I have a 5420T, Korean built Electromatic. Absolutely love the Filtertrons. You need to try a Gretsch with either the Filtertrons or TV Jones pickups. Very unique... makes you want to rocakabilly, whether you are into that or not 😜 The Streamliners are a bit more petite in shape overall. If you step up to a 5420 series or really step up to a 6100 series Gretsch, those are generally the larger bodied versions and make you want to get your Chet Atkins or Brian Setzer goin' on!

Landon have you reviewed any solid body Gretsch Electromatic guitars? I’m curious of your opinion of them.

I own five Gretsch guitars, four Electromatics, one Streamliner. I am VERY happy will all of them! Fit, finish, frets, etc are tops. Just tune 'em and play! Welcome to the Gretsch Club, Mr Bailey!

Bigsby is a completely different animal in every aspect. Use, sound, feel, stability, etc... I own the 5655tg. The bigsby on that is a step up, and it was a learning process for me as I brought those things listed above under control. Eventually the bigsby became a great part of my Gretsch experience. You just have to give it time to get past the frustration part. It's not a fender type trem and it's certainly not a kahler or a rose. It is smooth and classic and beautiful.

I think the bigsby gets way too much crap and it servers me fine.

Gretsch is different enough to be really enjoyable. Strats and LPs are wonderful but, I feel use one Strat or LP and basically you’ve sampled every one. Sure, different models have a slightly different feel but to me a they are all variations on vanilla. A Gretsch is a different flavour all together. Variety is enjoyable!

Go local, get a Gretsch in your hands, plug in, and a week later you will be back with the money to buy it. Nothing against the big online stores. I bought a G5622 last year from an online music chain, but only after I went into their local brick & mortar and touched one. I have 4 brands of intermediate/player level guitars, and half the time I pick up my Gretsch.

I love my Gretsch g5222. Got mine set up to my liking. Beyond great guitar. Not even just for its price. Plays like a dream.

Hey Landon, welcome to the Gretsch world! these are great guitars with their own character.I have a bigger one (the G542OT in Aspen Green with re-issue Blacktop filtertrons). I bought it essentially for Jazz tones but it's a great guitar for Rock rythms. AC/DC guitarist (not Angus, his brother) uses one all the time, a bit customised. It has sound you'll get noweher else! the Bigsby is an old design (50's?), and not designed for modern shredding but, for a more subtle type of vibrato/tremolo. Think Rockabilly/Brian Setzer type of vibrato, but once you get used to it, it does the trick and is a + to your vocabulary. I updated mine with locking tuners (Sperzel). I'm a patator/spanking guitarist and it helps with the tunning stability. If I only keep two guitars in my guitar stable, the Gretsch is one of them.Enjoy!

I have that same model plus the 2657t with the bigsby. Both are fantastic guitars. There is a slight difference in tone. They sound great. I highly recommend them both.

About this time last year, I ordered my first Gretsch, a G9221 round neck dobro. I love it. It's got a full, non-tinny sound. Bought my 2nd Gretsch last month, a 5024E rancher. Good tone, though inexpensive and a triangular sound hole - unique. Enjoyed your review.

I’ve got two Japanese Gretsch guitars. They’re amazing. They’ve got a growl that I love. That is a high bigsby though. Get yourself a shorter bigsby spring. You’ve got the long spring. the shorter spring will make it more more usable.

Glad you liked it and I hope you check out more Gretsch guitars. I've got a G2622 and a G5220 and I love them both. The G5220 is from the Electromatic range and in terms of quality and electronics feels better then the Streamliner. I couldn't find any flaws with it. I've got no experience with Bigsbys, but as far as I know you can change the position or at least the tension by replacing the spring with a softer one.

Have a Gretsch Rancher Falcon Jumbo Acoustic/electric with Fishman electronics I bought back in 2020 paid $729.00 for it it's a remarkable guitar for sure

The bigsby needs to be set up just like the rest of the guitar. On a new one, I'll take the spring out and step on it a few times to soften it up a little. There's also usually a plastic spacer under the spring which you will want to remove that makes the handle stick up higher, but that may prevent the handle from folding away past the bridge properly for storage. I also made sure to use a pencil on the nut and lube on the bridge for tuning stability under stress.

