Unlocking the New Testament Part 18 - Colossians

This study is a must for every Christian. The problems in the Colossian church are with us today as we find when we examine Paul’s letter to see what he was responding to. Paul had neither founded nor visited this church, but he’d been told of problems there. Colossae was a cosmopolitan town with many religions which presented relational problems. David believes they had brought too much from outside into the church, which is again a problem in our modern age. He says Colossians gives us a wonderful tool to analyse syncretism, the mixture of faiths. Christ loses his preeminence in the church when other beliefs are mixed in. “If there’s one thing Christ does, he saves us from religion. Christianity is not a religion… It is a relationship with Christ.” This letter can be summarized by two themes - Syncretism that makes a religion of Christianity; and the simplicity of centring everything on relationship to Christ. The New Testament does not tell us to observe Sunday as a special day, or Christmas or Easter. Colossians warns against losing our salvation.

It was from listening to this man or God's preaching that through the power of the Holy Spirit i had a spiritual awakening that the doctrine of ( once saved always saved) is a false doctrine. Glory to God.

There's nothing new under the Sun different time, place and people but yet the same things, amid the various voices and clamor; we hear even now synchronism in 2020 in mist of COVID-19. God is sounding the alarm, that through his Son (Jesus Christ) is the Way, Truth and Life and be rooted and grounded in truth and stay in relationship by the word of God in Christ Jesus the hope of Glory!!! Great teaching❤️🥰

I am eager to protect the environment, because the earth is God's gift to mankind. I want the earth to be less polluted because I love my neighbours and my children. It is foolish to worship the earth itself, as though it were a diety. As for having Sunday as a day for church - people KNOW this is the day when churches open, so it saves confusion, both for believers, and for those who are seeking to learn about God.

Really ? Is that possible ? I have seen many teachers preach only Catholics celebrate Christmas and they use it to criticise and hate Catholics. Then another teaching, same preacher talks about their Christmas. I do find it very hard to believe anyone who says they do not celebrate Christmas. So hard to get away from Christmas.

"He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him." (Colossians 1:15-16)

I love Pawson and am excited to meet him in heaven. I’ve listened to almost this entire series and learned much, but his radical Arminianism borders on heresy. Christians most certainly can not lose their salvation. - They went out from us because they were never part of us.

C P So? - church fathers are certainly not who we should look to for precise and sound doctrinal statements for obvious reasons. Even the most basic overtly agreed upon orthodox doctrines such as the Trinity didn’t come until after several hundred years of processing and systematizing Scriptures. Calvin certainly was a tremendous, God given, luminary super- genius that greatly advanced the coherency of Christian doctrine, but theology advances much like the empirical sciences. By standing on the shoulders and relying on the cumulative insights of great theologians in the past, we can arrive at a more robust and precise understanding of what the Bible teaches, and how individual doctrines relate to one another. An average Christian layman probably knows far more about the theology proper than Justin Martyr did, in the same way that an average high school student knows much more about the natural sciences than Galileo. Beyond that, the point just isn’t accurate. The vast majority of fathers understood the rudiments of the Gospel, “salvation by grace.”

This wonderful Christian man is giving a warning from the scriptures. Be careful. Continue to walk with Jesus. Do not neglect your salvation. I am not worried about losing my salvation because of my love for Jesus. However, (first) there are many (like my dear mother) who thinks they are saved because they said a prayer at an altar 50 years ago but she does not have Jesus anywhere near first in her life.. And (second) we must always seek to live with the Holiness and Righteousness of Christ. When His righteousness stops being our purpose in life, we are walking on very shaky ground. Yes, we are saved and maintained by Grace but do not confuse this Grace as a license to live in selfishness.
