University of Washington's MAJOR Problem

This is my experience, and quite frankly, my rant about UW's major selection process. For the first year and a half, I existed as a pre-major in health sciences. Now that I've been admitted to my major (MCD Biology), here are my honest thoughts about the whole process

I am a UW graduate (2021) and thanks for making this video to let people know about the capacity constrained major problem that exists at the university. I didn't have a grasp of this system when I first showed up and I think it leads to a situation where a lot of students feel like they have to give up on their dreams of engineering, CS, business, etc. because they don't do well in an intro class or get rejected from their major the first time around. I had an interesting path at UW, as I went from wanting to do international studies to economics and then finally to...oceanography! I would say my best advice to my fellow Huskies is recognize that just because you are in a particular major, it doesn't exclude you from taking classes outside your major that will give you the experience/skills you want. As an oceanography major, I still took all the intro chem, calc, bio, and physics classes and even picked up some GIS and programming knowledge by finding the right upper division classes that were not restricted to students of a particular major. I think the "Be Boundless" motto should be replaced with "Be Flexible". Recognize that the plan you try and set into motion when you're 18 years old and wet behind the ears is probably not going to the same plan you have when you're 22, and that's totally fine! Perspective is key, and I wish the advisers and support systems at UW could do a better job of giving that to students. And to anyone reading this who might be a UW student or is thinking about attending, you can always reach out and I'd be happy to answer questions. I've been having some UW nostalgia lately so I've been watching all the videos about my school that I can.
