The Namita Sunita murder incident, also known as the "नमिता सुनिता हत्याकाण्ड" in Nepali, occurred in 1980 in Pokhara, Nepal. It involves the controversial and unsolved rape and murder of three girls: Namita Bhandari, Sunita Bhandari, and Neera Parajuli. The incident took place near the Seti river bank, with a single witness named Churamani Adhikari, who later committed suicide according to official reports.
During the summer of 1980, sisters Namita and Sunita Bhandari, along with their relative Neera Parajuli, Pokhara during their school holidays. Nearby, there was a Nepal Army camp situated on the east side of the Mahendra bridge. As the girls arrived at the river bank, a group of boys nearby began teasing them, which escalated into hostility. Allegedly, the girls were then raped and murdered by this group of boys, who subsequently disposed of their bodies in the Seti river.
Many High profile personalities like Actor Nir Shah, Dhirendra Sha, Uday Shamsher Rana, Binod Shanker Shrestha were accused for the crime without any sufficient evidence and the case still remains one of the most mysterious unsolved crime in Nepal.
In June 2001, a significant event occurred when King Birendra and his family were massacred, resulting in Gyanendra becoming the new king. Suspicion arose surrounding the Namita Sunita murder incident when the police were instructed to close the case merely ten days after Gyanendra's ascension. Ultimately, the case was inconclusively closed in 2003, leaving it unsolved.
