I worked out of Denver for a few years after working on the railroad in Australia. US railroading is the pits. You are like an indentured servant, you are on call 24/7 and there are penalties if you call in sick (did I mention there is no sick leave?) They run their boards with the minimum number of personnel so forget about having any time off. You’ll get one weeks leave after your first year and then two weeks a year until 8 years service. It is the worst job as being furloughed is always a possibility.

@@a1cxd166 We don't have hourly rates. When you start out, you're on weekly guarantee until you mark up (when you complete training). Weekly guarantee can vary between $1100-$1300 per week, it tends to change a bit after a few months but it's always within that range. After you mark up, you paid based on mileage, which typically does pay more than the weekly guarantee. On average, new conductors make between $70,000-$100,000 per year at UP. It's a lot compared to other class 1 railroads but working for UP is notorious for being one of the worst class 1 railroads to work for.

Greyhound has a sililar way of things. My understanding is because things happen work/life/whatever and the person scheduled cannot make the trip, there is a delay pushing things, something requires more work. Many reasons they cant correctly account for, so they need people to be able to fill in when the slot opens due to those reasons. TLDR - Money makes trains move and a sitting train makes nothing
