@@therealestg9 one could argue the Soviets and Nazis would have gained more by not going to war with each other. But this argument fundamentally ignores who the Soviets and Nazis were and what they believed. The Chinese Communists believe in expansionist foreign policy and so does Russia to a lesser extent. They both want Outer Manchuria and they cannot both have it.

@@DeclinedMercy True, but the reality is that China are Russia are already on friendly terms officially, and have already cooperated a lot over the past decade. However, in your example of Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany, there was extreme distrust and outright ideological enmity between the two. For example, Hitler used the Russian Revolution and the violence associated with it to portray what would happen if Communists came to power in Germany. The reason he attacked the Soviet Union in the first place was because he was so anti Communist. So, I don't see anywhere near the same level of antagonism currently between China and Russia.

@@therealestg9 Mainland Chinese Nationalists believe in restoring all territories lost by the Qing and ROC governments. This is a goal that does not allow for peaceful coexistence. I present to you China's incursion into Ladakh, against another nuclear armed state, the violation of the Hong Kong handover treaty, Chinese aggression in the South China Sea and the increasing hostility towards Taiwan as proof that Chicoms are not rational and will focus on expansion at any cost, nuclear armed enemies be damned. I present to you the Phillipines as evidence that China's appetite for expansionism is so great that they will prioritize it even over making long term geopolitical alliances that they desperately need even when they're being handed them on a golden plate. Russia took advantage of the Opium Wars to threaten China when it could not defend itself and take Outer Manchuria for itself. This is a transgression that Chinese expansionists will simply not ignore. Aside from Mongolia, which they probably also have their sights on, it is by far the largest territory China lost and it is the highest priority for Chinese expansionism if not the most urgent one.

The scale of the two problems is vastly different and as such cooperation with Russia against the USA is not going to be denied but rather happily accepted.

As a person from Russia, I will tell you that this moment also surprised me. As the standard of living in China increased, the Chinese, on the contrary, began to get out of Russia. On the other hand, the influence of Chinese business is growing. But the demographic pressure of China, even in the Far East, is much less than the pressure from Central Asia. And for the last 15 years it has been decreasing. In 2019, less than 100 (not thousands, but just 100) Chinese received Russian citizenship. And only 700 Chinese have received a residence permit. It's funny, but in Russia more Americans are getting citizenship and residence permit. There are a lot of Chinese. But it is not clear where, with such a dynamic, they will be able to settle 10 million people in the Russian Far East. Their northern provinces are shrinking due to the outflow to the south of China and low fertility. What should force the Chinese to travel in the millions to Russia if they leave their territories with a more favorable climate?

@@obligatoryusername7239 Which is my point. Hyper-sonic warheads ONLY make sense if you're going to stab the other guy with atomics straight off the bat. They make absolutely ZERO sense versus America. Hypersonic technology is inherently range limited. That's why America was the last of the three to take it seriously as a strategic asset. Right now the Pentagon is merely mirroring Beijing and Moscow. By investing LARGE in hyper-sonic warheads, both nations are telling the world that they don't accept M.A.D. doctrine at all. Hypersonics DEMAND first use doctrine. As a second strike weapon one wonders if they can work at all.

Russia's greatest military advantage is that most of their territory is nearly impossible for humans to inhabit year-round without the assistance of modern technology. Basically, imagine if we could drive trucks to the Moon to mine it for resources, then drive home again before we freeze to death, instead of needing outrageously expensive rockets for that purpose; that is what Russia can do with Siberia.
