. What I found is the wheels could be moved around as they slid everywhere at the bottom of the panel. I had to take a screw driver (or even a pen would work) and move the wheels to where they belonged. I knew where they belonged because the screw hole would line up with the wheel assembly. I screwed it down then did the same to the other side. I don't know what the nut did as the screws are similar to wood screws but the door is working better. Hopefully I can make some fine adjustments with the bottom screws but it is fine for the moment.

    For 2 years I have lived in this apt. I have a very large beautiful balcony, but anytime I opened my sliding door it was so loud every neighbor complained so I limited my balcony use then I came across this video. Not only was there concrete on my track! Which I scraped off then cleaned and adjusted the wheel. Now that door is so dam quiet I was stunned. So thank you very much. And yes we have maintenance people but they all got fired and the new guys never come to fix anything. Anyone got a video of how to repair the hot water leak in my bathtub faucet?

    Another clear, simple and especially helpful video Leah! I’ve seen lots of videos about adjusting wheel height, but nothing on fixing a door that rubs on the side of the track. On mine, the door slides about halfway open before the gap between the frame and the side of the rail closes. From there on, it’s rubbing. It’s as if the part the rollers ride on is not parallel with the side of the rail.

    You probably need new rollers & possibly a new track. If the rollers are not adjusting anymore, they, or the cartridge is worn out. With heavy doors the cartridges sometimes have a groove worn in the adjustment guide slots, making them non-adjustable. If the track is still good, replace the rollers as soon as you can before the door starts dragging on the track, causing flat spots and then it will require replacement.

    These are all good, common-sense tips, and I will add one more: If the door just won't budge, find a tall strong person who can lift it *very slightly* out of its track. When my T.S.P. did this, I spotted a *penny* in the track, which had been blocking the door. How it got there, I haven't a clue....

    I fixed my sliding door last summer. Fixing stuff takes some detective work. Would not slide easy. Look at wheels. They had rusted stiff so they needed replacing. It DOES feel good to accomplish something on one's own!

    Sugestion from pet owner. No not use WD40 or similar lubricants unless you like cleaning up dog barf. I use Pam cooking spay. It smells better and works great but doesn't seem to last very long - you have to respray every 2 or 3 months.

    This didn't fix my problem. Does that mean I have a busted wheel? Will I have to remove the door at this point?

    This popped up because I watched other videos for fixing sliding glass doors. I actually had to replace the rollers on mine. One was totally ceased up. The other didn't move well. I probably could have cleaned them up to make them work, but you could see the damage on the ceased up one. (cost less than $20 from Home Depot) If the door still doesn't move well after cleaning the frame and oiling the rollers(only the rollers), you probably need to replace the rollers. You don't oil the frame of a Garage door, why would you oil the frame of a sliding glass door? Just oil the rollers.

    Leah, I found a lubricant called Fluid Film. This stuff is bad to the BONE! I am in Mississippi. Not sure if they sell it where you are but keep your eyes peeled and grab a can

    search for "fluid film". It shows that Lowes, Home Depot and wal-mart along with many others offer fluid film.

    The lower hole for the door in the video is to actually remove the wheels in the event that they're broken and need to be replaced.
