Unplanned Seal Rescue

Naude from Ocean Conservation was out alone at Pelican Point when he came across this seal pup with a bad entanglement. He was not actually on an entanglement patrol at all. The female seals at Cape Cross have started giving birth to healthy young pups, and for the first 3 weeks of life the pups cannot swim. For this reason OCN does very few rescues at this time of the year - in order to not disturb the colonies at this crucial time.
Naude was out counting pups and just doing a general beach survey when came across this young female. She was lying in a detached group of seals about 4 km away from the main colony, and luckily there were no newborns in this group, so he could attempt a rescue.
He snuck up on the group for about 5 minutes really slowly, and then managed to secure her in the net before she could reach the ocean.
The little pup had a very deep cut around her neck, inflicted by a thin piece of fishing line - luckily the wound seemed to be very clean with no real sign of infection. This is a great sign that she will make a swift, full recovery. 🦭

It seems to me a tad more realistic to think that it's relief from a powerful potential predator instead of joy, from their point of view. But regardless, it's a lot of fun to watch. What intrigues me are the videos about the ones (mostly pups) who hang around the team out of curiosity either after or during the rescue. Mammals seem to be inherently curious critters.

I want to talk to people about this problem I have been following this channel & others for decades I fell in love when I started Scuba Diving 25 years ago fact is I can't go until I purchase new gear as my gear belongs in a museum, I need a new tank, & my logbook looks like a Tom Clancy novel. I think it might be very helpful if you had a dive team in the water like the kayak, but I'm sure there are several rescue groups, scientists & students to get the seals in danger & tangled up in lines. Also, possibly a meet & greet with the fishing ships, trawlers fisherman & those that are the source of the lines, break bread with the people who created the issue as they can FIX it as well, sail a few knots in their trawlers diplomacy is critical, make them part of the solution give them the ability to contact you if they see something or can help a seal hold on to it for your organization while you go there to help never threaten them tell them "if something happens such as seals getting caught on hooks, call us we will rush out to help". I know this sounds morbid but give them the dead seal pups the aborted fetuses along with the bodies of the seals who died from entanglements in the very same lines & hooks they use RELAX there is an excellent reason WHY as those little innocent big-eyed babies WILL impact them then the questions will start to flow, that is when you change hearts & minds, that's when the impact of their actions creeps into their subconscious it's critical they come to this conclusion naturally & on their own ist why you need to have them engaged. they know the fishing areas & have amazing ideals from a totally different perspective. Seal PR & EDUCATION programs! Teach the "Next Generation" of children about everything including the numbers of seal pups dead due to starvation entanglement, these children are the next generation of fishermen, many are the children of those same fishermen who due to ignorance are currently causing part of the issue, so you NEVER under any circumstance demonize them as they might be the children of those very fishermen, who have questions for their parents & who often pass on that knowledge to their parent educating them through the education they learned I want to share a story about seals & sea lions who live EAT breed & migrate down our entire coastline & how we created a symbiotic relationship that turned to unconditional love for seals & sea lions this was done through education. Then the People of California got creative by declaring their feeding grounds, breeding grounds, the beaches they adore basically the entire Coast became a Federally protected "National Seashore" granting FULL coastal protection. Jul 16, 2020, · Point Reyes has the largest population of harbor seals in California, excluding the Channel Islands, with twenty percent of the state's harbor seals living or breeding within the park's boundaries. Select colonies at Point Reyes have been monitored since 1976, and have increased as the population has recovered with protection provided by the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. I watch as the horrors make themselves evident in the light of day on the beaches of Namibia aborted fetuses & dead babies seals litter the beaches. Those images have deeply impacted me, but I wanted to offer a glimpse of what it CAN be like, currently, the California Seals & Sea Lions are currently having a massive population explosion, fat seals everywhere, along with babies babies babies. Some have said this population explosion will greatly impact the environment, YES it will but this is nature this is what has been going on for millions of years without humans also t his "population explosion" is really just a reset after the 2008 decline California sea lions have fully rebounded under the protection of the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), with their population on the West Coast reaching carrying capacity in 2008 before unusually warm ocean conditions reduced their numbers, according to the first comprehensive population assessment of the species. It's not all love & rainbows, some believe that the occupation of the mainland by seals and sea lions is not natural. Historically, we had grizzly bears, wolves, and other predators on the mainland that harassed seals and sea lions. These animals were forced to occupy offshore islands and wash rocks, keeping their populations in check. The Marine Mammal Protection Act has had the effect of altering marine ecology by allowing these animals access to mainland beaches, docks, parking lots, and even freeways. The situation has been out of control for a long time. Sea lions can also be found in rivers far inland, foraging on salmon. So there are many mountains to climb & battle to be fought in my honest opinion its Nature that's MUST stay in charge NOT humans PS What happened to those natural predators? The gray wolf (Canis lupus), a native Washington species, was nearly eradicated from the state in the early 1900s. It is now returning to Washington on its own, dispersing from populations in nearby states and provinces--wolves were never reintroduced to Washington. The decimation of the North Cascades grizzly bear population continued for more than a century with commercial trapping, habitat loss, and unregulated hunting the leading causes of death. The last grizzly bear to be killed in the North Cascades of Washington was in 1967 in Fisher Creek (in what is now North Cascades National Park). What upsets me the most about such comments is that it is STILL HAPPENING while they complain about there being No Natural Predators to this day they continue to KILL COASTAL BEARS who are those SAME natural predators here is an OFFICIAL document of the best places to KILL THEM! The hypocrisy is upsetting! Covering bear country in the coastal waterways of the Northwest by boat is a proven method to locating bears for a spot and stalk hunt along the coast. The coasts of the Pacific Northwest from California, north to Oregon and Washington, all the way to British Columbia and into Alaska are prime black bear hunting grounds. So you want to do what has already been proved to cause massive extinction why I say if you do NOT learn from history & TEACH your children that history you are doomed to relive the lesson sadly extinction came before knowledge Oh my this is long I apologize I tend to research a bit I mean WOW you have a world of information at our fingertips watching the suffering impacting me, I hope maybe just maybe my research can be of some guidance to you & the others There IS hope & a way to live alongside our fellow beings in peace & harmony. (unless your a clam because clams are just stupid LOL)

if you wouldnt carry a camera in your mouth, you wouldnt be so out of breath and breathing heavily and thus the seals would be less scared. you know, your breathing sounds like you're about to want to eat them, kinda. just an idea.

@@OceanConservationNamibia Would like to know...what type of saltwater fishing uses line? Is all of this tangled line ,that you find around necks, from recreational/sport fishing? Do the commercial fishing boats use nets? Or is this line from trawlers? We all need the education that you can provide. Thank you for information.
