Unlocking History: Exploring the Fascinating North Walsham & Dilham Canal
Welcome back to the canal lock, a hidden gem nestled on the North Walsham Canal, intricately connected to the charm of North Norfolk. In this update, we delve into the ongoing restoration efforts undertaken by dedicated volunteers, shedding light on the history and beauty of this captivating canal.
Rediscovering Ebridge Lock
In previous videos, we explored the locks and the canal itself. Still, today's focus is on the remarkable restoration journey of Ebridge Lock, the second lock to undergo a meticulous transformation. The restoration, a testament to the hard work of volunteers, unfolds before us as we witness the revival of this historical site.
A Glimpse into the Past
Standing by the lock, one can't help but marvel at the hustle and bustle of activity. The extensive restoration project reveals the intricate details of the lock, showcasing the craftsmanship of a bygone era. For enthusiasts interested in locks and canal history, a visit to this lock is a must, offering a firsthand look at this captivating piece of the past.
The Lock's Features
Surveying the site, remnants of the original mill catch our eye, now repurposed. The surrounding bridge adds to the picturesque scene, accentuating the natural beauty that defines this area. The charm of the lock is truly encapsulated in the delicate balance between history and modern transformation.
Challenges and Triumphs
Examining the lock, we encountered a section that was once an integral part of the drainage system. However, time has taken its toll, revealing a sagging arch and eroded soil. Despite the challenges, the volunteers demonstrate an unwavering commitment to restoring this essential component. A tricky fix lies ahead, but the dedication of these volunteers is commendable.
The Impact of Local Development
While the restoration efforts are commendable, the local development of a bridge overhead poses a unique challenge. Imagining the historical context, it's fascinating to consider the vessels that once navigated these waters. The slight indentation on the wall hints at a possible interaction with passing boats, adding another layer to the lock's rich history.
Exploring the Canal
For those eager to explore this historic site, boat trips are available. The top gate, currently under restoration, invites visitors to witness the meticulous work being done. Details for arranging boat trips are provided, allowing enthusiasts to experience the canal from a unique perspective.
Briggate Lock stands as a testament to the dedication of volunteers striving to preserve history. Despite the challenges posed by time and development, the allure of this canal remains intact. A visit to Briggate Lock promises a journey through time, a chance to witness the revival of a piece of North Walsham's rich heritage. #Norfolk #Broads

Miles, I had no idea you had made this video. Thank you so much. We are lining the new gates this weekend (01/03/2020). I would be great to see you. Maybe a wee pint? Graham

Yes, I owe it to my ex girlfriend, she got me into the canal and we explored all the locks even on the River Bure up to Alysham. Did a video of that too. 1912 flood and all that.

Not at all. You can explore the beginning by a kayak etc by Wayford Bridge but that will take you to Tonnage Bridge only. It is in need of major work, some 8 miles +/-. It is very accessible by car.

@@paulbutterfield4867 I'm not affiliated at all to Banks Boats, of Wayford Bridge, but they offer kayaks and canoes to hire. I remember the ex and I hired one from Tony there and set off for a wonderful, unspoilt 3 hours along the rivers free of motorised craft.
