Why do you think he’s playing so well??
Bill was… man, there was just no mistaking his sound. Beautifully reconstructed, Jacob. Super helpful for anyone wanting to lend some authenticity to the classics, as well as carrying his distinctive style forward for new generations!
This is, by far, the most informative, didactic video on Bill Evans piano style and technique that I have come across! I will search to see if Mr. Dupre has written a jazz piano course.

@@androidkenobi didactic means basically that it follows a consistent educational method, with theoretical explanation, practical examples and clear references. Did you shirk your school much? :D
It’s weird...you would think these kind of voicings etc would sound like mush, but Bill Evans made it work...it’s magic!
2yrs ago, upload, and KZread just now recommends this vid. Better late than never I suppose. Very lovely playing
some of my takeaways - arpeggiating in 10ths (3rds) through seventh chords - flat 6 triad -> flat 5 triad both played over maj3+flat 7. then resolve to 1. can also move through different inversions (very cool, need to think about that more - that descending line sounds so nice) - in dorian, moving in seventh chords 1 2 3 4 3 2 1 sounds wonderful - can combine arpeggiating in 10th/3rds with moving through the scale - i also realized 2-5-1 moves through the circle of fifths while watching this video (pretty new to harmony haha) - feel like i saw a lot of 7ths as the lowest note, want to keep that in mind also super great video! extremely clear presentation and clean camera work and editing.
Phenomenal analysis. He has Bill Evans down cold- not just harmonically, but also rhythmically. such a unique sound.
This dude not only sounds, but LOOKS like a neo Claude Debussy.

I was really getting bored with my Jazz piano playing, but after watching this video, I got fired up! This is by far the best breakdown of Bill Evans style. Thank you
This is by far the best video tutorial for jazz players I've ever found. My playing took a big leap when I began incorporating some of the ideas. Kudos to Jacob Dupre, a great teacher and musician. One more reason to love Sweetwater!
this is the best short cut to Bill Evans I ever saw
Genius stuff, My Man. I want Sweetwater to raise your pay. Some of the best work on deconstructing Evans I've seen. (Some of us are proud he's from New Jersey...!)

Bill Evans grew up in Somerville, New Jersey, just a few minutes away from where I grew up. He first learned classical piano, just like me. It certainly gives one a unique perspective of jazz piano.
Nice..I’m currently working on Reflections in D ...Evans transcription...beautiful piece
In all the years I've played I have found several instances of breaking down styles. This is a great one. I hope other pianists take note.
He also has Bill's feel down, as in how he starts his ascending thirds accented and in Forte volume, while playing softer as it gets higher in register... This vid is pure magic! I'm lucky the KZread algorithm served me this gem.
Thanks for the comments everyone! If you like these videos, please be sure to share them and comment your ideas for future lessons. Maybe on a specific player? Composer? Song? Style? Let me know! FYI, this very video was suggested in a comment section and I thought it was a great idea. Yours could be next! Jacob Dupre Sweetwater Keyboard Artist

