    Perfect for me. The type of recording I do usually only require 1 to 3 mics on drums. I make very subtle EQ changes and print those tracks. I never run out of DSP. I'd you're nervous about committing to a sound, you can simply print multiple versions of a mix and save them and go back to them using them as checkpoints. I find printing and commuting to a sound helps me work faster too. Eliminates over mixing which is extremely easy to do. 😊

    Great video! I am very grateful for the Thunderbolt 3 warning on pre-2016 Macs. I've been a very satisfied UAD user for many users. The low latency and sound characteristics are simply the best. As a Mac user, I am disappointed that when Apple releases a new operating system, UAD compatibility lags by anywhere from 6 to 16 weeks....so we patiently wait while the rest of the Mac community benefits from the upgrade.

    "US doesn't supply you with a thunderbot 3 cable in the box" - yesterday i drove to a session an hour and a half from my house, only to discover i'd left my interface (Audient iD22) at home. 😩 The singer only had so much time to track so I sped to guitar center, where the cheapest thing they had on the shelf (thanks covid) was this Solo. Thankfully the sales guy warned me I'd need to buy a cable. Not thankfully, guitar center doesn't sell them lol. Sped to walmart - nope. Sped to Best Buy and snatched the ONE they had. Drove back to the home session, downloaded, registered and restarted. Had no idea how, and no time, to mess with anything, so thankfully the settings sounded great right out of the box! We captured more than enough vocal takes, just in time for my singer to rush to his oral surgeon appt 😳. How many grey hairs did UA give me by not provided a cable? I mean, at least 4 haaa. Here's the real kicker. They made this interface sound so dang good and gave me so many useful plugins, that I'm out $500 cause i'm not returning it. If anyone needs more outputs or channels tho, and wants to buy a used Audient, lemme know :)

    Phil McNally I’m able to manage with the Arrow even when recording on both input. I don’t print with much effects, as I prefer to do that during mixing. So the Unison are loaded with preamp/eq and I may use a compressor. I don’t use the AUX because of latency.

  • @EdThorne

    @EdThorne

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks. If you already have a Twin with two DSP cores you'll want to stay with the Twin. The Solo's single DSP core is limiting. The only thing more DSP proof is a Twin Quad (4 cores) or buying a Satellite: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eqKXzaeJncKsm6g.html

  • @GRequinBlanc

    I have the arrow. The solo TB3 is the same, except for the colour. One Sharc. When printing it’s not a big issue. When mixing, multiple tracks you will quickly run out of sharc memory. I bought a UAD satellite quad to help...but the satellite cannot expand the solo/arrow’s own single sharc. If you need more dsp, get an Apollo twin or more. console was also updated in Aug 2020 making it a better MAC GUI, with room for improvement still.

  • @EdThorne

    Kenny Hi Kenny, lots of good questions here, thank you. The Solo and Apollo sound very close, the difference is negligible in my opinion but this may vary on different sources, I have to admit I only recorded vocals through the Solo. Luna is great and has some great features, including the Oxide Tape and Neve summing but functionality wise it is still a long way of being fully functional as a DAW comparable to ProTools. The key commands are the same and they are updating it regularly so it will get there soon. Luna Review: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z5iVyrCNqJaceco.html Regarding the Clarett, sound wise they are slightly different as you can hear in this video below (Scarlett, Clarett & Apollo audio examples) The main benefit of moving to a Solo would be the Unison preamps and missing and recording through UAD plugins (although you will run out of DSP quickly with a Solo, the more DSP you can afford the better). The headphone preamps are better on the Apollo units, and they both have a higher input gain which gives you more headroom before clipping at the conversion stage. kzread.info/dash/bejne/e5-p19p_prGoj8o.html I hope this helps 🙂

I was thinking, if i buy the usb version and then buy a thunderbolt cable. so whenever I want to use Mac, I can just plug in the thunderbolt to thunderbolt cable without external power and whenever I want to use PC, I can just change the thunderbolt to thunderbolt with the ucb-c to usb-a cable with external power). Do you think this'll work?

  • @EdThorne

    The USB version is ONLY PC compatible. It is supplied with a power cable because the USB connection can’t power the device. The thunderbolt version is Mac/Windows 10 compatible, as long as the PC has TB3 connections to power the device. Note TB2 does not supply enough power, so only Macs from 2016 onwards with TB3 will power the device. In terms of interchangeability, this could work as long as both devices have TB3 connections.

