Unimog truck expedition North Russia Ural 1999 Extreme Adventure Offroad

In 1996 and 1999 a group of German Unimog drivers went for an expediton to Far Northern Russia, to find a way over the Ural mountains, in the Workuta - Salekhard area. Here you can see some impressions of their adventures in this very remote part of the country.

@oscarcabello Looks like that was the chunkage from the portal or something that exploded. You could see the truck jurk when he was stuck like there was teeth missing in one of the hubs impeading forward movement. I've had 2 portal failures and witnessed a few others and as soon as the gears grenade in a portal you need to pull it apart, take out the axle shaft so it can free wheel or the left over bits of teeth will crack the case which hold the wheel bearings and your tire on.

Somehow the second brake caliper got off the mount and busted up. Those chunks were pieces of it. Probably loosed up and wasn't noticed. Those version Mogs and some other versions have a pair of calipers per wheel on the front then single calipers per wheel rear.

The German engineers will get a lot of experience from this expedition. The design of the truck will be even better. To the German engineers from the Russian engineer. Use wide tires of low pressure, better to move on sand to pressure half in tires. Having watched this video I came to a conclusion that the truck has hydraulic transmission, it very much was pleasant to me.

@oscarcabello nothing wrong with the rim at 2:56 those are caliper parts, looked like the brakes had locked up in the water should never have been that hard to pull out otherwise, with both diffs locked and portals the super low gear ratio made sure none of the tires were gonna turn...just a guess though

I lived some hour in far village in Tomsk region. I remember how i carried water with shoulder pole from water-well, but later used high technology devises. Now, when there are a lot of western synthetic and genetically modified food captivated the shelves of Russians stores, to earn in the village is very difficult, moreover in so remote villages.

NucleanSpoon I understand the distances that a "regional power" has to overcome. The region that spans half of the planet's land mass. My fellow Americans have no idea of the immensity of Russia. I read that you cannot travel between Magadan and Yakusk(?) in the summer by land because the tiaga is a vast wilderness of mud, rivers and forest. Only in the winter is it possible to drive

richard wysham Really, it's large area, for example, just one Krasnoyarsk region like 3 territory of France. But if one italian man could to go from Magadan to Yakutsk, it isn't impossible. I read this road called Дорога смерти (Road of the death), because around for hundreds only tundra, abandoned houses and no one human soul, therefore there is no one to watch the road it's in terrible condition. I don't remember exactly, but seems, talked about 680 kiloeters. Your USA's people just can't to open a maps of population density and climate map, that understand, why there is not profitable to build and maintain the road, more easy and cheaper to construct off-road vehicle, therefore, the less traffic, the less money in region. It's just a vicious circle.

NucleanSpoon I have finally found someone who can talk in a intelligent and rational manner about an incredible country. I guess it was google maps that opened my eyes to the sheer size of Russia. You have given me a glimpse of the difficulty of regular people to exist in a environment where everything is a struggle. I'm a spoiled American, so it's hard to imagine living in such a world. Now,because of just a few insights from you I understand why that small village seemed so archaic.I would like to understand more. We Americans think Alaska is a exciting and exotic place. But tamed. When you mentioned food on shelves I realized how challenging it must be to supply basic goods to some of your citizens. I didn't think about the cost of food in a city like Magadan. I'm stunned. I want to know more. We're all the same, really. Thank you, nuke spoon!. It's a pleasure!

richard wysham Try to go to Detroit, for example, or to any reservation, you'll there almost the same. Really, i don't learn, why Detroit became so poor. But i learned that americans (i mean true amerians, but not emmigrants and their descendents) can't to engage in profitable living in reservations, on the other hand, they can't to keep their traditions, living outside reservation. As result, this places the same poor, but this is made artificially, instead of natural barriers in Russia for buildup wealth in some far regions. The same, you can to go to campings, there people live permanently, you'll see almost the same, rich people don't will live in a camping, but it's artificial made conditions too. It's about to know more. Now a bit of theory about welfare of a region. That money can to come to a region, need means of delivery, if consider ondition of civil aviation in Russia, then remain only roads (car and rail) and navigable rivers. If there aren't large rivers in a region, then remains only roads. If the region locate at difficult terrain, then need very serious reasons to build a road (for example, coil, gold, diamonds, oil, gas, etc.) but if there aren't this, then no one will spend money to unsalable project. If at soviet times, there were political, strategic reasons, then now government try to keep money (in their pocket) for political, strategic reasons. Moreover, last time, federal government got more authority to regional power, among other things, in the financing too, therefore if a region located among dense forests, growing on the hills, between which there are the small rivers and there isn't expensive resources, then peoples live there such, how there can to survive. For example, would you spend couple millions $$ for building road from Yakutsk to Magadan and about 1/10 thom this to maintenance of the road, if you can to carry loads to south , to Transib, and on your road will pass a dozen cars a week? But why someone other must to spend?
