Children of Shame | ENDEVR Documentary
Watch' Growing Up Poor: Hidden Homeless Kids 'here: • Growing Up Poor: Hidde...
Miao Miao, her brother Xiaolong, and Xin Liao are some of the luckier kids who live in the Sun Villages created by Mrs. Zhang Shuqin. But in reality, they have a heavy past and present to cope with. As the other young dwellers there, they are the offspring of people sentenced to death. This documentary shows the lives and daily routines of these children and their benefactors over two years.
Many of the people sentenced to death leave behind young orphans who are not taken care of at all by social services, even when their families or relatives cannot afford to do it. Also, these vulnerable children are generally despised and rejected by the rest of the community - and are not eligible for adoption. Because as a famous Chinese proverb says: «tigers do not bear puppies». Like Florence Nightingale, one woman, Mrs. Zhang Shuqin, has decided to turn the children’s destiny into her life’s struggle. She has set up ten orphanages to raise them. In these orphanages, called «Sun Villages», everybody works hard to offer the «children of shame» a more positive future.

Children of shame are the offspring of people sentenced to death in China. This documentary shows the lives of these innocent children who are shunned by society and their benefactor over the course of two years. We are hopeful to bring a follow up on some of these kids who are grown ups now. We will keep you posted.

It's their culture. Did you watch her daughter shame her in son while holding his children for the last time? Let her granddaughter work in a factory at 9? The girl can't attend school because they have no money. Prisoners selling their organs or having them stolen. They have death busses, ffs! They're not westerners. China has spent hundreds of years as a closed society. I'm shocked this documentary was even allowed to be released. Then again, China can see the decline in the west. They have nothing to be ashamed of anymore.

Its sad, but that little boy had the right to meet his father. I do think the grandma was making things worse though, but I doubt I'd be calm if my son was being killed.

This really brings back memories of my childhood. I spent 13 years in a Chinese orphanage from birth before being adopted by an American family. You know, what they show on TV about orphanages? It's mostly just the good stuff. I remember when the media or some charity event came around, we had to be on our best behavior and spruce up the place. But behind the scenes? Totally different vibe. I won't go into detail about my experience in the Chinese orphanage, but just imagine one teacher trying to manage 40-50 kids with different age range. Growing up in a state-funded orphanage as a girl, it wasn't easy. Before I was adopted, they had to find your birth parents first, but that's tricky because, well, abandoning kids is illegal in China. So, of course, no one is going to come forward claiming they're your birth parents. Lucky for me, they couldn't find my birth parents, and I was able to come to America. Also, back then, it was rare to get adopted at the age of 13; the cut-off age, I think, was 14. Otherwise, I'd probably be stuck in China with not much to look forward to.

China is a desperately poor country. There is no food stamps, no welfare, no food banks, you must pay for school and school supplies. People starve to death in China. It is a brutal place and I lived there for 2 years. You have old people working hard physical labor but not earning enough to afford a bowl of noodles. When they say they can't afford to keep the children it it true. Children must have food, medicine and schooling. This orphan lady is a rare gem. Most Chinese care only for their own family and they aren't charitable at all. It is a harsh, unforgiving place where there is a 97% conviction rate and you are guilty unless you can prove your innocent. It is a terrible place.

Little Dragon & Little Bud`s grandfather is a higher spiritual being, who follows that beat of a different drum. Seemingly he understands the difference between the letter of the law and the spirit of the law. People who resist caring for their orphaned children, because of shame, need to learn that they are the very ones, for whom we should feel shame. Such a loving, dutiful grandfather, will no doubt be remembered for many generations, in the stories of his grandchildren. A kind heart enables spiritual growth. Pridefulness shrinks and diminishes the soul.

The way people in China communicate so harshly is painful to watch. It’s one thing to speak candidly to an adult but there is a way to explain things to children w/compassion/consideration. Everything is so matter of fact, the tone of voice/yelling doesn’t help either. Highly emotional situations but also symultaneously promoting suppression as a coping mechanism. Seems like a lot of emotionally neglected little people growing up there. “Stop crying, don’t cry… it’ll be ok” meanwhile the child’s entire life is crumbling, they’re abandoned, shamed, confused & scared. Seems like a perfect formula for everything to be ok to me. 🤯

OMG! I bawled through that whole documentary :( Those poor children who are not only left orphans, but they are shunned by society and their own families won't raise them. How utterly heartbreaking. I wanted to hug all of them. They deserve so much. The woman running the different Sun Villages is a saint. What a beautiful heart she has. If i had millions of dollars, I would go over there and give them the coolest orphanage they could imagine. New clothes, electronics, supplies, beds, paint job, new buildings....They deserve the best.

As I'm no stranger to a broken family, violence, poverty and homelessness, my heart goes out to these children and their families who weren't able to provide a safe and stable homestead for their lost kids. Second is the orphanage the caretakers, the volunteers and of course the orphan grandmother of 2000 orphan children. Raising them with a warm and friendly welcome, structure, schooling, gardening, social construct and maintaining contact with their families where possible. This orphanage is an achievement of epic proportions, worth 10 times the Nobel Prize for Peace. Seeing the kids happy to see her arriving in the building, giving them hugs as if it were their own children. That moved me to tears. But also, seeing the kids struggle to wrap their heads around their situation also reduced me to tears. Having your parents removed from your life is a scar that will always hurt.

Such a criminal has to pay a big sum of money to the families of the victims, according to the Chinese law. The children are supposed to be supported by their extended families. It would cause outrage in the society, if the criminals are viewed as being rewarded. So, such a program would have to be possible through more private channels or semi-private channels.
