Union Pacific - Road Trip pt3 Vaughn, New Mexico

I'd heard about Vaughn and knew that the Santa Fe's tracks crossed there. I'd also read that there was a Harvey House in Vaughn many years ago. I was at Tucumcari and it was only another 100 miles, and it would give me the opportunity to return home via the old Santa Fe route through Clovis. It was warm and windy when I got to Vaughn and I found the crossing west and north of town. There was lots of BNSF action, and a little UP action so I was able to get shots with traffic on both lines.

It was an experience for sure. I did drive through what must have been downtown and it was all boarded up and crumbling. Wish I could have seen it when the Harvey House was open.

thanks Bill. It was a cool location. Lots of the UP crews hate the run to Vaughn not because of the scenery, but because theyhave to live at the motel once they get there. The town is drying up and has a couple of convenience stores and not much else. Population can't be more than 300 or so. It's also in the middle of nowhere.

Great video, catching BNSF-UP meets at the flyover. It was erroneously reported that the former Santa Fe depot and Harvey House had been torn down but it's nice to see it's still there. Vaughn has seen its better days, going from over 1000 people in 1960 down to what it is now with a deserted downtown and lots of boarded up businesses. It was a crew change point for ATSF, and now is one for UP. These trains met at the triple deck Santa Fe Jct. in Kansas City and will meet again in Colton, CA.

The Las Chaves Harvey house was dismantled in 1939 or so and originally built around 1910. The Santa Fe Depot is still there and that is what you saw on your visit there. At one time the Santa Fe Railway had train dispatchers at Vaughn. I used to also think the Harvey House & Depot were one bldg. that is the one there now however I recently researched it learned that it is no longer there in Vaughn. Also Vaughn was a crew change point many years ago but now they simply pass thru.

I was wondering something about that flyover. Was that changed from a cross junction to a flyover within the past 35 years, or has that flyover always been there since the early 1900s?