I own this model and an Electromatic (355 size). I really enjoy them. The location of the master volume is great on e you are used to it. Softer springs are available for the Bigsby and the arm can be bent too. Both are great overdriven or clean.

Cool guitar! I have (2) Gretsch guitars. One hollow - & one semi-hollow, similar to this one - but it's an Electromatic. G5622-T in Speyside (amber ish with gorgeous wood-grain). It's incredible. I own a bunch of guitars, & that one is my favorite - by a mile & a half. It's just incredible, and it will play anything you want. It's got surprising power, but you can do anything on it. Cool video. Gretsch is awesome.

I’m new to Gretsch myself....but then bought 3 in 3 months. I had no interest prior to that and like you trying new types of guitars and loving Gretsch. Build quality, fit and finish is excellent. Tone is very different. Really needs a pedal to get the best from it. Great colours too. Loving the Bigsby. No issue with me and their on each of my Gretschs (rat rod, 5655tg and 2410tg).

Nice looking guitar. Looks well made too. Sounded fine to me. Good vid, Landon. Don't like trems though and least of all a cheap Bigsby one! I think there may well be hardtail versions though and one of those could interest me.

I own a 78 Gretsch Committee with the 78 Gretsch Committee matching bass. Great tone and feel, no mods, true vintage. Just bought a year ago the Streamliner G2420T Walnut. Unbelievable tone on any amp and sounds great stand alone. Pretty guitar! Love any Bigsby, like somebody said, change spring out or play the hell out of it!

purfling is the slotted wood strip on the inside of the body that follows the curves and gives a gluing surface for the top or back to attach to the sides...I tried one of those in a music shop and thought it was a very good guitar for the price.

I'm returning to playing guitar after 10+ years, and I bought this guitar in January. I love it, I ended up changing the strings and did a minor string height adjustment and it plays and sounds very well.

Really like the Filtertron-esk pickups, big block inlays and the smaller semi-hollow size. 🤘🎸

I've got 2 gretsch guitars, a 1522 and a 2655 no Bigsby and they are brilliant guitars....fit and finish on both is superb. Get a Gretsch, you will not regret it!

The pickup routing in the block is chambered to allow air to pass between the two sides for a more natural hollow sound. Other center blocks that don't do that sound a little dull.

I got a 5622T, which is the mid-tier (Electromatic) big semi-hollow, and it’s just super nice. The pickups especially are quite an improvement over the Streamliner level.

I used to have one but sold it because the painted neck was way way too ‘sticky’ compared to a regular satin unfinished neck. That said they have relatively unique pickups (except their lower end models which are humbuckers under covers made to look like filtertrons), cool looking Bigsby’s and nice bodies that are smaller than a 335 size guitar

G6659 & G6120 owner here. I like the Pro series. They play and feel great. 🎸 🔥

Hell yeah!!!! I'm in love with Gretsch since I bought this one but with p90's. Killer guitar. Pretty much this one. But I love p90's. And the p90's in these Gretsch Streamliners... sound Great. Not bright at all. I have the one without bigsby. So it's light as a feather. Great guitar.

Thanks Landon! Nice guitar. I love Gretsch! I have a Falcon and an Electromatic G5420T. Gretsch is its own thing and very different from other brands. Versatile with great tones from country to rock. Amazing heritage - Dwayne Eddie, George Harrison, Brian Setzer, Steven Stills, Neil Young and of course Chet Atkins. The Japanese versions are expensive but absolute works of art!

My first experience with the Gretsch was not the best. I got the Streamliner Player and the body was so light and the headstock was so heavy it was very unbalanced. Even sitting down I had to have my left hand touching the neck at all times just to support it and keep it level. Not a good feeling. Standing up was 10x worse. I even got a leather strap with the rough, unfinished side against my body to give it some resistance and it literally pulled my shirt as it neck dove to the floor. I had to attach a second strap from the main strap that connected to my belt to keep it stable. Everything else was just fine. It sounded great, played good and has a nice change of pace from a normal guitar. The balance problem was the deal breaker. So keep it in mind if thinking about a Gretsch.

