UNSEEN PHOTOS: Pedro Lamy Horror Crash Silverstone 1994 Lotus 107 Test

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

**DESCRIPTION**
He was between Abbey Curve and Bridge when the rear wing snapped off at 150mph.
The car became airborne and cleared the Armco, then hit a 6" RSJ that was holding the spectator fence: this ripped the front wing off and the front of the nose.
The chassis was sheared in 2 around where the wing mirrors mount; all 4 corners were ripped off the car.
The crash also ripped the engine and gearbox off the chassis, though part of the engine was still attached to the tub on the top L/H engine mount.
The fuel system was also fractured, so the remainder of the car, with Pedro still strapped in, caught fire.
The car was tossed along a walkway and into a spectator tunnel; If it had been a GP weekend, that tunnel would have been full of people.
Lamy broke both kneecaps and a thigh and sat on the sidelines for over a year.

As Johnny Herbert said, they found nothing but pieces of the car around everywhere. But no sign of Pedro until he and a marshall went into the pedestrian tunnel. And then Herbert admitted he could not believe that Lamy was alive. 'He was unconsious but gradually came to, breathing with pain. At first i didn't want to go into the wreackege but i had to. I feared the worst after what's happened recently'.

I've always heard it was bad, but I didn't realise it was THIS bad This might have been F1's Tony Renna moment. Had it happened on race day, the sport would've likely been in big, big trouble.

If it happened at that year's British GP right after Imola, I imagine it could've been the end of F1 entirely.

@@riverdelta7052 F1 was struggling a lot in the mid 90s, and competing against CART from USA. Already before 1994 Senna and a couple drivers were complaining about safety, Imola too and had they had a third death F1 would have had a lot of trouble and probably a huge wake up call. They did do a lot of learning and by the end of the decade things did look better. By 2003 and the HANS device, F1 was safe as ever and the sport reached peak safety

Grazie Sacha, sei uno dei miei miti ;-). Molto strano il fatto che le foto del crash siano state pubblicate solo qualche settimana fa.... solitamente questo accade per incidenti fatali. On the contrary, I always regret the poor quality (x today's standards) of my videos. Unfortunately I can't do better, I'm a digital troglodyte., I'm sorry. I remember at the time (but I could be wrong) that the Lotus wreckage was seized ... maybe the problems arise from there. It was spoken of as one of the most spectacular and devastating incidents of the time.

The only thing that saved him was the gradual loss of energy as each stage of the crash unfolded. At each impact the car carried on whilst shedding various parts which gradually reduced the energy of the crash. Very, very lucky.

If Pedro wasn't religious before this, surely he was after this because even i, an athiest, thinks some higher power kept him alive after this. Holy hell!! FIA's kneejerk changes to the cars caused this. The changes caused his rear wing to fail. Lotus should've sued. Pedro too.

YES!!!! The season of '94 was just horrible for the drivers. The cars were way too fast and they were flying off the fucking track. At Imola, Rubens Barrichello flew off at a corner airborne and smashed into a tire barrier and almost got killed. Rolland Ratzenberger got killed even though he gave the car too much power into a chicane but the cars were very hard to controll. Sennas accident is still in dispute over the actual cause and another driver (I forget who) almost got killed at Monaco crashing into a tyre barrier somewhere before or after the tunnel I think. It was the worst year by far and I trailed away from watching F1 after that.
