United Airlines CRJ550

In order to provide upgraded service on short routes, United Airlines worked with Bombardier to develop a new airplane, the CRJ550. Today, GoJet Airlines inaugurated service on the planes. I was on the first CRJ550 flight to my home airport, Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO).
The CRJ550 is really just a CRJ700 with fewer seats, but United Airlines used the opportunity to completely redesign the 50 passenger regional jet. The CRJ550 offers passengers the choice of First Class, Premium Economy, and Economy. Passengers in all classes of service on the CRJ550 have the opportunity to keep their roll-aboard bag with them in the cabin, forgoing the need to gate check a bag, which has always been required on these planes in the past.
In this video, we’ll compare the most common 50 seat regional jet, the CRJ200 to this innovative new CRJ550. I’ll give you my opinions, but more importantly, I hope you’ll share your thoughts about the CRJ550 in the comments section. I can’t wait to see what you think of this new airplane.
Here's iTripReport's video about the "true" inaugural flight to Harrisburg:

Hi Jeb! Flight attendant here (who doesn’t have to work this plane). While the plane is nice looking, A LOT of flight attendants are upset with this configuration. As you said yourself, it’s a lot of work for one person to do. I don’t know the validity to this but I had someone tell me it’s the only plane in the world with one flight attendant and two cabins. Additionally, I’ve had a few say it’s tacky for first class passengers to self serve; that it takes out the ‘class’ in “first class.” In this configuration it’s much needed though so first class passengers don’t have to wait forever for the flight attendant to serve them additionally drinks/snacks. I agree with others saying that one flight attendant working this isn’t right. This new plane is beautiful and I love the carryon capacity. I just feel bad for the one flight attendant. :( Aside from this, there’s lots of changes coming to United and I hope to see your reviews on them!

Is it just me, or could airlines/passengers do without service on 30-minute flights? Like I said in a previous post, "Everyone has spent an hour or two without drinking before, and everyone survived. Countless people commute twice a day for way more than 30 minutes without getting a snack or some water while they drive or sit on the bus/train, and we’re all doing fine :)" I know that people expect a lot from arlines nowadays, but expecting a cookie because you have to sit for 30 minutes? Seems a little unnecessary.

Great review Jeb. I live in a small midwestern town that United services with a few CRJ200 and a once a day mainline A319. We avoid the CRJ like the plague but sometimes have to take it due to work schedule and family engagements...etc. It would be a welcome addition to have the CRJ550 replace some of those flights if not all eventually.

I work on the CRJ 900 as Cabin Crew and this looks super cool! Indeed, 1 flight attendent for 50 passengers is a lot to do on a short flight. Sometimes we struggle with 90 passengers on a 30 minute flight and we're even 2 in the cabin. And sometimes we also have to eat on those super short flights. Anyway, excellent video! United would have loved to add more E175s and CRJ900s to the regional fleet. They're basically wasting gas and space putting 50 seats in a 70 seat regional jet. Their contract with the mainline pilots prevents this as their "scope" limits the amount of jets with greater than 50 seats that are contracted out to the regionals. And voila! A new 50 seat jet that can be flown by a regional airline with lower pay and worse working conditions.

The reason the CRJ550 exists is not because United is a cool company and wants to waste seat space on luggage racks. The reason is because of scope with the mainline pilots. Their scope sets how many jets with more than 50 seats can be in the regional fleet (i.e. contracted out). Think E175, CRJ900, etc. So, running out of space but needing to replace the aging CRJ200s eventually, this is their solution. Also Jeb I'd love to see you take a flight on a Dash-8 100 or 300 on Air Canada Express (Jazz)! Maybe you won't be so snooty about the RJ200 😉

I have not flown a CRJ-200 before. I agree that it isn’t the most pleasant thing to ride on out there. But as long as it gets me to final destination safely, then that Is all I care for. Good video, and try to fit in more CRJ-550 videos if you can.

Yesterday was a terrible day for the CRJ550s in terms of maint, our inaugural flight got delayed over an hour, my return flight (different aircraft) ended up departing an hour late, while at the same time which my inbound aircraft (which was supposed to leave 2 hours before my return flight) was supposed to. Hopefully once they fix these issues its smooth sailing from there

It's still a sardine can, game changer no way in hell. The 550 is simply a trick to beat labor agreements. The CRJ550 has a lower MTOW than the CRJ700 in order to comply with scope clauses in US pilot contracts, and is expected to receive type certification in the second half of 2019.[60] The initial 50 aircraft will be sourced from existing CRJ700 airframes, rather than being newly constructed.[61] On 7 August 2019, United took delivery of the aircraft and began with a crew familiarization flight to Chicago-O’Hare International Airport (ORD).

Just as things were starting to get a lot better and good on the CRJ700/900/1000’s with the new atmosphere cabin, they (Bombardier) announced that despite a sizeable order backlog, they would essentially be closing down the assembly line so Mitsubishi can build its MRJ’s in the factory used to build the CRJs, selling the program to Mitsubishi completely.

It'll be interesting to see if other regional operators adopt this new configuration or something similar. Given that CRJ-200s are (thankfully) being phased out (though slowly), there will need to be a replacement at the 50-seater level other than an ERJ-145 (which isn't the worst alternative, but would be nice to have more options). Also curious to see the reviews of the economy section. First class and Econ Plus got an upgrade compared to the -700, but economy looks the same at 30 inches and closer to the engines.

The newly reformed de Havilland Aircraft of Canada that recently reclaimed the Dash-8 design from Bombardier with the purchase of the Q400 program wants to create a new Dash-8 model based on the Q400, except it's shorter and seats 50 seats. This new Dash-8 proposal is going to be marketed directly at the 50-seat regional market for those looking for a replacement to the CRJ200 and ERJ-145 jets.

@@johnnyboythepilot4098 True, but I wonder if the US airlines and their regional partners would readopt turboprop planes? None of the Big 3 use them anymore, and Alaska is the only major airline to still use them.

@@JuanWayTrips If the proposed shortened Q400 is more economical & can generate more profit for regional airlines, than yes, I think some may give it a chance. The De Havilland guys also want to further improve the overall Q400 design, and make it even better than it already is, and the Q400 has evolved quite a ways since the original Dash-8-100. Many of the people at De Havilland also go way back to the original program from the 80's with the original de Havilland company, and they don't plan on making any other aircraft design, so the Dash-8 will have their complete undivided attention. If all goes well, think we may be seeing a revival with the Dash-8 family.