Nice guitar Landon...it's nice to see u broadtroning your horizons.. 😂...I went with the epi es339 last year when I went shopping for my first semi hollow...the gretsch I played just felt so light next to the epi that I kinda equated the feeling like the gretsch kinda felt like a toy in my hand...idk...I really wanted to like it...the epi blew it away for me...so I got the epi and it's fantastic...but I'm def giving gretsch another go...I'll let the guitar stand alone next time instead of comparing...give it it's dye chance...glad u are opening your mind esp to the SG!!!

Well I bought the Gretsch G5230T just over a year ago & I really like it & I've just pulled trigger on a G2655 Streamliner which is the same as this with a fixed bridge. So yes, I kinda like em;

I bought a Gretsch streamliner center block JR. guitar. Sounded great, but it was the stiffest electric guitar I ever played. Also, it has a dead/metallic sounding G string when fretted up to the 7th fret. Obviously a nut or fret problem, or both. Passed Gretsch inspection, and Sweeter inspection as well. I returned it immediately, and Sweetwater was gracious to pay for return shipping.

Got the same one, but red!

Another entertaining posting Landon. Are you posting a 2021 guitar collection video? I would like to see what you kept and what found a new home.

That's the one I like in the exact colour, but wish it had the electromatic pickups in it. It really should have a roller bridge on it and the spring in the arm mechanism can be changed out for different sizes

I have a G2410t hollow body and a G5230t. These are both beautiful guitars and I have now got a Gretsch obsession. My workhorses were always a 90s US Fender Strat Ultra and a Gibson Blues Hawk, but from playing Gretsch guitars these have stayed in their cases. I am now thinking about a G2655t. In my opinion the filter tron pickups are a lot nicer than their brod trons. I am thinking of replacing the brod trons with a set of filter trons. I never use the Bigsby very much and only very lightly if I do. It is not a wammy bar/trem if that is what you are looking for. Tuning stability is a problem on these guitars. I would suggest that if you are going to purchase a Gretsch it would be worth budgeting in for an original set of Grovers or Gotch machine heads. My guitars both go out of tune with string bending and a bit of Bigsby use.

Take the Bigsby's spring out and compress it under your foot a few times to break it in. And while the spring's out, you can remove the spacer underneath for a lower angle on the arm if desired.

I’ll have to check one out. I’ve always wanted one, tried a different model and hated the neck, it reminded me of a 50s rounded neck. If this model is more like the tapered slim, I might actually like the neck.

My first quality electric is a Gretsch G5220, which is the Electromatic Jet with a stoptail. Has the same Broad'Tron pickups on a chambered mahogany body. Still love playing it. It's a great blues guitar.

The broadtrons are great. I have the G5222 and no matter what tone I dial in on another guitar, as soon as I plug in the Gretsch it just sounds richer. They're something special. These Gretsch models could be the best 1st guitar AND only guitar someone ever owns. Love them.

@@lueysixty-six7300 I can only compare it to my Epiphone Les Paul, so I don't know if this helps. The G5220 sounds a lot clearer and has even a bit of twang (but is still warm & rich). The Epiphone gets muddy very quickly which isn't a problem with the Gretsch, even at high gain. It is very versatile and since I've got it I don't use the Epiphone a lot. I only play Blues and Rock but I'm sure you can play pretty much anything with it.

@@lueysixty-six7300 It’s far more trebly than a Les Paul (unless it’s a Les Paul with P90s). Filtertrons and Blacktop Filtertrons are different than what you’d usually find in a Les Paul. My 5220 produces a loud, crystal-clear sound. I don’t find it to be as robust and loud as the Burstbuckers, 490, 496, 500, P100s or PAF Antiquity/Seth Lover pickups in my Les Pauls. It sounds great and works for a lot of things. For the price, it’s unbelievable. I find myself looking for the Gretsch often.

@@lueysixty-six7300 Not really, it's Gretschian... the tonal profile is very different. I know there are similarities... 2 humbuckers, lots of knobs, but the sound is different.