Jacob Dupre you are Claude Debussy’s illegitimate great great great grandson. I knew you were French right at the beginning of the video. Funny how he influenced Bill Evans. Thanks for the lesson!
Amazing overview here. Breakdown of stylistics of Barry Harris next! Jacob. Thanks.
I am a guitarist that really got opened to new approaches from this video. Wow you have amazing gifts as a player and a teacher... Thanks..😎👍🏾
Another example of how Sweetwater is just the best.
Man you make it look so easy
You are a great teacher, this was very informative, i hope You keep doing videos of this kind.
Brilliant teaching of a master’s techniques. Keeping Bill alive!
This is amazing, I've been learning Bill Evans tunes and this is exactly what I was looking for.
Another great video Jacob!! Excellent work! Keep it up my friend!
Nice, great interactive class.... Thank you Sweetwater and Jacob Dupre! 5 stars
Outstanding. My dad plays a lot of Evans. I'm mostly a guitarist, but play a bit of keys and grok all the theory. I've always wanted more insight into .. this! This lays it all out. Out-stand-ing! *Give this man a bonus Sweetwater!*
Wow, this is such a helpful tutorial - great work! Evans is my piano idol and this really breaks down some of the intricacies of his work in an easy-to-understand way.
Bill style is unique in his time a fusion of Impressionism and jazz the result is perfect.
The magic of music explained very well. Thanks Sweetwater and of course Mr. Evans.
Outstanding! Great calm persona with straightforward explanations of a few mysteries of Bill Evans playing laid out for “mere mortals” to understand. Thank you!
Excellent! I'll come back to it several times as there is a lot of meat in this explanation. Just what I was looking for! Thanks!
Brilliantly done. Finally something for more advanced players .keep up the great work!
Great video! Illuminating one of the most mysterious and beautiful jazz pianists. The pioneer of classical jazz fusion. Why was he so cool? Well, now I can appreciate him even more!
So beautiful, and so inspiring. Great video. I'd always listened to Bill as pure magic. But you make it so understandable here.
Really nice video -- there's definitely a lot of Bill Evans's sound and feeling here.
Jacob Dupre, thank you so much for this video. You really explained clear and simple the very substance of Evans playing chords and melodies. I have enjoyed what you showed here and will have to refer more than once to this video in order to really master what you analysed for us here. Congrats!
Such a great lesson! more of this! So clear.
One of Bill's things, definitely. Excellent.
This video is exceptional. Needless to say, I’m a huge Bill Evans fan! Thanks so much for these insights!
Wow. Brilliant and wonderful tutorial. Thank you!
brilliant explanation and demonstration of something most people like but can't grasp how it was done. Best chord lesson on you tube that I've ever seen. many many thanks. we owe you ...big time mate !
Excellent video.. easy to follow directions.. Bill was such a genius!
As a beginner I was proud learned elementary major, dominants, sevenths key of C! Found out about other keys and now this….your playing of Evans style is inspiring but need a lot of work just on the chords..like him with Tony Bennett….thanks😊
Fascinating subject, and brilliantly presented. Thank you !
DAMN! this video is pure gold!! Many thanks I’ll practice this right away!
This is a great lesson. Thanks for posting.
This is excellent! Very clear explanation of stuff that spans a wide spectrum of harmonic complexity
Great video lesson. I've been a Bill Evans fan for almost 50 years, but this gave me new insight. Thank you.
Superb grace and style, thank you....I've much to absorb and practice
Incredibly useful tips. Thanks.
Phenomenal! Thank you so much for your analysis! Bill Evans is by far my favorite.
This is jazz piano gold right here.
Loved your demo on Bill Evans . No better jazz Bill Evans, a genius hands down. Hope to see more of your videos. I am practicing every day in hopes of getting better .
Beautiful, beautiful video. All is clear, all is calm. Thank you.
Thanks.. really useful stuff here. Sort of knew about some of it but you've given me lots of extra ideas!
That was the best tutorial I’ve ever seen in my life!! Thank you!! Yessa!!!
Hey Jacob! Great as usual! Thanks!
This is great! Thanks so much for sharing. Please do more videos like this, id really like to understand more about how jazz works. Especially that flat 6 moving across cicle of fifty. That was eye opening. Thanks!!
Just want to add to the chorus of people who commented on how helpful this tutorial is. You've pulled the veil off some of the sounds he achieves. I just subscribed and I hope you do more on Bill and other pianists. Thanks so much.
Fantastic tutorial. It's back to the shed I go, but this time with direction thanks to this video.
Very nice insights to Bill's playing. you showed them and played them very well. Thanks : )
Phenomenal. And well-taught as well. Thank you.
Absolutely brilliant but light years ahead of my skill level. Thanks
superb analysis, demonstrated perfectly
20 min that s a perfect size for a tuto that contains a lot of substance!thanks v much
Thank you, Jacob! A very clear breakdown of the use of triads, and arpeggiated tenths, and what was even more interesting to me - that B dim whole-half scale and the chords produced by passing tones. Keith Jarrett would be my next request, no - Thelonius! Monk first! Then Mr. Jarrett. 🤗
Fantastic, informative and beautifully played, Thank you...
Love the triad pairs. b6 and b5. Gonna try and work that out on guitar
Great tutorial! Thanks man.
All you lucky young'uns. You have the internet and youtube and amazing people like Jacob Dupre. Anyone who wanted to play like Bill Evans in his day played vinyl records over and over again to transcribe and decipher his licks. There weren't even Sony Walkmans around to help. You had to already be pretty talented to do that.
Killer lesson, thanks~
It's a very special talent you have there. It requires a talent for complex shapes and even more complex musical chromatic shapes and I wish I hadn't got lost when you moved out of C major! Very few people can think with this kind of complexity and they are as scarce as the Bill Evans's of this world. Actually I think Bill was of another world.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! You’ve inspired me and I’m heading to the piano right now...
Thank you Mr. Dupre!
If only I could upvote this more. So many excellent videos exist on this same subject, yet this is the best of all of them.
This is GREAT Jacob! Well done!
Thank you for this, very helpful and clear.
Really hope you start your own channel. Best tutorial on the Bill Evans style i've seen!!
Real great, I'd love to see more of these kinds of videos (especially with some B3 techniques) in the future
Excellent, a jazz tutorial doesn't get any better, thanks!!!
Wonderful, great teaching!
great stuff, learned a lot very fast in this one!
Thank you for explaining so nicely.

Hey Jacob...you have to keep posting things like this. One of the best style/technique breakdowns I've ever seen. I'd like to see your interpretation/explanation of BE's Beautiful Love or Come Rain or Come Shine. Much great thanks!