    Hi Ed! Cool video man on the cheaper Apollo series. (Also nice guitar tone in your intro sound clip) 2 Questions please: 1) As far as I can tell, there are 3 main differences between the Apollo Solo & Apollo Mk2 Solo being: 1.1) Mk2 Solo uses Thunderbolt 2 whereas the Solo uses Thunderbolt 3, which means the solo is faster. 1.2) Mk2 can facilitate 2 stereo speaker systems, where as solo supports only 1 set. 1.3) Mk2 has optical-in facilities; solo does not. Did I miss anything? do these 2 interfaces both come with the same 14 plug-ins? :o 2) Would you say that one core is enough for my needs if I plan to use all my wet effect in my DAW but use the UAD core simply to amp up my guitar and maybe add a compressor and distortion?.....would these 3 UAD plug-ins consume the solo core? Or can I add up to 7 UAD plugs maximum?

    Hi Ron. Thanks for watching. Great questions. 1-3) You are correct. Regarding the plugins, if I remember correctly when I got my Twin, the plugins were the full versions not the legacy versions, as supplied with the Solo. I had 4 plugins running in this session at about 70% DSP (most of that was the Neve 1073) so I think you’ll be fine. To be safe, the Twin is a good option. You can also expand the the Twin with a Satellite. I forgot to mention in the video you can’t expand the Solo 🤦🏼‍♂️

    @@EdThorne Thanks for that Ed :) So I should be able to run about 5-8 UAD plug-ins at one given time, which is honestly more than enough considering that I'll 95% end up recording direct anyway for flexibility. Recording with effects will be problematic if I want to change my sound after so I don't see myself using it much. Even tho I love the Apollo audio interfaces (Even if I don't own one yet!), I must say UAD have a knack for trying to rip us humble customers off! Most notably with thier 1) Satellite DSP extension 2) Expensive plug-ins ( They look good & sound great but I also dislike the fact that they are pushy with thier sell-tactics which is a slight turn-off for me) 3) Thier TB expansion cards cost a bomb! Are you doing any giveaways of the Apollo? I would not mind trying that Apollo Solo! ^^ Although, I will probably want the Twin x at least ultimately. The Apollo x4 is wicked! But cost about £1500 :( Arguably worth it but pricey!

    Ron Vai Yes, I would have thought 5-8 Legacy plugins is about right, which is plenty for monitoring and Unison. I don’t print many FX either, once it’s committed it can’t be adjusted so, I agree most processing is best in post. The UAD universe is expensive but it is also very good. The Solo doesn’t really offer much beyond what it is though. The Twin/4/6/8/8p/16 etc offer loads of expand ability which is useful. Ha - sorry, this unit will be going back to the shop for a refund 🤣

    It doesn’t. UA use 4/5 different converters across the Volt/Solo/Twin/and rack units up to the best on the X16. They’re all good but the Apollo Twins/X4 and X racks have the edge for sure!

    Does the DSP get used up very quickly if using the plugins to mix in your DAW or is that more of a concern while recording?

  • @EdThorne

    If using the DSP versions of the plugins, yes, depending on which version you use. The ‘Legacy’ versions or less DSP intensive. The Native versions do not use DSP and run off your computer’s processing power but of course can not be used for tracking (that processing happens ON the Apollo using its DSP)

    In my experience, having owned an Apollo X solo, "budget" is not a good idea in the UAD world. For instance, when I wanted to use the beautiful Fender 55 amp plugin, it literally ate up ALL of the DSP power that unit had to offer. No compression, no EQ, no nothing. It came so close to the limit that sometimes the amp plugin wouldn't work at all, until I restarted the Apollo a couple of times. Grrr! The plugins are the reason to invest in this system over, say, a Scarlett. So getting an interface that can't really use enough of those options in a realistic setting seems like a waste of money.

  • @EdThorne

    Johannes Labusch Yeh one code is very limiting. I think they should have given the solo one input to make it cheaper than the Twin but two cores to keep it functional.

    @@accentontheoff The built in preamps of the Apollos are clean and powerful. You won't notice any coloration. In my opinion, this system is now a bit obsolete, especially since you can buy all the UA plugins in the Spark system, which doesn't require an Apollo to run them. My comment is two years old, and I have since upgraded to a x4, which I will continue to use, but usually I either use external preamps, or I'll put a Neve 1073 plugin in the Unison slot. That one is very good and has a great EQ.

    @@JohannesLabusch Thanks for the reply, much appreciated. Thing is, the only Apollo device that fits my current budget is the Solo, but I worry that I am entering a nightmare world of un-runnable plugins and hence unusable preamps, and will need to upgrade the device before I even start using it. Hence the question. Another way of looking at it - how much better, percentage wise, would you say the preamps in the UAD Apollo Solo are when compared the Focusrite Scarlett.

  • @JohannesLabusch

    @JohannesLabusch

    @@accentontheoff Now that you can have all those plugins without a UA device, I'd say go for the Scarlett. It will take a long time until you'll be dissatisfied with those preamps, if it ever happens. And if it does, you can then think about investing in a great outboard preamp.
