The last time I saw this engine and coal car was in Denver rotting in the harsh Colorado sunshine. It was a wreck, but somehow I sensed this engine had had a great life, and had survived to be only one of three left in existence. @@thegardenofeatin5965 Hello, I am a steam locomotive engineer (though for much smaller examples). The diesel is providing no assistance. It actually has its dynamic brakes on to hold the locomotive back because such large steam locomotives aren't designed to run light. It is designed to pull mile long freight trains up mountains, so when it is only ever running at a fraction of its full power it is almost impossible to keep it the fire burning properly. When you see the Big Boy drumming along flat ground at 50mph, that diesel behind it still often has full dynamic braking applied and the fire is still probably only about 10% of maximum. The reason it is mostly silent is because it is just using so little steam, by the time the steam admitted to the cylinders expands and exits there isn't much left over. You can make steam locomotives creep along just about silently with the throttle just barely cracked open. That is why the bell is a requirement, because in the yard the bell often the only way to even tell they are approaching.

Great to see such a majestic machine so lovingly restored. The restoration likely cost many times the value anyone would put on her but that's not th point is it? It's the heritage of a bygone era and should be preserved for future generations to see.
Brilliant video. Great effort. Thank you ❤
What a magnificent monster. So pleased to see it running. Thank you, to all the many people who make this possible.
My grandfather was an engineer for the B&O. I was young, but I remember riding in a steam locomotive. I helped the fireman throw coal too! I rode in a diesel a few times with him on a run from Cincinnati’s union terminal to Lima and back too. He was a great man, retired in ‘72, and I have all of his time books and all kinds of railroad stuff.

The UP steam crew have done a great job getting this ancient loco in to such beautiful condition. Well done it is better than new and good for many years. Steam locos are character machines which talk to you so the engineer can tell how to drive it and get the best result. Electric or Diesel locos do not have character hence are less interesting
Quel monument ferroviaire cette big boy👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I remember when the 4014 was in Dallas, at The Great State Fair of Texas, Age of Steam museum, and I got in it, on it, went underneath it, went in the tender and even the firebox!!! I have not seen it since it has been restored and I have never ridden on it while it was running!!!
This is the very best of American design and craftsmanship - from 80 years ago - on display for us to appreciate! And we do! Awesome!!

Hats off to American giant steam Engine and its maintenance and its running rout in a pleasant cool climate with excellent Greenery trees middle is really felt me very happy as if Iam in the locomotive. Wah! Thank you very much...
This is the Pinnacle of Mechanical Engineering. The internal combustion engine as well
Greeley was the place where I saw the Challenger during my 2010 railfan trip (from my home in UK) to Colorado. I had seen 4014 at Pomona in 2008. My five USA trips gave me some great memories.
Awesome. I got to see it up close when it came through Jacksonville Texas. Wish it would come back👍🇺🇸

A diesel train's horn is impressive , a steam whistle is Thrilling ! Sends chills down your spine . A steam whistle in a valley energizes the air everywhere in the valley .
What an amazing and massive locomotive, I am glad that the UP 4014 did have a chance to operate this year after the western US tour that was planned earlier for 2022 was cancelled.
I got the pleasure of seeing this train pull into Fort Worth last fall.
The finesse required to move 4014 at that slow a pace is amazing.

The Union Pacific wasn't worried about compensating for their small genitals when they built the Big Boys the way your average Harley owner is. Also, the fact that it isn't chuffing kinda says to me that the diesels are actaully providing the power.
