University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Campus Tour

WATCH IN HD! Campus video tour of the UCLA located in the Westwood district of Los Angeles. Love the four old original Romanesque Revival buildings which consisted of Royce, Haines, and Kinsey Hall and Powell Library. Relatively large campus, although it's the second smallest of the ten UC campuses in terms of acreage. Beautiful campus and one of the best public universities in the country.

    I am so proud that I was privileged enough to attend UCLA. Beyond being a phenomenal educational school it is a stunning campus. Although I worked for the last 30 some odd years I will always remember my best years well when I was at UCLA. Work is work but I actually learned much while I studied at UCLA.

    So many things I remember. Thank you. So many changes. You used to be able to drive through the campus to Sunset Blvd. Later, I could park on the ground floor of a parking structure and go to the student store for reduced parking fees. Moved and have not been on campus for years. I miss it. Go Bruins

    That brings back memories. At 3:22 they tagged “Bruin Walk.” That might be what it says on a map, but nobody who goes to UCLA would consider that area Bruin Walk. The actual Bruin Walk doesn’t begin until you get to Ackerman Union. It’s the hill that starts at Ackerman and ends at the Powell Library. UCLA, Economics Class of 2002.

    Why not FAFSA? FAFSA can cover all your tuition and give out some extra money if you are a low income family. Just work hard and do not even think about your tuition for now. It is not too late to figure out after being accepted. Moreover, UCLA is a public school. If you are a California resident, it does not cost you as much as USC or other private colleges. Community college can be an option, but why not straight up to your dream college from high school when FAFSA can cover you all your tuition. Going straight to a 4 year college will open up more internship opportunities and make you more prepared for connections & research...

    Creator should add explanations of what each building is -- a dorm, classroom bulding, etc. Why are the Janss steps a big deal, for example? That kind of thing would make the video a still-better into to the campus, along with basic facts about the size of the campus, what's in the surrounding nabe, how many campus buildings there are, what the main architectural styles are and so on.