My first Gretsch was also my first electric, a 1957 6120 "Streamliner" in sunburst with the usual Melita bridge, but with the new for '57, "Pat. Applied For" Filtetron. I bought it in February of 1965, for $125.00 ($1,106.36 in 2022) with a Univox 10-watt amp thrown in. It was in new condiiton, seemingly unplayed. There was another guitar in the window for the same amount, a 1958 Gibson "Black Beauty" Custom, three gold PAF Les Paul. The store owner handed it to me to try out, but it was so damn' heavy I rejected it without even plugging it in (not the last time I would make a similar mstake). Besides, I had never seen or heard of this guitar. It seemed odd. George Harrison played a Gretsch of some kind, so the light, hollowbody "Streamliner" was the one for me. When I think back on this, I am of course sorry that I was so ignorant of guitars not to take the Gibson, but that "Streamliner" sounded great and it served me well for years. I think it might have been one of the first Gretsches with a Filtertron in it.

Nice looking, manageable sized semi hollow. Did I see a long neck tenon hiding under the black shielding paint and wires, barely visible, if so good to know. Been wondering about differences between a Gretsch with a FIltertron compared to these Broadtrons. These sound good, not exactly like "standard" humbuckers but with a Gretschy tone.

There's a nylon bushing in the Bigsby arm pocket. I removed mine on that same model so the trem sits flatter and is easier to reach.

10:07 Landon! Try the boss BD2! Gain at 0 and level super high sounds good, volume at unity and high gain also sounds SUPER good. It’s a very versatile pedal. U can also try the Keely Phat mod pedal which is basically a BD2 :)

I'd love to see you do an ObsidianWire replacement video on this one. 😜

I had a Gretsch G5420T aspen green but sold it because the lower output pickups. My pedals reacted also totally different. But I liked the playability so last year I found a G5120 orange but the previous owner already replaced the pickups with TV Jones pu's. and a tru arc bridge. and it came with a case ! it had even already dice knobs and rockabilly sticker. so yes, one of the best buys ! But since you are also a Radiohead fan, all you still need is a Rickenbacker, no ? :-)

I've got a red one, solid tailpiece. For the money I really enjoy it. I do like the jangle sound, from a clean amp, but crank it up and its a beast. Lol I like it anyway. Have fun, enjoy

I guess the only different type of guitar Landon is left to try now on the channel is probably an ibanez and a danelectro model it's great to see you branch out of the fender gang

Imma Ibanez boy, love their hollowy stuff! Those Artcores handle the Rock very well, I dig these, yet it'd take a little more 2 win me over 😀

You have got to try one of their baritones they are awesome.

A guy in my band long, long ago played a Gretsch electromatic jet ...looks like a les paul and it was a great guitar...they have tons of midrange jangle to them...I looked at the streamliner when I bought my Casino....I may pick up the electromatic jet without the Bigsby that has a chambered body but no f holes....I've heard great demos of those guitars ...

I have one- I like it a lot. Plays very nice and looks like a much more expensive guitar with the chrome hardware and v-stop tail/ Gretsch knobs. Right now I'm liking the pickups, but I may go with traditional Filtertrons some day. The Dark Cherry metallic paint sells the guitar alone. I couldn't let it go when I saw it at the dealer, but I keep it because it plays nice.

Nice! I picked up a nice 5410 Rat Rod(phantom grey) from Steve's on Toronto. Awesome guitars! The bigsby is a lil loud against the hollow body but it seems to be getting better. I may replace the spring with a softer one though

@@daveyponderosa9549 hey. Its a great guitar. I wrote "big sky" but it was supposed to say Bigsby. If youre not going to use the Bigsby much, i would look for a model that doesnt have one. As soon as i use the Bigsby it throws it out of tune, but that can be fixed. Thats the only negative i have on the guitar. I also have a Gibson Johnny A, which is a similar layout, and i can use that Bigsby i want and its fine. So i believe its just a matter of having it tweaked. Good luck, but you really cant go wrong with a Gretsch.

I just got a gold jet Club junior over the summer. I really like the neck pickup. Then I gutted the guitar. Gotoh wraparound Bridge, Duncan Phat cats, CTS parts and some locking tuners. It plays great but I ask myself was it worth it. LOL

The Streamliner series seems great, but the pickups are too similar to standard humbuckers. Moving up to the Electromatics gets you some pickup options that start to really give you that brighter, jangly Gretsch sound.

I was pleased with the one I tried the other day. Non tremolo streamliner. Wow! Not many guitar's impress me the way this guitar did. Unfortunately, mother laminated woods turned me off. A total blue's machine. Fretwork amd pickups were amazing.

I bet it's no coincidence that your three other blue guitars are in the background of that opening shot.

