As an Asian kid growing up, I received intelligence praise and a lot of pressure. I’m named after two doctors. Therefore, I stopped applying effort because I was labeled “smart.” When I started failing, my ego shattered and I embraced a heavy learned helplessness. Can you do a video on the praise for intelligence vs praise for effort? Too many parents naively praise intelligence

I have been struggling with motivation lately, and I've been a straight A student since literally elementary school, so this has been tough. thank you for this advice!
Motivation is the WHY, discipline is the HOW.
I gave an important exam few days ago which I worked really hard for and it went really bad... I had a burnout and decided to rest for some days but that rest turned into a slump and my another important exam is less than a month away... it was so hard to get out of that slump but then i watched this video and I'll quote your words "Everyday, every hour and every minute that I delay, I make myself less likely to give what I want to those I love" and paste this on my study wall to keep myself going. Thank you so much! i genuinely mean it
im in my first year of uni and I've been feeling so demotivated. subjects were way harder than they were in hs, and as someone who was always top of the class, it was an eye-opener. your videos help!
' every hour, every minute tha i delay i make myself less likely to give what I want to those I love' an eye opener thank you amy!
I appreciate you and your parents so much ❤️ Thank you for this beautiful video!
I really appreciate how you were open and honest about your background and the sacrifices your parents made. I have a similar story and I have been taking things for granted so far!! This is exactly what I needed! Thank you so much for this reminder!!❤❤
You are a very brilliant woman, Amy! Thank you for this video. We truly appreciate it. ❤
I just want to thank you. You are definitely one of the best KZread channels I have discovered.
the tiny laugh in the end was cute lmao. Thanks for the video girl! it's actually true that it's important to develop good habits and aura for when we are still in our not-so-adult teen phase because when we grow up and when We are out there on our own and figuring out our life, it won't be easy to be able to sustain without the good habits.
I am so glad i stumbled upon your channel. You truly made me realise that i want to achive something without knowing why i want the result so bad. Thank you so much, now i know what i have been doing wrong and now i know were to start fixing❤
i technically already knew all of this within myself, but still needed a reminder, thank you! also props to your parents for raising you well, it clearly shows :D you seem like a very nice person

I can relate a lot to what you said at 5:25 . My dad has an excellent knowledge in math, so if I was struggling with a problem he would spend HIS time studying and going through it with me. I am driven by the sacrifices my parents made for me, so I want to make them proud.
thank you for this! since the pandemic started i have been struggling so hard to get to who i was back then... i was an achiever and like you it was my identity as i always get high grades and always do my best in everything i do,,, but when i got to college it's like i got tired and forgot my drive, i always knew that something is wrong but i can't figure out how to fix it. Thank you for this video because i think i heard what i needed to hear especially now that i'm already graduating and had continuous failing grades, it's been really hard and demotivating but i'll push through it's not too late
found a sister !! . i have no sister but today i felt like you are my elder sister guiding me . thanku so much love you infinity 🥺💖💖
Yesterday I had a statistics exam that went horrible, my motivation to study for my next exam was very low. I forgot why I was even doing all of this. But then I came across this video, and it opened my eyes. I made a list with my goals, and why I want to have my degree in criminology. The list is hanging above my desk, now whenever I feel less motivated I just look up at the little list and just instantly get motivated again. Truly thank you soo much! And good luck to all the students ! Keep going you are doing great!
I'm currently studying for the bar exam which is in 61 days, and this was very much needed. Your words as well as your excellent editing reminding me of how good it feels to achieve something I've worked hard for and to see my full potential represented. I'm also struggling w other positive habit-forming, so I think i will definitely return to this video in future to help me get a grip of what's important. 💕
I am so greatful that I saw this video today. Your videos made me realized how drive is far more powerful to have than motivation. It's the whys that keeps us going no matter how hard are things. Thank you for making me realized why I should keep going.

