Hi Mussa! Thanks for sharing parts of your life as a psychiatrist, your videos are really a great inspiration to me. 🙏🏻 I'm a first year medical student from Vienna and considering to specialize in psychiatry. I'd like to gain some international experience and heard that Swiss hospitals generally provide great teaching. Do you have any recommendations on how/where to apply for clinical clerkships? :)

  • @mussa_hamad

Hello Jan, yes as a student you can do rotations/clerckships here, as I have seen in the past students who did it. Usually they do it on their 4th-6th years of Medical studies, it depends on your university. I am not on how exactly is the process done, but I guess it is similar to applying for working as an Unterassistenzarzt (you send your CV and request per email to HR to the hospital you wish to do clerckship in)

@@mussa_hamad thanks for your reply! our psych lectures are mainly in our 5th year - do you think it's possible to do some rotation before that with just self study/reviewing old materials from previous years? I'd really like get a glimpse of how it's like to work in psychiatry early on. Thank you for the info, anyways. I'll try to contact some clinics then. 😊👍🏻

Hello Dr Mussa, Thank you for all the information. Just wanted to confirm : for non-EU citizens with non-EU diploma, after 5 years of residency training in psychiatry, we'll have to sit for the state exam which is basically about GENERAL medicine before being able to pass the SPECIALITY exam ? Looking forward to your next videos !

Thank you for such valuable information! I am quite interested in psychiatry, however one thing that is somewhat concerning for me is a risk of violence at work due to a certain subset of patients. Is this something that happens often? Do you feel safe at work? Thank you in advance!

Hello friend, you rise a very important point that I feel it deserves a video explaining the risks and personal examples of working with violent (or potentially violent) patients and patients with high risk of self endangerment. My short answer would be: yes I feel absolutely safe working as a psychiatrist also in the high risk acute stations because there are many protective systems set in place to avoid harm for the treating team and the patients (ex. Alarm watches). We also receive training on how to detect and deescalate risky situations which is very helpful to the sense of safety in stationary rotations.

  • @mussa_hamad

I had the impression it had less of an impact on the hiring process. If you graduated with "Summa cum laude" thought, make sure to mention it in the CV under graduation year. My summer practices and block practices were mostly in a non-EU countries (Israel and USA), so not entirely sure how much of an impact it had at the end of the day.

Psychiatry is considered one of the less competitive specialties, and hospitals are usually on the look for residents. For an EU citizen with good language skills and interest in psychiatry, I would say your chances to be accepted are pretty high.

Thank you so much for uploading. I’m living in Switzerland and I have studied Medicine in Pakistan. I’m already done with the process of registration of non recognisable diploma by MEBEKO. Currently learning German and haven’t applied for residency yet. My question is that do I have a chance for starting a residency program here in Switzerland? As you have already explained it depends on the canton ,but still I want more information if you have about it because I’m very worried about getting into residency program as a foreign registered doctor. Thanks in advance.

As I mentioned in the video, the chances depend on the specialty and type of Diploma recognition. There is always a chance, you just have to apply wide and hope you will get an invitation for an Interview. The hospital that accepts to hire you would send an appeal to the canton for approvement.

Hello Maria, the original copy of your diploma need to be officially translated to german/Italian/french or English with a Notary stamp that is recognised in the EU which proves that it is the original copy. If you have more specific questions about what is approved and what is not, you can directly contact MEBEKO to find out what they accept if the info is not written on the website already. There is also another part I forgot to mention in my video that late in the process, there would be a need to have a corresponding address here in Switzerland that they would be sending the letters to (the payment receipts and once approved the official recognition papers) www.bag.admin.ch/bag/de/home/berufe-im-gesundheitswesen/auslaendische-abschluesse-gesundheitsberufe/diplome-der-medizinalberufe-ausserhalb-eu-efta/registrierung-nicht-anerkennbare-diplome-medizinalberufe.html

There is no official rules about getting an exception due to the USMLE on the website of the MEBEKO. If you are an EU citizen with an non-EU Diploma, you diploma could be indirectly recognised if you (among other things) have a 3 year clinical experience in an EU country or Switzerland. After you get your MedReg number without having your Diploma directly or indirectly recognised, it is up to the Canton to decide if you can work there as a doctor (Usually after the interview the HR of the hospital will send the request to the canton asking for your employment). I did not need to register to any association when I started working. The hospital issues for you a malpractice insurance.