@@landonbailey what's your thoughts on the neck pup? I'm having a time dialing in the tone I like. Seems a bit dark. Wondering if different pots would help. One the other hand, middle position with the neck volume rolled off just a touch is pretty choice. Hope your enjoying yours.

I had this exact one. The pots are horrible and the bigsby gets it out of tune, real bad neck dive…… but I really liked it. Sound was really good and I liked the light weight. Neck was great. I got rid of it because of the bigsby. May get another one without the bigsby.

I have fallen in love with the gretsch that i have i think they play wonderfully. I definitely will be trying this the next time I go to a guitar store that has one.

The electromatic projet is the only one I've ever played and I almost bought it. But got a prs anyway. Wound up ditching the prs and just sticking to teles, strats, and my casino mostly. Also I modded the crap out of an ibanez gax

Congrats. My personal taste prefers the Gretsch G2622T GM Streamliner, but that's just me.

Great video, to the point, I'm a new subscriber. My 2cents - I like Gretsch. If Fender/Gibson are an Acura and Squire/Epiphone are their Honda's, Gretsch is a Cadillac. Some Gretsch's cost more than others but they all just say Cadillac. Gretch has maintained great attention to detail making high quality instruments. Specifically, I bought a Grestch (my first one, on sale new) for $350USD that is comparable to my Gibson LP Tribute that was $900USD used and well over $1k new. High quality, unique sounds. Total sleeper guitars that punch well above they're weight class. When i need some grit the Gretsch comes out. Blues, rock, jazz... yeah even metal. Yeah they look a little retro. Totally under rated IMHO.

I believe the French word you're looking for regarding Maple is "Mah-play"...or not. Anyway, thank you Mr. Bailey for the real world testing of yet another wonderful guitar! You are "Le Man"!

Gretsch are my favorite brand!!! But I recommend a different pickup for you. Gretsch has two types of humbuckers. Filtertrons which are the ones they are famous for, then the broadtrons which you have and give a little more mid tone, and then they have a single coil called dynasonic which are amazing!! I think you'd like those given how you're used to single coils.

You therefore have a preference for Filter trons over the broad trons? I consider the 5230 in Black. Hope it’s the right choice…

Very interested in these guitars. However if you want a lefty Bigsby on it, looks like you would have to pony up the big bucks and buy a Nashville or White Falcon

I bought myself this guitar in the imperial stain for my birthday a couple months back, oldly enough I use it for mostly milky chance and Hozier stuff lmao

This might sound dumb on a deep dive video, but I appreciate your being able to say "I don't know", instead of making absolute statements. It's refreshing imo and is oddly making the guitar more attractive to buy.

I have one , I really do enjoy it however it does have neck dive .

I'd recommend modding the guitar with Filtertrons as they'll give you more of the classic Gretsch tones.

Nice review, Broadtron pickups aren,t the standard Grestch sound , but they sound great. only real problem with this serie, is the bridge, with time, the screw get loose and rattle a lot , even make nasty sound when playing. just need to change the bridge and voilà, happy guitarist,

Reverend Guitars have a much softer Bigsby spring available. I believe they cost around 5 or 6 dollars. Makes a world of difference.

I also don’t know things I don’t know about. I feel your pain. That blue color really brings out the…uh…blue tone. Way bigsby-er too.

I got the 26557 Streamliner Jr red model and I like the guitar a lot. I’m not the biggest fan of the neck pickup, which sounds muddy to me, while the middle position and bridge pickup sound great. I’m trying to decide if I want to put Filtertron/ TV Jones pickups in it, or eventually save up and get an Electromatic in the future. I also put the Gretsch metal arrow knobs on it and I think it looks incredible. Do you still have this guitar? I also got a Vox AC10 and found your close look video hilarious 😂.

I got a G2420 recently and have some tuning issues stock and the nut wasn’t cut that well. Planning on getting that cleaned up, upgrade the bridge and see where we are. If any more issues will look at tuners and a new nut. You are correct on the fit and finish are fantastic for the price. I’m going to upgrade the electronics and get some hum bucket sized filtertrons, should be a great guitar after that.

any plans on putting more traditional gretsch/filtertron style pickups in it like from tv jones or similar? also re: the bigsby i believe you can get different springs for them for a few bucks that are different resistances