My parents moved to Canada and my dad who used to own a multi-millionaire company, drove a garbage truck and worked at pizza stores. My mum worked at a daycare even-though being a chartered accountant. Your words are so motivational and make me really emotional..... I want to do it so I do my side for my parents because they did sooo much eventhough being the first-generation family. I asked my dad for a toy last year but he couldn't buy it because of our financial situation. 2 years after, he remembers it and brought me it again. Your words really stick to my heart. I'm so thankful that today I discovered this video and this amazing youtuber, because I really needed motivation I was failing and failing but now I understood what I have to do to achieve my dreams💜
Amy said what I've been wanting to hear for so loong. My drive goes way beyond academic success since I've wanted to achieve a whole new life that is incredibly hard to get to. Studying is just a way to get there, so the key is remembering the core of the goal, the main WHY, not just romanticizing studying.
@wamyy5
7 ай бұрын
Ah I'm so glad to echo your thoughts! Yes, romanticizing studying is not the best solution. You've got a great attitude that will take you far!
"IF YOUR WHY IS CLEAR, YOUR HOW IS STRONG" As an fellow asian i completely agree with that part where how our parents had their childood VS ours. New subscriber here. 🖐✋
Im an international student, I have been always thinking about how to be better in highschool. Although I thought I tried my best I believed that I had not done anything yet, I felt bad about myself for not procrastinating and studying well. I tried to plan but felt many times, something I know that I could do better is that I should only focus on my self and stop comparing myself to others. Doing and keeping silence is the thing I am going to look forward to doing. Thank you alot
I really agree with your video and I can understand the concept of impulse. It's not about having motivation, but having a gear that moves you to act in a certain way, like your parents' example.
I have the same personality like you, almost similar incidents, right now, same thing was happening every atom of my body was pulling away from the hardwork of studying. Thanks for putting up this video. Loved every second of it. :)
wow you just cleared a cloud in my head on why i should studyy... i have a really important exam coming up you really motivated me to study... thank you
It would be wonderful to hear about your parents journey and thoughts on applying your suggestions to the older generations. Thanks for your ear! ❤

I just watched the video and this is really helpful! I've seen other videos talk about this topic but they never really had the same effect since they talked about doing routines, schedules and such, but hearing your parents' story also made me reflect on my own situation and it gave me get a bit of a reality check. The tip about drive instead of motivation was also really good, I realized I usually get bursts of energy when I think about the job I want or lifestyle I want to live rather than grades alone. I think the best tip was peeling back the layers of what you want to achieve and why, in order to get to the root of what you actually want. This is my favorite video from you, thank you! 😊

I personally have an average big dream, want to get straight As, get into a really god college, get a well paying job so I can financially support myself and my family in the future and hopefully squeeze in a world tour with my family. Thats great and all for people who attach their worth and sense of self to their outward accomplishments, and had supportive parents who cared about them, and have health, but finding drive and a "Why" is hard without those things, or has no initial thing they desire.
i love your content so much!! it helps me a lot!!
Thank you Amy. This was almost the most important video you've put out till this day. My main struggle is finding a purpose and your perspective is truly guiding. I will think real deep on my why to create my drive. (that kinda rhymed)

Thank you for watching and for your helpful comment. I'm grateful to know you found this video so valuable! Haha nice rhyming. You got this!
I agree with that burning desire to do well being a motivation… however, I understand that not everyone has that and there are people who perceive themselves to be academic failures… in those cases gamifying study, small rewards and group sessions really helps!
Thanks Amy so much for your math advice..It really helped, Amy..I got the third highest score in my mid term math test!!
That's so nice of you... Like you literally picked the real "Why(s) " and went deeper into them... Which others hardly talk about apart from the static techniques that they focus more on This also has helped relate to you at a much deeper level Thank you dear for such a nice reminder...❣️❤😇

Thank YOU for watching and commenting! Your support helps me continue to make videos like this!
While watching this video I realized, I'm jealous of you. My parents are from a similar background but from Africa. I was never supported when I wanted to do something, I always had SOME limitation, money, bullying, no friends, no motivation. My parents bought the nicest things for themselves while throwing the scraps towards me. But watching I've come to realize, that doesn't matter. I have so much potential as a high schooler to grow and flourish I just have to calm down, breathe and take it easy, i just have to apply myself and it won't actually be as bad as I think it will. I need to take that leap even with nobody there to catch me on the other side. Thank you 🙏🏽 and bless you.
Thank youuuuuuu I love love this it touched my problem directly thank u.
A very very clear voice you have. ❤❤❤
