An inspiration, I think this is a good idea for substitute the chinese penhold grip, it's a lateral penhold grip! I will use this grip in some trainning soon.

  • @classicleon

This unique grip is indeed a Penholder grip. It was used by former world champion Zhang Xielin (张燮林) back in 1960s. Zhang used this grip for chopping, and return to ordinary penholder grip by bending this index finger when starting offending. Instead, Yuna Oshio (小塩悠菜) used this grip as offensive style, and she changed a little bit direction to fit her fingers. Some call this "claw" or whatever they wanna call it, it's just a Penholder grip.

Guys, thanks for the replies. IMO, it still can be called Penhold. There are two reasons. First, the traditional Chinese "pen" (Ink Brash) should be held like this. So Yuna Oshio still grips it like a "pen". Second, "Penhold" is actually an interpreted word for English localization. The official Chinese name for penhold is actually "直拍" or “直板” which literally means "vertical grip". Because the bat is almost vertical when the player is in ready state; and Western pen is not a Chinese stuff. So the translation is localized very well.

I can only see the advantage of driving or hitting the ball with a forehand pen-hold grip when mixing the pen-hold grip with a shake-hand grip. The pen-hold grip offers the wrist flexibility as opposed to the shake-hand grip. The shake-hand grip will, however, excel the pen-hold grip in all others, namely, forehand and backhand pushing or chopping, backhand blocking, driving, hitting and/or smashing. Time will tell. I feel pessimistic though.

Just because she has a unique grip doesn't mean it is consistent, or necessarily a good thing. I think she is just a kid and is testing out different grips, she might be thinking she is just doing whatever feels good at that moment. Over time either her own growth, or her coaches, will train her out of this habit.

easy to win in junior game..hard to win in adult level game...this is why japan has so many talented junior players who can win lots champions at junior level but not so many adult players who can win champions...unique style can mess up novice players but not adult players with more power and experience and better mental states...you may notice many talented "unique" japanese players retire pretty early....except Jun Mizutani because he plays with great consistency in not so "unique" style...i actually feel Yuna's coach is pretty selfish..Yuna's wins may get the coach lots reputation and profit..then Yuna may barely win any games and have to retire early when she is adult, and would be very difficult for her to switch playing style...

@@tellmestraight Have you ever read the ITTF Handbook on service? Before you embarrassed yourself further, please have a "proper" read before you comment. As well as what I have said and your responses to reflect your own comprehension level in both the sport and basic English. Otherwise, you will look even more stupid than before. Thank You!
