Umm, no -- the diesel is there for two main reasons: first, to suplement the meager electricity the steam engine generates; and second, to provide dynamic braking assistance to spare the steam engine of the braking load. Last year the Big Boy was returning to Cheyenne when a freight train ahead of it had engine problems and was unable to make it over a hill so Big Boy was called to give the stuck train a shove and it did just that. The drive wheels on the Big Boy broke traction a couple times and slipped providing positive proof it was putting out huge amounts of tractive effort. And yes, 4014 was able to push the stalled train over the hill permitting the train to continue with reduced power.
