One of the greatest moments they've ever penned is when she sings the line "And now here we stand here face to face" and the drum and guitar pound out this dramatic swell that transitions into the next part of the song. I get chills every single time. And that chorus? Ridiculous.

The choice to leave the harsh vocals out until the Matriarch makes her reappearance is so effective and cool. I love the implication that they were there from the beginning in Apex because her influence was already corrupting the Immortal since she awoke him but this time his master is the more subdued grandson. And it makes her showing up in Return to Me kick so much more ass.

@@severn_jovescrazygaming2500 As much as I love the whole story of the Immortal, it would have been great if it wasn't the grandson of the Matriarch's fourth son but instead his surviving lineage through many generations that had been told the story of the unfair death of the fourth son to the hand of the Matriarch. A legend that the weapon that brought the fourth son to his demise could be found again to exact vengance on the Matriarch. After centuries of research one of his descendants finally found the way to awaken the Immortal and thus began the events of Abyss. Just my two cents :D

Thank you Brittney, you're brilliant and the song writing is truly incredible both lyrically and musically. I think the Wind that Shapes the Land is the perfect metal song, and Legacy is just gorgeous. I am broken hearted by the loss of the mountain Apex, and by the sacrifice at the end of The Wind that Shapes the Land. I love Apex, the song and the album, and I love this album just as much if not more. I have a friend who I got into your albums, but he fell in love with Apex and it turned into his gym music, the dude is jacked now. I also use it to work out to, along with songs for earlier albums, so I put together a 2 hour exercise routine called the Immortal Workout that goes along with the themes of the songs for both albums. It's pretty brutal to get through.

4 weeks listening to the album now, have not been able to not listen to it in chronological order. The story is so tied into the music that it feels to me like cheating to just listen to random track order. Love the immortal character. Also appreciate the courage of the grandson to really lead the opposition of the matriarch and to help the immortal find his own power to resist her. I really dig the whole story, and now really will expect every album yet to come to have an equal or better concept!

I literally just remembered! I had a dream a few nights ago of what I could only assume was meant to symbolise the “youth” of the Matriarch! She was very young, like a child’s age at the time, and was going around possessing the minds of tons of people who all were attacking me. I then draw a steel sword with weird symbols on it and took out several of them and everything around me started shaking and moving! The child Matriarch then began flying mid air and hurled lightning at me. I got hit by the second bolt which then woke me up. The dream was NUTS. (I can recall my dreams very well and have been teaching myself how to over the years! Mate Tea helps a lot lol)