  • @robjohnston366

    @robjohnston366

    3 жыл бұрын

    Sorry so late in answering. . . but the video’s creator didn't show any dorms. The campus is about 419 acres, and the surrounding neighborhood is the posh westside of Los Angeles, and the campus is about five miles from the beach. I don't know how many buildings there are but much of them are Romanesque type architecture which is how Royce Hall is described. Janss Steps was one of the first things built on campus, because there needed to be steps for the students to get from the lower part (the Lowlands) of campus to the upper part (the Highlands) where a lot of classes were. Some describe UCLA’s topography as being like a bowl, with the dorms being on "The Hill," and with the main walkway to classes called “Bruin Walk” as one proceeded through the Lowlands, the bottom of the bowl, which is where the athletic fields and complexes are. As is typical of the Lowlands, the travel can be fraught with danger by marauders and other renegades. Then continuing on in an easterly direction on Bruin Walk, one cuts across a little north of it and ascends by the Janss Steps to Royce Hall and Powell Library at 1:06 . As is typical of the Highlands, Royce is mainly a concert hall and has other refined elements, but has language and a few other classes, and Powell south and opposite to it, is one of the main libraries with something like a total of 12 on campus, all in the highbrow Highlands. Starting at the beginning of the video on the Lowlands, at 0:27 , we pass Kaufman Hall which houses Dance - actually, I think it’s called the Dance Building now because Mrs. Kaufman disassociated herself from UCLA; it's a long story. Opposite and south of Dance is a similar looking building and houses Student Activities, with things like recreation. Both buildings have pools and other recreational courts, pretty cultured activities for the Lowlands. The afore mentioned Janss Steps is at 0:50 leading to the Highlands. Royce per the afore 1:06 and its lobby at 1:10 and Powell at 1:18, and the back southern side of Powell at 1:25. Haines Hall is shown at 1:34 , which houses Sociology and Anthropology, just east of Royce, with the building’s east side at 1:41. The Humanities Building is at 1:51 , opposite to Haines on its south side. There was the original quadrangle of buildings on campus constructed in ~ 1919, with Royce, Powell, Haines and the Humanities Building with the Janss Steps leading to them. Back in the Lowlands, the Bruin Bear is shown at 1:55, between the dorms and classrooms. Fowler Museum is shown at 2:03 to about 2:25 , which houses art collections, etc., and is located on the north side of Janss steps, built on the slope between the Lowlands and the Highlands. There must be something figurative of meaning with this edifice situated between the two, perhaps as a meeting place for the Lowlanders to become more cultured? The School of Law is at 2:28 and is on the extreme east side of the campus countryside. Bruin Plaza is shown at 2:36 and is in the Lowlands of Bruin Walk and has the Bruin Bear mascot along with the Ackerman Student Union (one of the student book stores, eateries, etc.), the Wooden Recreation Center, the Ashe Center for Student Health and the Athletic Hall of Fame. Obviously all Lowlands kind of things. 2:46 to 2:52 cuts to a street in Westwood Village way outside of the campus countryside. Then at 2:55 we see Kirchoff Hall continuing on Bruin Walk to and from upper campus, south of Janss Steps. Janss takes one to upper campus via steps, and the southerly Bruin Walk takes one up via an incline (or decline) with intermittent steps. This is probably the most aesthetic part of campus with its many trees, and is a good buffer between the Low and Highlands. Kirchoff and Moore Hall just east of it are built on the incline. We are most likely to see Robin Hood and his men there because of its sylvan setting. The Tennis Center is at 3:08 and is a sunken facility, the top of the stadium of which abuts the south part of Bruin Walk leading from the dorms to the classrooms. On the north side of the Bruin Walk is Drake Stadium track and is shown at 3:15 . And again, these tend to be Lowlands type activities. Back on Bruin Walk at about 3:20, and to the right is Pauley Pavilion just east of the tennis stadium where the basketball, volleyball, and gymnastics teams perform, again, quintessential Lowlands activities. At 3:26 is the Acosta Training Facility where the football and other teams lift weights. At 3:34, the intramural fields for various sports, on the east side of Drake Stadium. Pauley Pavilion again at 3:38. Need I say more about these questionable activities? At 3:42, the complex of Engineering buildings, housing the Henry Samueli Engineering and Applied Sciences including Computer Science. There are a couple of new buildings there completed in the last five years. UCLA Medical Plaza at 4:05 with a glimpse of Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center on the right, also at 4:25 . Various research centers at 4:30, Louis Gonda Neuroscience, and the David Geffen School of Medicine classrooms at 4:38. The old medical center which houses Public Health at 4:51. At 4:50, the new Meyer and Renee Luskin Center for “cross-discplinary research that will help Los Angeles and the rest of the country reach the Holy Grail of environmental sustainability.” A noble Highlands quest. At 4:58 on an internal campus road called Charles Young Drive. At 5:05, a statue of John Wooden on the north side of Pauley Pavilion by Bruin Walk opposite to the intramural field. At 5:11, the Wooden Center building on the east side of the intramural field. Ackerman Student Union at 5:16 in Bruin Plaza, see 2:36 . At 5:35 , Dickson Court North, east of Haines Hall, and abuts Perloff Hall, the architectural building, and has classes that teach a variety of subjects. At 5:47 , Campbell Hall just north of Haines Hall, which houses Academic Advancement programs. At 5:53, Rolfe Hall just north of Royce hall which houses English and American Literature. At 6:00, Dickson Court South, east of the Humanities Building and on the south side of the court has Schoenberg Hall which houses Music. At 6:05 the Evelyn and Mo Ostin Music Center on the south side of Schoenberg, and has recording studios and teaching and rehearsal rooms. At 6:11 Dodd Hall on the east side of campus just west of the Law School, which has classrooms and houses Art History, Philosophy and Classics. Definitely Highlands perusals. At 6:17 , the afore mentioned Moore Hall just east of Kirchoff on the incline besides Bruin Walk to and from upper and lower campus (see 2:55 ). At 6:29, the Luskin School of Public Affairs and houses Public Affairs, Public Policy, Social Welfare, and Urban Planning. At 6:35 , Melnitz Hall in the extreme north side of campus, which has screenings of film, and houses UCLA’s film department. At 6:39 , the Broad Art Center in the north part of campus just west of Melnitz and houses Art and Design. The Franklin Murphy Sculpture Garden, north campus, at 6:55 and has various sculptures, a nice place to lounge among various trees and foliage. At 7:10 , Franz Hall, east campus, which houses Psychology and next to it, the Inverted Fountain. From 7:15 a bunch of south campus STEM-related buildings: Court of Science Student Center with eateries, 7:15 , Geology Building 7:22 , Department of Chemistry, Department of Life Sciences, Department of Chemistry, Molecular Sciences Building, Boyer Hall Molecular Institute, California Nanosystems Institute, Biomedical Research Building, Molecular Sciences Building, Boelter Hall (engineering),etc., for most of the rest of the video, Math Sciences at 7:45 , Strathmore Building at 7:51 which houses the Career Center. There you have it, the edifices and complexes of the fairest campus countryside in all the world, even with the class distinctions between the Lowlands and Highlands. We may have our differences, but together we are one: Bruins till the end!

    My GPA unweighted is around a 3.9, and I did take all Honors/ AP courses! :) I got a 1410/1600 on the SAT and a 30 on the ACT. I'm honestly nothing marks wise, very average if not below average for the people applying to UCLA. (I'd study to be safe because I didn't study for these tests or my classes and just barely got into UCLA)! I think what helped my application is that I was a fairly well rounded student! I was a part of the student government for my Junior and Senior year of high school, I was a Varsity Swimmer and on Varsity Tennis, as well as tennis captain. I was a part of Key Club, German Club, NHS, Leadership Plus (as well as the President of L+), and a participating member of our competing Mock Trial team for two years! Also, I worked fairly hard on my personal statement and supplemental essays for UCLA! Grades mean something but they clearly aren't an overwhelming factor on whether you get in or not!
