Universal Sail - stability and power
Ғылым және технология
On a day of fickle breezes, we had an opportunity to demonstrate the self-righting ability of the Universal Hull. Without an ounce of ballast, it springs up easily from over 90 degrees. In larger sizes, with engine, water tanks and fuel tanks in the deep V of the hull, the Universal Hull will recover from angles comparable with ballasted sailboats. Even though the breeze was light, you can also see a little of the explosive acceleration when the boat heels and the chine touches the water.

Interesting article in Seahorse - Thanks
so when I capsize, and fall of ,the boat will just spring up and sail away ,what a good concept.

That s a good reason to hold the sheet, in stead of putting it at the "brake"

Or... It could just sink beneath you, but you make a good point and I have seen it numerous times in other design types of light boats including Cats which happened to me sailing off Caye Caulker, Belize.
THE WIND IS RIGHTING THE TUB WHEN THEY ARE STANDING ON THE DOCK. IT BLOWS THE LITTLE TUB UPRIGHT LOOK CLOSELY AT THE WIND DIRECTION.....
Very good
wouldn't it have been better to capsize the boat while sailing in order to show how easily it rights itsself in a real situation !?
A light weight carbon fiber boom could be added to the rear of the mast for an additional collapsible sail, for light wind days.
It looks like you have reinvented the Genoa jib!

Essentially, yes. But then, the Genoa is essentially a lateen sail hung from a stay instead of a yard - and is not that different from a traditional dipping lug. It's all about new ways of trying old ideas. The unusual thing here is the mast mounted aft, so that the staysail becomes the main. There are pros and cons. As a simple to operate rig, it works. I doubt it will catch on. There are some people experimenting with more complex mast aft rigs and they argue strongly for their efficiency. I'm not convinced.
Amazing, please show us more! The boat must be very light and easily trailerble, will there be any drawings to allow these boatsb to be built by other people? I see great potential, certainly within this size, exploring, recreational, matchracing etc. Also, the boat looks very different from what is available today very futuristic. I like the looks!
Interesting boat. How about adding some more sail area? Will you post more info if the boat becomes commercially available or as plans for building by amateurs?
nice idea ! what about the tack ?
Is there a kit to make one ? The hull looks complicated.
A little voice over for clarification wouldn't be a bad thing
Interesting.
Whatever happened to this project? "Where are they now?"
This isn't really a new concept, unfortunately what you get in ultimate stability you give up in intermediate stability, so you haven't got the same amount of power under sail.
What is the weight / draft ?
So just try it with a couple of crew fallen in the lee bilges the sail wet and mast full of water and see how quickly it springs up.

interesting but for now will stick with my Wayfarer

Wayfarers are great! I had one #616 built in jolly old England in 1962. Sailed her extensively in all weather and never once went over. Sold her to another sailor who knew the history of the Wayfarer and, had that gleam in her eye, that I just knew she would be lovingly cared for. Depression is the only reason to sell her. Lived with it for years. Miss the Wayfarer immensely!
why only a Jib ?
Where's the mainsail
The most unique feature in this video is the extremely unbalanced sail plan. My guess would be that it was a deceivingly windy day in water that has too short fetch for waves to become a problem. For that small a jib to sail flat with two men on the rail the wind must have been 16 to 25 kn.

You're mad if you watched that video and think the wind was at 25 kn
The deepest point of the boat should be between the main and forestay.
so you've reinvented trimaran with a very low clearance so that your boat crawls on half its belly instead of gliding on two streamlined hulls? Why test with just the jib?I would imagine a barely manageable amount of lee helm windward? The rudder wake looks massive. All in all i can't think of any advantage over a folding ama trimaran of comparable size?
IT is a simple Fock-sail...
Too bad about the music and unreadable momentary text. I think the subject is fascinating.
Hi My wife and i want to have circumnavigation with 6 meter sail boat does this boat design has 6 meter model and suitable for circumnavigation?

Sailing is not much fun when you can't see where you're going. Always craning your neck to see past the front sail.
Put the main up too
It needs a main sail.
Less beachable; handier for ramming as in traditional naval warfare; lots wetter on encountering waves.
Грот-стаксель какой-то))

Просто стаксельный швертбот со смещенной а корму мачтой.. Можно даже и грот дополнительно поставить на кормом выстреле (кормовом бушприте) но тогда места для экипажа вообще не будет...

nice video...too bad about the choice of music...had to turn off the sound.

Stick a proper rig on it and have a real go
