If my grandfather saw this, he probably would have retired from the military 😂😂. I didn't get to hear much about Vietnam from him, but the few stories he did tell mostly revolved around struggling to fix helicopters because he barely understood it enough to work on them. But was assigned anyway since the army already trained him in it and he technically passed

@@nspread8953 The V-22 has been flying for 31 years, has been in full service for 17 years, and has a grand total of 13 crashes in that time that were bad enough to have to write the aircraft off as a loss, with a total of 30 fatalities. The class A mishap rate for the aircraft is 1.12 per 100,000 flight hours, which is an improvement over the helicopter it replaced (CH-46 Sea Knight) which had a 1.14 per 100,000 flight hour class A mishap rate. BTW, "trusted" helicopters like the UH-60 blackhawk (reliable enough to fly the president and other government VIPs) have a class A mishape rate of 1.20 per 100,000 flight hours. BTW, of 30 fatalities in V-22 crashes, 25 of them came in 3 crashes in which pilot error was the cause of the loss, not any material or design issue with the aircraft.

*Important shltuff nobody but pilots ever ask:* *CAN IT AUTO ROTATE OR GLIDE WELL?* Answer: almost certainly not. That's why the v22 Osprey is neat bot not popular. If they added longer wings so it could glide better, it would be a good helicopter replacement.. but they never seem to do that and I don't understand why. You could even have those long wings fold while airborne as you're landing/taking off in helicopter mode, and only unfurl when they're in the air. It would also provide longer cruise ranges. You could even make them 3 part wings where you can use it in 3 diff modes.

If you think about what a helicopter is used for, it makes more sense. Traditionally, helicopters aren't designed to be flown at speeds where their landing gear becomes a drag nightmare. Retractable landing gear takes more engineering time, more maintenance requirements, and worst of all yet another step in the damn checklist. Saves a lot of money to keep them rolling dogs out.

@TRIJICON-ACOG There ain't a military platform that didn't go through growing pains or result in fatalities. The Osprey rose out of requirements....from the failure of US rescue of the hostages in Iran in 1980. It is a complicated platform, to say the least, and requires a lot of automation (which translates to software and firmware). The safety record and crash statistics are exacerbated by the lengthy test phases which lasted almost ten years....and several hull losses and casualties. Every military air platform has been grounded at one time or another. The US Army selected the tilt rotor style to replace the Blackhawk helicopter....which has had its share of incidents over the decades. Let's also remember that militaey airborne platforms are designed to do things civilian a/c and helos can't do in order to accomplish war-time missions.....so they are more dangerous. Also, the media loves to feast on incidents where expensive military platforms are involved. Always have and always will. What isn't reported is the follow up actions to correct those issues and make the platform safer.....

You could even have those long wings fold while airborne as you're landing/taking off in helicopter mode, and only unfurl when they're in the air. It would also provide longer cruise ranges. If you think about what a helicopter is used for, it makes more sense. Traditionally, helicopters aren't designed to be flown at speeds where their landing gear becomes a drag nightmare. It was not built to compete with the mission set of the Chinook anyway. You are WAY more likely to die in a Blackhawk crash than you ever would in a Osprey crash.
