8 years have gone, since I "accidentally" discovered you; and I'm so glad that accident happened 😅 Love listening to you.

As an ELT (English Language Teaching...to non-native speakers) professor and expert with numerous qualifications and decades of experience and expertise, I was bullied out of my last two jobs by psychotic "colleagues" and "bosses" (not leaders), even though (or because) I was the most qualified and experienced person and one of the few, or the only, experts in the department. I was not rewarded for improving myself. I was mocked. I was sidelined for condemning workplace violence and discrimination (at a university). And the bosses' buddies and compratriats were allowed to do whatever they wanted (including commit abusive acts) and were put on charge of committees even though they had no idea what they were doing and screwed up the entire department. Now I'm my own boss.

For startup companies, they literally cannot afford not to reward initiative, over the outcomes. That's an awesome quote - "good leaders sometimes suffer mission failures and bad leaders sometimes enjoy mission success" - so it goes that we shall reward the behavior that leads to a higher chance for success. I need to revisit the type of behaviors that correlate well to successes.

Sometimes it's really hard to watch Simons videos, because they leave not only a sour taste, but also a feeling that I would describe as _fist_ in your stomach. The sour taste is what would be possible in a company with good leaders. The fist is how much my workplace differs from such a place. I work in a company where they do the exact opposite. The funny thing is you also get punished if you work according to the rules even nobody tells you specifically to do the opposite. To work outside the rules has become such a default over time that you are punished if you don't play Captain _Don't-Care-A-Lot_ . The result is - as Simon explained - that I do not show any initiative and do not care about if anything goes down the river in the company. I just look the other way.

I coach basketball and players often get success with individual moves rather than team play. It's very difficult, despite constantly rewarding team play, to get some players to do it when they get success for themselves by being selfish.

I would welcome it if more leaders would do this. In my case, the initiative has not been rewarded. Not yet.
